How could you strike PH on day two from 11 hexes away? I was talking about a Japanese opponent who stayed withim Val distance of PH over night after the 1st days attack for a 2nd day follow up strike. I am not the only allied player who has sortied survivors and roughed up the KB that remainned near PH, 11 hexes away is not near nor withing 2 day striking range.

The strike on the 2nd day was a fighter sweep. 11 hexes is the maximum ¨normal¨ range for zeros. I was hoping, actually, that he would sortie his CAs and CLs from Pearl.

Dec. 14th and more PT boat action across the Pacific. The PTs at Pearl ran into the BBs covering KB and more BB ammo was dumped into the ocean. Japanese SCTFs also encountered PT boats in the PHillipines in several inconclusive engagements. The allies continued to have bad luck in the submarine war. Several allied subs finally found clear lines to targets and scored two hits, one an SC and one on an AP, but both torpedos were duds. The Seal paid a heavy price for the poor allied torpedo design.

ASW attack near Iba at 78,75

Japanese Ships
SC Ch 15
SC Ch 17

Allied Ships
SS Seal, hits 8

That is the 3rd allied sub hit hard by depth charge attacks. Nells attacking the port at Manila struck another with another 800 Kg bomb.

Morning Air attack on Manila , at 79,77

Weather in hex: Partial cloud

Raid detected at 37 NM, estimated altitude 17,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 14 minutes

Japanese aircraft
G3M2 Nell x 24

No Japanese losses

Allied Ships
SS Sailfish, Bomb hits 1, heavy damage

I have been very lucky against the U.S. subs so far. I did not really target them on day 1 at the port in Manila. One group of Betties struck the port, but the majority of my aircraft bombed the airfields. I don't think that I sank any subs on Dec. 7th, but I think that I have sunk 4 or 5 since. Always hard to know with subs if they are sunk or not.

The KB has moved west, northwest of Pearl, but sent in another attack, and something strange happened. One group of Kates carried torpedos. I have never seen this before after Dec. 7th, and I was not very happy about it. Several Kates hit balloons and the whole squadron took heavy flak. Yamamota is going to have a long talk with Nagumo at the debriefing. They did manage to get a torpedo hit on the Nevada. There was no sign of Arizona, and I think that she may have joined California, West Virginia, and Oklahoma after the last attack. Sinking sounds after the battle may indicate that Nevada joined her fallen comrades. Whatever the case, Nevada is in very bad shape. Pennylvania, Maryland, and Tennessee are almost certainly still afloat. 41 fewer Kates flew today than on Dec. 7th. Pearl Harbor has been a bloody battle and a test of will for both sides.

Morning Air attack on Pearl Harbor , at 180,107

In Luzon, bombers struck the ground forces at Manila again. Anns have been harrying the base forces at Bataan, and Sonias came in close support of a Japanese bombardment at Lucena. The Kingfishers returned, flying out of Manila and Bataan, and poor Japanese command had the CAP fighters flying at 12K. They did not intercept, but fortunately for the Japanese, the Kingfishers missed their target... this time.

In Malaysia the battle and the race continues in and around Alor Star. The two allied units at Alor continued moving south to try to link up with the units caught on the railline one hex south. Japanese bombers struck both the units at Alor Star and the units on the railine. Allied bombers from Singapore struck the Japanese position south of Alor Star. A number of Blenheims and Hudsons were damaged by Nates flying CAP over the Japanese lines. The Nate pilots did their best, but their light machine guns could not flame any allied bombers.

2 Allied units remain in Georgetown, and 2 allied units remain in Taiping, trying to hold open a line of retreat for the Indian brigades. Japanese combat engineers reinforced the armor and recon position south of Alor Star, but the infantry was delayed another day reaching the Japanese lines. The delay makes things much more interesting in northern Malaysia. Can the Indian brigades withdraw in good order into Georgetown and then to Taiping and freedom or will the Japanese be able to close the trap?

In other war news, the Japanese have taken Sorong, Hollandia, and Madang along the northern coast of New Guinea. A small unit of Japanese light tanks took the airfield and port at Victoria Point. The siege at Hong Kong continued with another day of aerial and artillery bombardments. Both Japanese and Chinese units continue to manuever in China as both sides try to form a coherent front.

