I read that an Army Division requires some 144,000 tons to load. That is about 24 ships. That is a lot of shipping.

A Liberty ship carried 10,000 tons. My bad. A division takes less than 24 ships.

10,000 tons was its designed capacity, most carried much more.
Here is an interesting graphic. http://www.usmm.org/capacity.html

- Well, Japs, sink one Liberty ship and 260 Sherman tanks go up in flames. What say you?
- But decisive battle...
- Yeah, decisive battle...

In the standard game the absolute minimum you need for an amphibious load is.

USA Div load (12K troop, 18K cargo)
USMC Div load (13K troop, 19K cargo)

IRL the usual (combat) loading for invasion purposes were:
1 APA/AP for an infantry/engineer/recon battalion,
1 AKA/AK for a regiment to carry stuff (regimental Artillery, AT Guns, Trucks, Jeeps, etc.)
1 AKA/AK for Artillery/Tank battalion
- so a "standard" infantry division with 9 infantry Bns, Recon unit, Engineer unit and 3 Artillery Bns would take 11 APA/AP, 6 AKA/AK
- you can substitute AKA/AK for a about 2 LSTs (These usually carried LVTs for infantry, DUCKWs for Regimental stuff, plus pre-loaded Trucks/Trailers/Palletes, Artillery or Tanks)

For pure transport purposes the Division could be loaded to Queen Mary&Co. while the rest of the unit is transported on whatever xAK Convoy.

The 144.000 tons was for a move in "strategic mode" in game terms, combat-loaded for "amphib mode" it would require even more.

Barb's combat loading figures seem to be correct. The Guadalcanal invasion force consisted of 13 AP, 6 AK and 4 APDs to land a reinforced Marine Division. However, a large part of the artillery and motor transport had to be left behind in the staging area.

Task Group 62.1 Convoy

Transport Group X-Ray (for Guadalcanal)

Transport Division A
5 Marine Regiment, less one battalion
AP Fuller
AP American Legion
AK Bellatrix

Transport Division B
Headquarters, 1 Marine Division
1 Marine Regiment
AP McCawley
AP Barnett
AP George F. Elliot
AK Libra

Transport Division C
Special Weapons Battalion
5 Battalion, 11 Marine Regiment
Elements, 3 Marine Defense Battalion
Supporting elements
AP Hunter Liggett
AK Alchiba
AK Fomalhaut
AK Betelgeuse

Transport Division D
2 Marine Regiment, less a battalion
AP Crescent City
AP President Hayes
AP President Adams
AK Alhena

Transport Group Yoke (for Tulagi)

Transport Division E
2 Battalion, 5 Marine Regiment
2 Battalion, 2 Marine Regiment
Battery E, 11 Marine Regiment
Elements, 3 Marine Defense Battalion
1 Marine Parachute Battalion
Elements, 1 Marine Raider Battalion
AP Neville
AP Zeilin
AP Heywood
AP President Jackson

Transport Division 12
1 Marine Raider Battalion, less one company
APD Colhoun
APD Little
APD McKean
APD Gregory
