Hi All,

I'm looking for suggestions for games that can be played multiplayer PVP (as opposed to coop), with a campaign mode -- either turn-based games with reasonably lengthy scenarios, or RTS with a strategic layer.

My brother an I are currently playing one of the Wargame:ALB campaigns. We just finished one game, with a draw, and have swapped sides to play through again. Once we're done the second time through, we'll probably be looking for something new to move on to.

I was thinking our next game was likely to be Decisive Campaigns: Barbarossa, as I've been playing that solo and greatly enjoying it, but having just switched to the Russians I've found the game fairly disappointing from that side.

I'm also interested in playing some Flashpoint Campaigns multiplayer but, as much as I've enjoyed it, I can't recommend it to my brother at full price, and it also has no multiplayer campaign mode.

We both have MWiF, but I doubt my brother will ever find the time to actually play the Global campaign. I'm also very much not happy with the way convoy management system is implemented (last time I checked, anyway, which was probably about a year ago). At some point, we'll probably play the Barbarossa and Guadalcanal scenarios.

We played one of the early Gary Grigsby games a long while ago (covered the WWII European and North African theatres, as I recall), which was fun if a little simplistic.

We have also played plenty of Close Combat in the past, but I'm not interested in any of the modern CCIV reskinned releases.

We're happy to play games in any pretty much any period; net-play or PBEM; turn based or RTS with a strategic layer. The main requirement is tactical/strategic depth and a reasonable attempt at realism. Older games are perfectly acceptable; we're more interested in quality of gameplay than flashy modern graphics (although the pretty is always welcome).

So, give me your wisdom. What should we be looking at as options for our next game?

Edit: having spent some time browsing through the Matrix/Slitherine catalogue, I'm leaning towards GG WitE as the next game to check out.

Strategic Command 3 might be worth checking out. Its not out yet but could be what you are looking for. Until then you have the Commander series of games.

WitE is very complex so unless you are experienced at that type of game it might be a bit overwhelming. I know I struggle to find the time! :)

I realize this might not be war gamish enough, but really, Civilization is a well developed design.

And this is totally not war gamish, but worth mention any way, Heroes of Might and Magic III handles multiple opponents well.

There are a lot of great classic board game war games that use software for remote players. Worth looking into.

On reflection, while we would definitely enjoy a game like WitE, there is the question as to whether my brother will be able to commit sufficient time (one of the reasons we're not playing World in Flames at the moment). It's something I'll keep in mind for one day down the track, if WiF isn't cleaned up sufficiently to play the grand campaign smoothly.

I've been taking a look at Commander: The Great War, which is looking like it might be an excellent option. I'll also keep an eye on SC3.

Played quite a bit of HoMM back in the day, it's probably not quite what we're looking for at the moment. Someone elsewhere has also suggested the Total War series, which I think might be a bit gamier than we're looking for, but something I'll be keeping in mind. As for Civ, it's a game I probably should enjoy, but I've never really been able to get into.

Hmm ... I see in the AGEOD thread people are saying very positive things about WWI Gold. Any comparisons between this and The Great War?

Edit: Well, reading further into the thread, The Great War looks like a much safer bet.
