Hi all,

I've been casually playing SC games from the first incarnation and hope to show some new players a few tricks to help them into the game.
I will be making use of the fact that the AI also has Fog of War enabled to leave some positions empty.
Don't try this too often in multiplayer, as some players will find you out and make you pay dearly. ;)

So let's start with the allies as those have it a bit easier on the defensive side.

As a new player you will want to start at the easiest level.
The AI will get 20% less income this way.

I like to play with Fog of War on, 3-D units, black borders and without national colors to get a natural landscape on the map.

Turn 1

Let's take a look at the situation in Poland before the German AI rips me apart.

After it's done i'm down 4 units already.

Morale is already down, so my only hope is to hold on as long as possible.

War is starting and i've learned it's good to focus at what you're good at.
Atm my forces are only good at playing for time. There is no hope for victory yet.
So that's what my aim will be.

These positions are easy to overlook. Keep them in mind till Italy is in the war.

I will send the BEF to help. They will arrive with 4 units.
As they advise to put 5 units in France, I will send over some airpower also.
I will run as a scared kitten though when the war starts.

I will let the Red army take half of Poland. Gaining some space to keep the Germans at bay.

Just look at that AI. It surrounded a cavelry corp in the northwest and obliterated it.
In the west my units are surrounded, and the main force is already at the gates of Warsaw.
How to make the most of this situation?

Thank-you young whippersnapper

Shame you are using figures and not proper NATO counters, but I shall be watching just the same

I will sell the airforce, use doubleclick on a unit, use forcemarch, and turtle up around Warsaw.
The units that can't make it back I will send on a cruisade to reach German cities.
This way the Germans need to chase me or lose their cities.

In Russia I will prepare for the Blitz by moving every unit I have to the frontlines with forcemarch where needed.
Some I will replace later with Garrison units.

Before

And after.

In France, units are all over the place.
Equipped with 20/20 hindsight I know the Germans will attack eventually.

I also know the Maginot line is pretty strong.
Seeing all those strong armies in there seems like a waste to me.
So I will move them to the Ardennes and behind the rivers to defend Paris.
I will also not update the Maginot units to 10 strength, but leave them at 8.
That will be enough to prevent the Germans from routing them.
I will also sell the airforce and rely on the R.A.F.

I will ignore the "might" of Italy for now. And just leave a Garrison to play for time.

I've decided to opt for a strategy of ignoring Italy and focussing on taking down the Germans in the Atlantic.
So I move all the French and Royal navy ships out of the mediterranian sea with the new cruise mode.
The ones around Egypt go through the transfer point. It will take 4 turns.

The others I move with cruise mode around Spain.

Here's a bit of an overview on the movements.
I left one sub in raiding mode near Denmark.
This will be the bait to lure out the Kriegsmarine.

1. Like it

2. Gamey - I would never do that ahem... you didn't see what I did in Poland right?

3. Just one for the whole Italian front? Don't you shove a few units in the mountains?

2. Yes I did see.

3. Those Italians are too busy drinking all the good wine they encounter.
So I leave it nearly wide open. Morale will go down as take take city after city.
There is 1 more corp coming up from Africa though. So I might leave that one.
It's a good bet that the Germans wreck me before Italy can really hurt me.

Turn 2
Canada is joining us.
We will get some nice destroyers to help us later on in the game.

A bad situation for the Poles gets even worse.

The bait I set is starting to make some noise.

Up until now i've been saving up all my MPP so I could start researching at the earliest moment.
Anti-Submarine Warfare and Infantry Warfare will be up next.

Not much to do in Poland but to hang on and reinforce units.
The Germans routed alot more of my men.
I did manage to hit their HQ in the northwest for 1 point and it retreated to a safer spot the next turn.
In the southwest my cavalry went for a sneak attack on Brno, only to be met by and infantry corp.

In France "Operation switch around" is still in full effect.
Many units are being repaired. Entrenchment should be done before the Germans come.

And for some another view of the situation.

Meanwhile in the UK the Royal Navy is getting an upgrade for when the bait is succesfull.

Turn 3

The B.E.F. arrives in France.

Let's see what the Germans do. They keep on wrecking my troops.

The bait is starting to annoy the Germans as they send out a Uboot too investigate.

Some more events popup. What to do now?
Banning the communists will increase morale and so will give us better odds at hanging on in France.
But it will also lower income temporarily for the Sovjets as their war readiness will lower 3-5%.
I did take the Yes option as I will need the extra morale for when the Italians take some towns.

I let the Sovjets play the BadBoys for a bit to make them happy again.
It will give us a bit of a bufferzone for when Finland decides to declare war.

Since we need a kickass Royal Navy I will upgrade the research to two slots asap.

The USA is in it for the longterm, so for now I focus on their economy.

The remainder of the turn will follow tomorrow.

Turn 3 continued

As I reported earlier, my bait was attracting some attention.

So I decided to move in some French Destroyers to inflict some damage.
Only to get ambushed

Luckily help was already waiting nearby.
After some attacks the sub managed to submerge.
A mistake from my side, but I prioritized cutting off the passage through Denmark.

Get some free ports? Yes

Who said the French navy was useless during the war?

