I should not speak for Robert. He can speak for himself, but the Falcons were flying close air support over his ground unit at Madioen. Madioen is an important base at this point, because it is a large airfield near Soerabaja, which has been a point of contention for the Japanese. He had a good (well... good for the Dutch) land unit protecting the hex: stronger than I anticipated actually. I expected only to find a base force there. Fortunately, I moved a division into the hex to attack. He was probably expecting an attack from a regiment or at most the 65th brigade. If only a regiment had been present, the Dutch unit at Madioen, with air support in good defensive terrain, probably would have held off the attack and inflicted significant casualties on my unit. As it happens, however, my unit was a division, which Robert had no way of knowing, because the unit moved in an attacked the next day.

This result is so surprising...would be interesting to see the replay...to see why this, why it happened...unbelievable.
Probably because of heavy rain? and dispersed escorting formations? But shouldn't it have affected the defenders alike - in RL at least?

This happened to me recently in my other game as well. 18 Zeros failed to protect 27 Vals from 8 Cap fighters, and 4 Vals were lost. I checked the leaders of all of the units engaged, and they were fine. The Zero Squadron leader and the Nell leader are exceptional actually. Just bad luck. On the other hand, my escort fighters did a pretty good job the other day, limiting bomber losses when flying into 50 fighters unexpectedly. So, sometimes it goes your way; sometimes it does not.

I have been busy the past two weeks and started a second game. The first turns of my other game were consuming most of my free time, so I was unable to update the AAR. The pace is slowing now, and I have the time to resume the AAR. So where did I leave off...

March 4th, 1942

Naval search showed a group of allied ships at Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean. I had begun prepping a paratroop SNLF for the island a few days before, so a naval strike was ordered to attack the shipping or the port. The ships had moved into port, however, so the strike came off against the port.

March 10th.

Japanese forces are in position to begin an attack on Soerabaja. Additional units are moving in from the south and the northwest to gain control of all three hexsides and prevent retreat. The final tally for the day shows 18 Japanese fighter losses to 20 allied fighters downed. However, the allied fighters also flamed 34 Japanese bombers. Not a happy day for the empire. This is the second time that 821Bobo has surprised me by heavily reinforcing a base after I had thought that he had conceded air superiority and evacuated his air forces from the base. He did the same over Soerabaja.

And Robert tells me that he is receiving reports of an invasion of Horn Island in his replay. I have not invaded Horn Island as yet, so it appears that we have a sync bug. We may both have to reinstall the game to proceed. My turn for the 18th is finished, but I am awaiting his reply on the possible sync bug... so the game is momentarily on hold until we resolve what may be a technical issue.

Skip-bombing at low altitude by level bombers was a common tactic of the U.S. in the Pacific. It was a practice adopted from the British and Germans who used it against bridges in Europe. The B-17 was tried as a skip bomber, but found lacking. Most skip-bombing attacks were conducted by 2E bombers. Nevertheless, the B-17 was used at low altitudes as an anti-ship bomber. I am not sure why so many object to this practice in the game.

March 19-20th.

Slow days. More allied air interdiction of the units moving along the dirt trail toward central Burma, and Japanese raids over the redoubt at Padang. A group of Japanese TBs also engages a group of PT boats stationed at Medan, as actions commence in northern Sumatra. One PT boat was lost and the rest fled the engagement.

It could well have been "mast bombing" instead; BTW, skip and mast bombing were developed and employed by the US Army Air Force from 1943 on, I think...

BTW: didn't you have any naval escort to the convoy? I'm asking just check the vulnerability of the low flying big bombers against AA fire.

The convoy consisted of 1 AK, 4 AKLs, and 3 PBs. It was carrying top-secret cargo to Moresby... jajaja. The Boston Maru was able to land its devices, albeit some where disabled. (The top secret device was not disabled). It was in fairly good shape after the attack, with only 32 sys damage, and 6 flt damage. It sank after unloading its devices at Moresby, however, when it hit rocks: not a happy voyage for the Boston Maru and its crew... jajaja. At least the "top-secret" cargo was delivered.

I think it was because the game gave low level 4E bombers too much accuracy at hitting ships, far out of the norm, so many had a house rule limiting 4E bombing against naval vessels to a higher altitude, not sure if that has been fixed in any of the newer mods.

This has not been my experience since the old WiTP, before AE. Of course, others experience may vary. Level bombers did hit ships on occasion. The point is simply that 4Es are going to bomb something: ships, airfields, industry, troops... something. One always hears complaints that they are unrealistically good against shipping, against troops, at night, etc... . The allied strategy for the Pacific War was to bring their 4Es in range of Japan. That was the whole strategy. If 4Es are bombing ships, troops, etc... they are not bombing my airfields and industry. If they are bombing at night, they are on the ground in the daylight. The problem of 4Es is not solved by house rules, but by finding ways to defend against them.

In Burma, allied fighters from Rangoon sweep Chiang Mai looking for the Oscars that ambushed the British bombers yesterday. They don't find the Ics, but a couple of Oscar Ias somehow somehow were flying over the base from Rahaeng. They were outnumbered and had rookie pilots and the results were unhappy for the IJA.

The squadron of Ias was set to escort bombers over Rangoon several days ago; then set to cap Rahaeng, but I forgot to change the range to 0, so they were caught over Chiang Mai. 5 Ias went down as a result of my oversight.