Task force Z, Ryujo, and the Japanese fast BBs have all disappeared from sight of the enemy. One U.S. CV was last sighted yesterday about 160 miles northeast of Guadalcanal, heading west, after sinking 2 minelayers. Japanese search planes have reported no sightings of the other U.S. CV. All the U.S. CAs and CLs, with the probable exception of Raleigh, which took 2 topedoes and an 800 Kg bomb on Dec. 7th, have left Pearl and have not been seen since the 8th of December. San Francisco took a torpedo from a Japanese sub, but she is certainly still afloat and probably headed to a friendly port for repairs.

Dec. 15th and the allies score their first submarine kill off the coast of Japan, a small cargo ship returning from resupplying Chich Jima.

Sub attack near Nagoya at 110,62

Japanese Ships
xAK Nitii Maru, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
xAK Syohei Maru
PB Kinsyo Maru #2

Allied Ships
SS Spearfish

Nitii Maru was abandoned by her escort, and Spearfish closed in later to finish the kill. Off the coast of Borneo, a Japanese DD roughs up another Dutch sub: a few hits only, and she should be back in the action in a few weeks.

First Air Fleet is now moving west away from the Hawaiian Islands. 2 days have passed since the U.S. CV was spotted near Guadalcanal. Ryujo and the light Japanese carriers also have not been spotted for the last 3 days. The war seems to be settling in and the frantic activity of the first few days has subsided, for the moment at least.

In China, both sides continue to manuever. Poor weather has hampered Japanese air interdiction of units fleeing the central Chinese plain, and the race is on to Nanyang. It looks as though many Chinese units will escape, as no Japanese bombers have appeared to slow the Chinese retreat for 48 hours: a much needed reprieve for the Chinese.

You ask why I go to mop up an isolated island such as this so early? I thought that there might be a few presents, such as this B-17, on the runway. Whatever the case, it is one less place the P-40 remnants can hide, only to re-emerge later.

In China, Japanese bombers were grounded by weather for a third day in a row, and Chinese units are making their way back to Nanyang from the Chinese plain unimpeded. After three days of clear weather and heavy bombing of Hong Kong by Sallies, Sonias, and Lillies from 3rd Air, 5th Air, and the China Command, Japanese battalion commanders give the order, "Up and over." In Malaysia, Sallies and Lilies come in close support of a Japanese attack south of Alor Star. The 15th Indian brigade is bloodied, but holds the line gallantly, instead of retreating to Georgetown. Off the coast of Borneo, the CVL Hermes and a screening TF moved into position south of Singkawang during the night, looking for targets. Morning found the Japanese fast BBs at Singkawang, but a storm broke over the western coast of Borneo at daybreak, hampering air operations for both sides. Hermes was able to get off an unescorted strike against the BBs. The strike arrived in the midst of the storm, and Japanese CAP did not spot the approaching torpedo bombers. Alas, for the allies, the storm also affected the torpedo attack.

The Japanese TF was caught completely by surprise by the attack, but Nells, ready on the runway, had their own surprise for the Hermes: torpedoes, brought in the night before by a fast transport TF from Saigon. They followed the Swordfish back to Hermes. Unfortunately for the Japanese, the Japanese pilots faired no better than their British counterparts in the poor weather.

If there were so many Zeros at Singkawang, why, you ask, did Hermes' planes encounter so few yesterday? Well... as I say, the attack caught me by surprise. I was not worried about bombs on the BBs... torpedos... that is another matter. The Zeros had flown a long way and were on stand-down to prepare for the upcoming their air battle against the RAF.

At Luzon, aerial and artillery bombardments of the allied positions in Manila and Lucena continue. The allies reinforce the position in Manila with the 1st PA division, bringing their total AV in the hex to a little over 400. Latest reports have the Japanse AV in the hex at a little more than 900. The allied division at Lucena shows a little over 100 AV. The Japanese units there are two brigade fragments from the crack 4th brigade, the 8th tank regiment, and the 2nd Recon.

In China, the Japanese come again at Hong Kong, overruning the final British fortifications. Now, the British hold only a 100 m line around the Harbor, but they do not surrender: not even the heavily battered Canadians. A good show of resolve by the Commonwealth forces.

A Japanese division crosses the river south of Loyang and breaks through the Chinese resistance as the pincer movement on Nanyang commences in earnest. It will arrive too late, however, to trap most of the Chinese units as the allies have done a very good job in China getting their units moving and into coherent defensive positions. 821Bobo is putting his extensive experience as a ground forces general to good use.

