Il Duce was inspired by the recent Chinese Nationalist offensive. In China itself the Japanese manoeuvre what they can quietly.

1st Infantry Division are not made welcome on the beaches of Nice.

It does not improve France's position much. Turn continues on a 4. Weather is 1. Glorious summer.

AXIS #2 JUL/AUG 1940

A double move has given the French the breathing space to consolidate. At OKH the corks have been stopped. We are in a new phase of the battle.

The French have a strong array of fighters that inhibits any German air attacks this impulse.

Allied ground strikes fortuitously disorganised three German units that had advanced beyond fighter cover. But the Wehrmacht can advance regardless. We cross the Seine and the Maginot Line, as the French withdraw from Alsace Lorraine.

Just for a change, Japanese ground strikes fail.

Our delegation to an exchange of military aviation expertise has been rebuffed by the FCO in London.

AXIS #4 JULY/AUGUST 1940

The French consolidated further and the Chinese Nats moved east with light forces in South China towards the Canton railway.

Germany and Japan land, Italy combined.

The Italians send aircraft to the West Med and three subs to Cape St Vincent, hunting the French merchant marine.

Searches in the West Med are Axis 4, Allies 3. The Gabbianos find and sink two cps. The other aborts to Marseille.

The Luftwaffe have no interest rousing the large French fighter force for the sake of a ground strike.

Instead, we again bomb Hull. A heavy raid, but the same result.

I have nothing personally against the place. The British started this war and these cynical attacks on civilians.

A German Mech Div scorches along the Brittany coast to occupy Brest and steal French oil.

The ships rebase to Bordeaux, deep and safe currently.

In France, von Rundstedt races across the Seine into Normandy with significant, and fast, panzers and motorized infantry. Guderian switches flanks to take his place.

The initial idea was to squeeze the French kessel without recourse to air power, so they could not use their three decent fighters.

But when Georges elects to add defensive HQ support against a blitz to the NE of Paris, Stukas are required.

"Go big or go home," say the French. They throw up everything they can. The Luftwaffe responds with an extra Bf109 of its own, the best and last organised fighter in theatre.

A grand air battle results.

A bitter disappointment for the vaunted French airforce. The Stukas get through and the Messerschmitts clear the skies efficiently.

Looking to rescue his reputation, Umezu sends strong infantry with artillery support to assault Chiang's weak left flank.

There are losses again. The shame is great. But the advance cuts Chiang's supply line to Chihkiang, and he is disorganised.

The third and largest attack rolls 8. French forces are retreated without losses for either side. There is a third point of assault on Paris and there are panzers on the Loire.

AXIS #6 JULY/AUG 1940

RAF ground strikes have disorganised three front line units. But it is better the bombs fall on our brave soldiers than our wives and children in Essen or Nuremberg.

Germany and Italy land, Japan combined.
