You know, another thing I understand as an adult that I didn't realize as a young man at the time of the cold war - The news kept us in the dark about a great many things that were happening...which I believe would have caused an uproar of public opinion.

Last year, when I spent a couple weeks in Omaha on work assignment, I discovered the S.A.C. Museum between Omaha and Lincoln NE. So I went to spend a day there... Among the exhibits was an extensive one about the USAF during the Cold War.
I was genuinely shocked to discover that while 'at peace' the Soviets shot down between 20 and 30 USAF aircraft, from the famous Gary Powers U-2 incident - to several B-52's and many others. A lot of our airmen died.

Yet as far as I recall, that was kept from us in the public.
Our military was playing a dangerous and deadly chess game back then... who knows what really goes on?

I don't really know anything about this, but it wouldn't surprise me. Nowadays, and I have no complaint about it, we know pretty quick after any soldier is killed, know where, how and his/her name. We still probably are not informed when some CIA people of whatever nationality, or some special ops people bite the bullet.

Well, there are hardly any guys from my generation (Vietnam - to just a couple years too young to go) who don't know someone who served there that claims they were in Cambodia or Laos secretly when we weren't supposed to be there.
So I take that to mean A) a lot of people tell stories, and B) there probably were a lot of people doing just that.

As you indicate below - today we seem to hear a lot...I don't know about that. But a couple generations ago that was most certainly Not the case.

In terms of today's internet world, being transparent on the international stage, even at the espionage/intelligence level, is a two edged sword, we know more, and realize how little we really do know. Hal

To quote Donald Rumsfeld:
"there are the things we know, the things we don't know, the things we don't know that we don't know..."

That about sums it up

Dr. Hal: Sure, we were in a period of one-way detente with North Korea. I remember it. I just hadn't remembered this particular incident. Also, by that time Russia had long since stopped subsidizing the Kim Dynasty and the North's relationship with China was, and still is, ambivalent.

The problem is North Korea rarely gets pushback. Whenever they do they back down. They are currently afraid to fire rockets on islands or conduct submarine-borne commando raids, two things I've seen while living in Korea, since South Korea has made it clear that local commanders won't need to go up the chain of command to disproportionately fire back into North Korean territory (I think 3:1 is the preferred ratio of counter-battery firepower).

Cheers,
CC

Vietnam vet....Ranger on the ground and George Washington is my hero.

My opinion in general?

No National leader should engage in a war he is not willing to win.

No National leader should engage in a war he is not willing to win quickly.

In the "good ol' days", the National Leader was right there in the front line and took the same risk as the lowest grunt, so he was less likely to go to war as he knew the risks firsthand.
