I've undergone the same process after finishing my game with Fabertong. I didn't pick up another, I'm about to wrap up my slow-moving game with Obvert, and I plan to take a similar sabbatical from AE.

Hey, after you stand down sufficiently to recover, please consider another match with Obvert. It would be fun to see a more traditional game, that doesn't veer into Oz so early, and see how you manage against him. He's a great player, so how might your fare under ordinary circumstances.

Good luck in everything.

May 5, 1943

About this time, Japan stages a LRCAP trap over Nagasaki, claiming 66 bombers. This prompted the Allies to finally stop their daytime raids and switch to night time bombing of Tokyo, Osaka and other important economic bases.

Over the last 3-4 days of the war this provided 6,000 or so strategic VP to the Allies. Japan used Petes, Nicks, Dinah Fighters as the primary night time fighter defense...along with AA, searchlights, radars, forts.

Epic game

Just a question, what art mod are you using? The map looks great

That's not an art mod. That's just the vanilla map. I prefer it, too.

This is the one I Meant Canoerebel

Wonder, of wonders, the KB makes Moppo dodging a few submarine attacks, while the Indiana is nowhere to be found...and at dawn, the KB turns into the wind and launches a strike from their depleted decks. Offense is still prioritized -- a scant 10% of fighters are on CAP (but all the Rufe).

First strike to the IJN this morning! Poor Hornet! Weather and distance play havoc with coordination.

Oh. (Doesn't the vanilla look better? It does to me. Vanilla with hexsides turned off is my favorite way to view the game.)

P.S. Sorry for hijacking instead of helping.

If memory serves it is the extended map variant. I am almost 100% sure there exist versions for stock.

Night bombing in 43 really has no hard counter for Japan. You can maybe bombard the runways the beasts come from, maybe. Usually bombing the bases is a no go with Allied AA hindering you or distance.

8 raids on Osaka this night, with the 6th raid pictured below.

Night Air attack on Osaka/Kyoto , at 109,59

Weather in hex: Partial cloud

Raid detected at 30 NM, estimated altitude 14,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 10 minutes

Japanese aircraft
E8N2 Dave x 3
J1N1-S Irving x 2
Ki-45 KAIa Nick x 2

Allied aircraft
DB-3M x 4

No Japanese losses

No Allied losses

Manpower hits 2
Fires 9825

Aircraft Attacking:
4 x DB-3M bombing from 10000 feet
City Attack: 10 x 100 kg GP Bomb

CAP engaged:
Tateyama Ku T-2/C with E8N2 Dave (1 airborne, 0 on standby, 2 scrambling)
1 plane(s) intercepting now.
Group patrol altitude is 5000 , scrambling fighters to 15000.
Time for all group planes to reach interception is 49 minutes
32nd Sentai/A with Ki-45 KAIa Nick (1 airborne, 0 on standby, 1 scrambling)
1 plane(s) intercepting now.
Group patrol altitude is 8000 , scrambling fighters to 11000.
Time for all group planes to reach interception is 29 minutes
Endo Det with J1N1-S Irving (0 airborne, 0 on standby, 2 scrambling)
Group patrol altitude is 9000 , scrambling fighters to 10000.
Time for all group planes to reach interception is 47 minutes

Osaka is a huge industrial target, may be the easiest to strike effectively, and therefore may be the most important for both sides. With its huge general industries and Manpower numbers, a few fires do disproportionate damage. The return on investment can be huge. And if Japan can't blunt the strikes effectively, that would be crippling. Nagasaki is probably second.

The fire caused by burning a curse kimono:

quote:

The Great fire of Meireki (明暦の大火, Meireki no taika), also known as the Furisode Fire, destroyed 60–70% of the Japanese capital city of Edo (now Tokyo) on March 2, 1657,[1] the third year of the Meireki Imperial era. The fire lasted for three days, and is estimated to have claimed over 100,000 lives.

Only a 1/4 of the units took part in this battle to get some rested and bring disruption down from previous attacks. About 2k AV had just moved in and were still in reserve mode. The next day would have seen the attack of all units in hex. Defenders were strong, but I think it would have gotten at least a 1:1. Soviet units are so tough, even early.

The Marines here are also at about 97exp by this point, so they're actually the scariest. Indian IDs were really experienced as well, while the Soviet units across the board have very marginal commanders and gain experience slowly. Only some were above 70 in spite of constant combat.

Osaka is 2nd. Tokyo is still the most return on investment. Even a strike that sees a lot of hardship from NF and AA will do more damage because the manpower is so high there. Fires just burn for days and keep taking damage off. In the Allied game I'm playing I've found that I can bomb Tokyo for a day or two and then diversify targets to get them burning, then go back to Tokyo after five days and the fires have lasted that long, only just going out before I strike again.

My goal for Strat bombing in April 45 is 500VP damage a day on average.

In 43 the tools are much less effective but the defences are not in place yet. Japan has no NF and many less AA units, or worse quality before upgrades, than later in 44-45.

So once in range huge amounts of damage can be done by simply hitting a lot of targets daily with small strikes and keeping fires going.

These are my Strat bombing target priorities in order:

1. Tokyo
2. Osaka/Kyoto
3. Nagoya
4. Kobe
5 Nagasaki/Sasebo (lower because manpower is lower)
6. Fukuoka (high manpower)
7. Hiroshima/Kure (lower because defences are better with naval DP/AA guns in numbers)
8. Yokohama (lower also because naval AA/DP installations are huge and proximity to Tokyo means usually a CAP bleed)
9. Hamamatsu
10. Tsu
11. Shimonoseki
12. Okayama

Maebashi and Gifu are important targets, but aircraft/engine factories have to be targeted individually so return on investment for VP gain is less, while strategic impact may be high depending on type of planes made there. So airframe factories might determine specific target priorities as well.