The AI decided to attack the French cruiser.

Meanwhile in Poland
The Cavalry is still roaming around.
And Warsaw is being attacked from the west and by air.

In France the frontline is forming up nicely.

Do we want more cannon fodder? Yes.
And they can even finish some proper fortifications in time.

Norway is pissed as usual with so many ships around.
I can't be bothered with it, since they get invaded anyway.

Turn 4

The Germans attack with their full might.
I had hoped to hold on one more turn, but I got unlucky.
Still held out till the 16th of november though.

I did force some German units to chase me around though.

It's a sad day.

The Sovjets can expect some reinforcements when the Germans invade.

Now it's my turn again.
The Kriegsmarine decided to attack a French battleship and knocked it down to 4 stength points.
A second French battleship took their revenge and the UK sub sank their opponent.
While all this was going on, the Royal Navy and the remnants of the French fleet took down both subs.

After the fight raiding commenced and everybody went home.
The battered French will stay safe in port so the Germans won't get any National Morale from sinking them.

0 losses vs 2 subs and a capital ship sunk.
Operation Bait part one completed.

On the French frontline the B.E.F. is guarding the rear.
As soon as the Germans break through, they will leave for either Norway or northern Africa.

More free units? Yes please.

Naughty Sovjets! Times never change...

Quite some MPP losses for Germany sofar.
Meanwhile the whole Royal Navy is getting upgraded and UK research is maxed out.

More on Wednesday.

I've been a bit busy at work, so this will be the time to catch up.

19 december 1939
On land nothing is happening except for bringing in more reinforcements.

I do catch another German ship in my net though.
First I soften it up with my subs, and then send in the big guns to finish it off.

Even then I take heavy losses.

How are you able to get so many pictures in one post?

I see you brought the RAF over to France. Does this close proximity give advantages? I was seemingly able to keep the RAF in the UK and have them intercept but maybe that was sub-optimal?

Thanks

The French navy is quite useless vs a simple destroyer.
Meanwhile the real Navy is getting upgraded.

Near Newfoundland i find a Uboot sneaking around. The hunt begins!

My diplomatic efforts are focussed on Sweden and Finland as I don't see any hits from the Axis on Turkey and Spain.
This will make it a bit easier on the Sovjets, and reduce the income for Germany.

The German subs are trying to break out. Sadly my destroyer fleet isn't ready yet.
This is earlier then expected after they lost 2 ships and 2 uboot vessels already.

They keep getting hammered with raiding though.

You get a morale bonus for France with 5 units there.
And it's easy to move them back and forth, so why not. :)
And yes, if you keep them with the HQ, they get a bonus!

About the pictures. I have my own domain with hosting. So I upload the pictures there and link the images.
I'm also not limited to any picture size as with the Matrix forums.

2 march 1940

My earlier decision to help the Finnish people, combined with diplomacy payed off.
Finland is now 27% toward the allies.

And I get a nice morale boost.

After this moment of joy I got caught with my pants down.
My homecountry got declared on very early.

This is the current situation as war is declared.
My riverline is not yet completed. The B.E.F is ready to bail though.

To make matters worse, the Kriegsmarine is also going for a breakout!

And so the big hunt begins. I need to finish off the Kriegsmarine before I attempt to take Norway.

3 april 1940

The French light cruiser near Canada helped me find the German Uboot again.
Sadly my destroyers ain't upto the task. I lose 2 points vs 1.

I do manage to sink the destroyer near Denmark though and the Royal Navy is on the hunt.
Not much else to do but to reinforce the units in the Netherlands and Belgium.
And I get a second HQ in France. Now if only the tank unit would come in time.

On the German turn they take Denmark and Norway through the scripted events.
They take down the Netherlands and Luxembourg.

This research hit is very welcome. Al my ships will have to go back to port to upgrade though.

Let's see how well my defensive line will hold up.
The new HQ is not yet operational though as it's in auto mode set on the Paris region.

During the German turn they manage to take out Belgium and take some shots at my riverline.
I took Iceland from the surrendered Danes to protect my shipping.
Italy prepares for war and Germany is changing it's convoy lines due to heavy losses.

17 may 1940
A nice fortress got completed and the tank unit finally arrived.

In Norway my Special Forces will attempt to take the town.
I messed up and should have had some ships there already to block the port though.

Convoy raiding continues. French morale is dropping because the Germans are approaching Paris.
What a bunch of propaganda. My riverline is holding firmly.
A german panzer unit lost 5 strength vs my armies 1 strength loss.

Huge damage was done to the attacking forces.
You can't see most of it as the cowards retreated.
The Luftwaffe is reigning supreme though. I lost many strenth points there.

One more Uboot caught in the Atlantic.
It's diving alot though, so this might take one more turn.

At Narvik I'm pounding on the port and city.
This shouldn't take long.

The riverline with armies is still holding.
I even had MPP to spare, so I reinforced the Maginotline.
I will have those retreat as soon as there is a breakthrough on the riverline.
Then all units will gather around Paris.

This is a welcome upgrade.

The Germans managed to break through with a combination of 2 tactical bomber attacks and no less then 6 army and tank attacks.
They kept rotating in fresh troops for the attack. Other parts of the line are holding.