Dec. 19th and the Japanese submarine fleet find two more small Dutch tankers on their way to Balikpapan, no doubt, to take remove more fuel and oil.

The Dutch must be thinking, at this point, that every nautical mile of ocean contains a Japanese submarine. Allied submarines have arrived along the coast of Japan. In the night they found several targets, but failed to make effective attacks. Unfortunately, they will get better.

In western Borneo and Malaysia, Japanese Lillies, Anns, and Sonias, strike allied positions at Georgetown. More fighters sweep Singapore, but the allies elect not to fly their Buffalos today. A Japanese amphibious TF lands at Manado in the DEI. Both Japanese CVEs and the British CVL Hermes, flying swordfish, are known to be operating nearby, so the central passage of the DEI appears to be heating up.

Daylight over Luzon and the Betties shifted their target from the airfields to U.S. armor that had advanced on Cabantuan to assault the Japanese paratroopers who had landed there on Dec. 7th.

Morning Air attack on 192nd Tank Battalion, at 80,76 (Cabanatuan)

Weather in hex: Light cloud

Raid spotted at 39 NM, estimated altitude 8,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 13 minutes

Allied ground losses:

Ground Attack: 2 x 250 kg GP Bomb, 4 x 60 kg GP Bomb
5 x G4M1 Betty bombing from 6000 feet
Ground Attack: 2 x 250 kg GP Bomb, 4 x 60 kg GP Bomb

Morning Air attack on 194th Tank Battalion, at 80,76 (Cabanatuan)

Weather in hex: Light cloud

Raid spotted at 40 NM, estimated altitude 10,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 14 minutes

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 9
G4M1 Betty x 20

No Japanese losses

Allied ground losses:
Vehicles lost 24 (2 destroyed, 22 disabled)

Aircraft Attacking:
20 x G4M1 Betty bombing from 6000 feet
Ground Attack: 2 x 250 kg GP Bomb, 4 x 60 kg GP Bomb

The paratroopers withdrew to the dot hex northeast of Cabanatuan that day and did not suffer an attack from the U.S. armor. The clear terrain in Cabanatuan made for a perfect killing field for the Betties and their 250 Kg bomb are capable of piercing the armor on the Grants. The weather cooperated with the Japanese and gave the pilots clear sight lines to their targets.

Now this, i.e. the high casualties rate among the armour, is interesting to me;

20 M-bombers, Betties, which is definitely not a lot for an area bombardment (and the recent discussion in John 3D in his AAR about the supposed inflated effectiveness of high altitude air bomardment in game comes in mind), at a height which is not low (6000 feet = 1650 meters?) - and the Betties are not equipped with Norden sights either,I presume;

most important, the Stuarts/Grants were not queued on a road moving, I guess, but rather deployed in order of battle...therefore, this is ceirtanly an exceptional achievement for the Japanese crews....;

This, regarding the simulation of - non low - bombing in game, said,

in my game experience I met extremely few cases of casualties among: guns, armoured vehicles, trucks, air bombing induced;

I was upset, startled and quite perplexed at this feature; this is stuff that should be the primary target for air strikes, and the most vulnerable and visible as well, times more than infantry who appears being the only recipient of air bombs; actually, I've started suspecting that the casualties among non-combatant troops comprise also those for gun personnell - which would be very good if confirmed, but still this cannot account for 0,05 % "Casualties" among trucks, guns et similia as said;

I think at support bombardemnts against coastal guns for example, in the case when the objective is uber-reconned, firing and ground spotted as well; the objective should be pretty vulnerable - if not conveninently fortified, but still NO results (or extremely rare);

than I see your combat report; I understand the tank unit was the only one in that area; this suggests that casualties-hits are first and foremost related with target selection, i.e. unit selection, reminding also of a recent post by Lowpe in his AAR where he stated that armoured units, in his understanding and experience, tend for any reason to be the last, among the stack of units present in location, being targeted by air bombardment;

but again, even in an infantry unit there are guns and soft vehicles;

- Perplexed -

Off the coast of Borneo, the CVL Hermes and a screening TF moved into position south of Singkawang during the night, looking for targets. Morning found the Japanese fast BBs at Singkawang, but a storm broke over the western coast of Borneo at daybreak, hampering air operations for both sides. Hermes was able to get off an unescorted strike against the BBs. The strike arrived in the midst of the storm, and Japanese CAP did not spot the approaching torpedo bombers. Alas, for the allies, the storm also affected the torpedo attack.
