I am stumped when it comes to hitting airfields, logic tells me that cratering the runway is enough to cripple the airfield. But after more than a dozen hits with MK82 500lb bombs the runway damage status according to the editor is 99% "operating with reduced capacity". Is there something else that I should be hitting to disable an airfield?

Check out page 123 of the manual. 8.4. Air Bases: How to Build Them, How to Destroy Them

I don't bother with runways anymore. Nowadays I go after the AC on the ground directly. Hit the hangars and large parking spots instead of the runways, taxiways etc. Planes are easy to destroy and do not get repaired...

Don´t forget that runways are heavily armored so you will need penetrator weapons like the BLU-109 and the like.
The mk82 is not a penetrator so it will likely only scratch the runway. This weapon is better used on open parking spaces to kill planes directly.

My favorite target is the runway access points.
There are relatively few of them and they are only lightly armored, so they can be taken out by ordinary HE warheads which generally speaking packs more explosives than penetrators.

Once they are disabled, I go after the planes on the ground ,as wild willie mentioned, since they are not going anywhere when they can´t reach the runway.

Hope this was useful.

Søren

If I have a bunch of penetrators.. I go after runway access points first.... Otherwise I target all the parked and soft stuff.....

It all depends on the target airfield. But you need to do recon and really look at the target set to decide. If you look at some of the Norwegian airbases, the AC are parked under ground and they have a dozen or more access points. Some airfields are tougher than others. Do the recon, understand the vulnerabilities and attack them:

-only one or two ammo storage facilities - go for them first, unless they too are underground
-only one or two access points, like schr75 said, take them out
-minimal and crowded parking - like Willie said, but some bases have dozens or more parking areas so do your recce and only hit the ones with AC on them
-Fuel & base ATC isn't modeled in the game so that vulnerability is not an option but I usually like to strike them as well just for completeness.

Whichever way you chose - you need to chose the right tool for the job:
-If its an underground target and you don't have GBU-28s, don't bother
-It its the Runways get a runway killing bomb (Durandal, BLU-109 etc), same if its a bunker
-If its open parking, a Mk-82 or anything will work but a CBU is the answer to do max damage
-For fuel storage, I like incendiaries - just for fun

Figure you what job you want to do and pick the right tool for the job.

I would think that if you have special runway cratering munitions available, then obviously take out the runway. If not, targeting the hangers would be best, as if you cannot destroy the runway, the next best thing is to destroy the aircraft on the ground.