The trapped sub found the only weakspot in a French light cruiser, which it sank to get away.

The German breakthrough forces me to leave the Maginot line early,
but it gives me an opportunity to punish an AI mistake.
I hit the fighter unit for 3 damage.
Meanwhile I move out the UK air units and move back the HQ's.

I cannot find the Uboot again.

At Narvik, bad weather is grounding my planes.
Meanwhile I move back most of the Royal Navy for upgrades as I can't locate the Kriegsmarine.
They might have doubled back around Denmark again.

The combined efforts of the fleet and Special Forces forced the German garrison out of Narvik!
Meanwhile the invasion fleet is steaming across the North Sea.

In North Africa the buildup of UK forces is starting.
Cities are bombed, and the Italian corps is taking a beating in morale and supply.

In France my riverline has been penetrated at 2 positions, and I'm forced to fall back.
Some units with good supply will hold till the end to delay the Germans.

During the German turn you will see the blitz in full swing. The A.I. is trying to surround many units.

I move my invasion fleet across the coastline of Norway, while I setup a trap as I'm sure the Germans can't resist such a prize target.

Meanwhile in Narvik. While I wasn't able to move after attacking, the Germans moved back into the city again.
Very annoying! So the attack continues. I have left only 1 carrier there to help with the bombing, and 2 more are on the way.
The remainder of the Royal Navy is moving back for upgrades and another sneaky setup.

I've been talking about Italy being pretty useless.
As you can see in the south, they took out my only garrison, but it took them ages.
I will be protecting Lyon as it's a NM Objective.

As you can see the Germans advanced some more during their turn.
Also another fortification got finished, and I managed to rescue most of my corps from the Maginot line.
It will be interesting to see what the AI will do next.

As I said before, the transports are a tempting target.
A German heavy cruiser showed up to try and take them out.
Luckily I had put some leftover French vessels in the way, and a Royal Navy battleship took down what remained.

Meanwhile in Narvik another setback. Bombarding the port failed this turn.
I might have to bring in some more ships.

In France I move back almost all my units around Paris for a last stand.

During the German turn their intentions become quite clear. Another pincer attack, surrounding my whole force!
Look at my poor engineers. I'd better reinforce them.

25 august 1940

And now for the last turn of the day I will leave you with a few good cliffhangers.

First of all. I've found the secret Uboot base in Greenland that Germany is using to resupply.
Something will have to be done about that.

In Africa I keep pounding the Italians. The cities and ports are bombed into rubble.

Around Denmark I set another trap with my freshly upgraded Royal Navy.
The French are the bait while I'm raiding.

Meanwhile in France I have repaired whatever I could. I actually have MMP's left over...

In Southern France the Italians found out their tank had a second gear. They steam onto the Atlantic coast.
But it's all irrelevant. Keeping hold of Paris, and keeping my armies intact is what's important.

During the German turn you can see my taunting is working.

On land the Germans try to close the gap. I've moved the HC's around.
One will be decoy sitting in a city for protection. The other sits behind soms units.
One corps in the east will move around and wreak havoc where possible.
Considering it's the 25th of august already, and Germany attacked in march, this is a pretty good result.
Who knows how long I can hold on to Paris.
The tank unit is at lvl 5 entrenchment and it's surrounded by loyal sacrifices.

8 september 1940

Found a sub in the northwest. It's down to the bottom of the ocean now.

I'm all repaired up, but i'm probably in for a beating.

The French blockade / bait ship did it's work, and the Royal Navy finishes the job.

New bait is in place already.

The German air and landpower is wrecking me in one turn.
The shuffling around of units after attacking is really doing a number on my defense.
France surrenders on the 15th of september. Which isn't bad considering the attack started in march.

Lots of events this time. Also the UK got 5 research levels done of which 2 breakthough.

And we get another free ship.

I also managed to take Narvik, and the UK is landing 3 units and an HQ.
In Africa, I took out the first Italian corps of many, and operated over the remainder of the RAF and Bomber command.

I did quite some damage to the Germans already. The will be low on MPP and units for sure, when going east.

For now this will be my last post of this AAR.
I hope you've enjoyed it, and that it will get you started as a new player.
I'm moving on to multiplayer testing now. And a super duper secret MOD project.

Since the MP patch was delayed a bit, I decided to continue my game for a few turns.
Check out the Sovjet Blitz in august 1942. There will be 4 or 5 pockets in a few turns.
Full convoy MPP towards the Sovjets really helps.
I believe they were upto 1400 MPP at one point.

After the UK got naval domination in the Atlantic, the Italian Navy was wiped out within a few turns.
Meanwhile we slowly grinded units in Africa, and took Norway with our 5 Carriers as airsupport.

This is fascinating stuff noknok! I've tried to watch some "let's play" videos but it was hard for me to see, up close, what is actually happening after turns. I've been stalking this game for about 2 weeks and seeing something like this makes me want it more. I love the close-ups and captions of what you're doing and why you did it.

That was one of my questions, regarding this game, if you can "change history" by coming up with your own strategy and see if it works.

I guess you sorta' can?
