The Defence of Saratov Begins One Hex North of Krasnodar

Something should be said about the movements of 1st Panzer Army. It danced around the battlespace better than George Best could around the football pitch. To continue the football analogy, the Soviet side was using zonal defence instead of man marking. So when 1st Panzer Army was nowhere important, no one picked them up. When they were somewhere very important no one was left to pick them up.

1st Panzer Army surrounded Rostov on turn 54, got to the Black Sea coast at Novorossiysk on turn 56 and the gates of Grozny on turn 57 before turning north and crossing the Volga east of Stalingrad on turn 59. By turn 65 it had crossed the Volga again north of Saratov.

I know the feeling was units could not have been afforded for the defence of the Caucasus - but is there a question of could you afford not to? A few units at Krasnodar to slow the Panzer army down was less than the units needed to stop them at Saratov.

(For those who do not know George Best this will enlighten you https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dbVatiHiQrc you can also similarly use Eric Cantona or Zinedine Zidane)

I think Turn 59 was decisive from that standpoint. Ist Panzer Army had taken much territory in the South, but it seemed the Soviets did not retract the big bulge in the center to start thinking the defensive lines needed to shorten to free units for the South. From My perspective that was the last turn to stretch the lines South. By turn 65 it is far too late.

Right from turn 1 of this game I already had our surrender statement ready for when the Soviet team entered Berlin. I guess I may as well describe it now. It was to announce that all the Axis team that had been playing the game had in fact been international identity fraudsters who had hijacked our accounts. Having overpowered them we could welcome our Soviet liberators and look for their help in our leading the new international socialist Germany as we were in fact life time communists. Oh yes and sorry about some of the damage left by some of our nationals the past few years.

Here was the turn 66 femto-management tasks:

Turn 66

1. Once rail repair in West Ukraine no longer absorbs all the construction of AGA move the HQ to the Caucasus

2 AGB HQ should be moved to closer to its units, ideally when empty (or emptied) of SUs
2a: This is to allow reassignment of SU's back into Armies rather than wait for the SU to cycle to OKH.

3. III/JR 14 Fin. Infantry Battalion should be used as much as possible - this is the last turn it can be used before it withdraws, they should not be left to go quietly back to their families for this war!

4. VIII HQ needs to be moved to where rest of 9th army controls.

5. Reassign some units on the Oka to 4th Rumanian army.

6. Need to move at least 2 Rumanian unit back to garrisons to release the Hungarians in garrisons back to the front. Need to move at least 3 Rumanian units back to garrisons to release the Italians in garrisons back to the front. Need to move at least 4 Rumanian units back to garrisons to release 1LW regt, 2LW regt, 3LW regt and Moscow LW regt in garrisons back to the front - as they withdraw soon we want their ToE down to 75%.

7. Move some battered 6th army units North. Put them all into XXIX (von Obstfelder) HQ and make that an independent HQ for the north. 6th army has 4 corps HQs currently. We want to move the leader out of a priority corps and into a less important static area HQ and this will save points doing it.

8. North static areas to be reviewed to check every hex has a minimum cv/hexside (e.g. 9)

9. Assign any remaining SUs in 2nd Hungarian army/ 3rd or 4th Rumanian to any corps HQ on rails.

10. Make sure Air HQs have flak (especially FKVIII)

11. Reassign Rumanian Guards division to a German HQ - it has better morale and cv than many German units so should be considered alongside them?

12. Swap bad Rumanian units like 35 Reserve Rum division with good Rumanian units - 35 Reserve Rum should be in garrisons not others.

13. The 27th Panzer divisions arrived this turn and needs to be railed to frontlines - it can be moved one hex by rail at the start to make sure it does not miss out on rail cap. Keep it loaded so that it can carry on being railed next turn without needing to load again. Remember to not rail it towards the rail network still being repaired!

14. Must take and hold the area that will be rail repaired next turn by FBD2 to maximise rail repair

15. By manual swaps no more than 19 F4s left in pool from end of turn 67 onward. As F4 airgroups get small leave one on autoswap to G2 with its old F4 air frames redistributed to other F4 airgroups during logistics.

16. Deassign SUs from 3rd Finn Fort and switch from refit to ready mode

17. Switch full fighter air groups that swapped to FW190 to 109F4

18. Replace Lanz as corps commander

19. Rail 27Pz arrival - but chokes ToE to 20% until following turn

20. Gather the rest of the Allied Cav units for redeployment to the Caucasus.
20a: Shortening the lines should release more units to move south.

Question that still remains is:

Lucas, Kubrick or Riefenstahl?

Turn 32760 Panzers get latest upgrade model

The Reich enters Empire mode. I was wondering when Luke Skywalker entered the 8MP saga.

Lucas, Kubrick or Riefenstahl?

Last I hear they directed a Michael Jackson video? It is only now that I realise Star Wars were the 8MP sequels - not good enough for Telenovela channel I hear.

Those AT Walkers are sitting ducks for Soviet AT guns, even the 37mm. The Empire never learned the value of a low profile.

Worth a reminder of our own 8MP Downfall parody

Click on the photo below to link to the video - you should see the subtitles in English. If not you do need to switch them on to know what they are "really" saying.

It's even funnier now.
Hitler should've said, "Appeal directly to Gary Grigsby! Get him to decrease the Soviet manpower pool and increase Wehrmacht base morale."

The 2by3+ Team Game is near the end now. But do you mean with an AAR? Crackaces did one for the Summer 1941 turns for Axis and there is a Soviet one for the early turns. I was thinking of posting some screenshots just to show what happened - but was not sure if there was any interest.

I was keen to write out the 2by3+ AAR at one time. Beria is encouraging me to do it jointly with them so I write out the Axis side and the Soviet side is written out by them. I probably would not go into all the team dynamics discussions we had here in 8MP. On the other hand we do have a huge cloud storage of all the screenshots taken at the time which are still useable. So I suppose we could start and see what interest there is?

When the 9PM/10PM team game was posted in the opponents wanted section here it became more about people who had left team games or never been in them wanting to stop it starting. So there is apprehension on anything from these forums unfortunately. One team game has started from players in Discord and it is looking like a lot of fun there.

EDIT: OK I have been persuaded - I will write out the 2by3+ Team Game AAR as well. As 2by3+ started out as the child of the 8MP Team Game it is fitting we should end one with a link to the next one.

To read the AAR of the 2by3+ Team Game click http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=4340647

As well as being the longest AAR, this is now the fourth most read! Given this game finished under v1.11.03 and the other three were on the early versions when it was just new I would say that is an achievement!

Is there still 8 MP games going on?

Its kind of confusing to me on if there is and how it all works.
