I’ve noticed aircraft tend to descend to their low level attack altitude hundreds of miles away from the IP. Can someone explain how the top of decent point is calculated for the Low portion of Hi – Lo – Hi mission profiles? I’ve attached a sample scenario. Task some B-52s to attack the distant OPFOR targets.

Hmm can you set up a scenario actually showing what you're seeing please? The B-52s in your scen are on support missions, not strike missions.

How do you order your B-52s to attack? Are several different ways to do it.

I’ve attached an updated version of my test.

There are three missions for the B-52s loaded with a Hi- Lo- Hi payload.

1) On-Call Strike at 0100Z: This is created as a Support type mission. The thought was the bombers would fly a predefined route and would be directed to attack a target via Attack (Automated targeting) or Attack (Manual targeting). Neither function and the bombers continue to fly their track.
2) Pre-Planned Strike at 0200Z:Targets are predesignated and the bombers launch, refueling on the way to strike the targets. The bombers begin decent to their low level profile around 700 miles out from the target and will remain there until 700 miles away.
3) Search & Destroy at 0300Z:Two waypoints are designated as an S&D track around 1,000 miles from OPFOR targets. Bombers takeoff and remain at low altitude long before they get on station. Never make it there due to constant refueling.

I realize I can manually over ride altitudes and routes. This was intended to test the automation to reduce the micro-managing of assets. If there is a better way of doing this, please let me know.

On 1), yeah aircraft on support missions are flying their pattern and have no attack logics. This is by design. If you want them to go after stuff, either unassign, or re-assign to a strike mission or patrol mission.

2) If you look in the Database Viewer under Loadouts for the B-52 you will see what the default profile looks like. For the Mk84 loadout you've selected it says 700nm inbound/outbound dash on target at sea level I also see you've checked the 'off-angle attack' flag.

3) Okay here you can do a number of things to configure the behavior.
a) set the attack distance for the mission to 100nm or whatever. Then they use the transit altitude and speed when approaching the target until they reach 100nm, which is when attack/ingress settings are used.
b) set the Tanker Planner to refuel only when down to 50% of mission fuel, and to only look for tankers within 250nm.
c) the problem with this setup is that the aircraft are very cautions about stepping beyond bingo range. This means the aircraft will assume they have to take the ordnance with them home, which means the range will be considerably shorter than when you use a strike mission.
