Not sure why, but when I play with 'Borders and Coastlines' option enabled, it kills my frame rates. I really want to play with the option enabled, but can't.

Hmmm are you sure your Windows installation is well and healthy? Or are you running some special version like Windows 8.1N?

Or are you running on older hardware with not-exactly-compatible drivers?

Bought-in-shop rig, or home-made over-clocked thingie built from new flashy stuff mated with old junk and with interrupt conflicts, heat issues, and various other HW issues?

A little more info on your rig and its history would be very helpful. Also, is this a work or hobby PC with very specialized tools installed that may have messed with Windows in some way?

Would it be possible to make Virtual Machine of you rig and send it along, so that I can run it here for testing?

Thanks!

My rig is an older desktop with an Intel 2.8 GHz dual-core and 2 gigs of ram. The 1 gig video card is built into the motherboard. Unfortunately there have been no driver updates for the card in a long, long time. I guess that's why it slows down so much. But v1.11 of the game really added performance compared to before. I suppose the game is drawing or keeping track of the borders and coastlines of the entire globe at the same time, even if when zoomed in the rest is out of view?

I will have to upgrade my video card at some point I guess.

Hmmm okay... I'll try making some further adjustments, hold on...

What about other software installed? Got any big suites installed? What about virus killers? Have you had any recent virus attacks?

No large suites installed. And I frequently do virus scans. No virus attacks. I also frequently defrag the hard drive to get the best performance.

The game has always slowed down to a crawl for me from the beginning (v1.0) when using the 'Borders and Coastlines' option. Seems like the game is drawing or tracking all of the borders and coastlines at the same time, even if they are out of view.

Interestingly, I also had this same borders and coastlines slowdown problem on my XP desktop machine. It was a dual-core 3.2 Ghz Intel with 3 gigs of RAM running an GeForce 8800 GT video card with 512 megs of RAM.

I'd check to see if you've got the latest video card driver installed.

What OS are you running?

Thanks!

Mike

Hi Mike. I'm running Windows 8.1, and unfortunately my video card drivers have had no new updates released in quite a long time. I may have to get a new video card.

Also a while back, on my dual-core 3.2 Ghz XP machine with 3 gigs of RAM, I was running Command on a GeForce 8800 GT video card with 512 megs of RAM (drivers were fully updated), and still had the borders and coastlines slowdown. But that was before the v1.11 release.

I know this sounds crazy, but is there a way for you guys to make the game not calculate and process borders and coastlines globally if they are out of view while zoomed in? Meaning only visible yellow lines are calculated.

Can I suggest before you buy a new video card, get a couple gig of RAM. 2 and 3 Gb are barely enough to run Windows 8. I run mine on a surface i5 at 2.0 GHz with 4 Gig and a crappy Intel HD graphics set. Borders have never had an impact, even in large scenarios in 1.0. So something is going on with your set up specifically.

In fact, I am very surprised that the 2 Gb RAM PC doesn't have speed issues just running Win 8. My wife's laptop is incredibly slow with Win 8.1 and 4Gb of RAM.

I think it would good to post a dump on your specs. These seem like older machines and you might have issues with your HD and the program accessing it. That is one area where upgrading to an SD made a big performance difference in early builds.

I'll consider the RAM and SSD upgrade. Thank you.
