I started getting this recently with 1.77. In my case it was the Windows anti-virus saying saying the bacon distant worlds was a virus (did not even like the DW 1.79 archive and would extract all except exe) but I added an exclusion (task, and file) but still the same issue and now MS AV is not reporting any issues. On starting I get the first bacon mod 'ok" requester button, then the DW pop-up opens but it closes right when I would normally get the second Bacon mod "ok" requester. The stock distantworlds.exe does successfully open the game. I have not tried a clean install of the Mods Bacon-retreatUE-DasBlue...yet.

Thanks gabeeg! I added an exclusion and now instead of no error I do get an error.

Ok as a follow up: I did a clean install of Win 10 vers 2004 and I still only get the first pop up and in task manager I see this

lowIndependentLifeValue=1 seems to have two possible effects strangely dictated by whether or not it's my first galaxy generation after loading up the game. Roger told me about this setting in another thread and I noticed it initally didn't seem to work, as the galaxy generated all 20 independent colonies BUT with drastically decreased populations from the norm, only in the millions. However after backing out and trying it again, it worked and there were no colonies. I thought it was a fluke until I repeated this several times over the last couple of days with the exact same results while working on getting the right game settings.
Right. The BaconSettings values are not read until after Galaxy creation so any galaxy creation variables won't be used unless you go back to the main screen and re-roll your galaxy. You could also load a saved game to intialize the bacon settings and then go to galaxy creation. I did not know about the lowered populations though.

When I have the BaconWorld theme selected, and generate a galaxy "bacon" sized, aka 2000 stars, and then try to open pretty much any dialog box, the game crashes with an unhandled exception. If I lower the star count to one of the "officially supported" numbers, it seems to work just fine.

Interesting, alright. Good to know I may need to create a new game soon, will save some time not having to keep reloading the whole game.
Edit\\ After a couple days of playing the game I ran into an issue with unhandleds, freezing and unsuccessful saving. I can't pinpoint exactly what caused this, I thought it was a windows update. Though it ONLY happens with the RetreatUE/DasBlue/Bacon mod. Everything works fine with just Bacon World. I can't make heads or tails of why it worked fine and suddenly doesn't but I guess I'm gonna drop that and only play Bacon World.

Seems like I've been sucked back into playing again. Not quite like riding a bike.
Not sure if this was ever brought up but I would like the scientist "foreign spy" characteristic modified. It's like they wrote it on their application and we still hired them. It would be better if they had the characteristic but the wordings were erased so we'd never know. A taller order would be for a counter spy to uncover it.
i have the same problem as rjonasz has. Installed Windows 10 Version is also 2004. I tried to exclude the folder/exe from windows defender, but it does not help.

I'm sorry to hear some people are having trouble with the mod. I have Windows version 1909. I hope there is not something in the 2004 update that breaks something. mkemper31, please post the exception you are getting when you try to play on a 2000 star map. beAs, maybe you can coordinate with jonasz and see if you can find something your two systems have in common. Since you don't get an error message its much harder to fingure out what is going on. This mod has been quite stable for most of its 2 year history so it is surprising things like this are happening now.

RogerBacon.....
I saw a couple of people were having issues with your mod and I wanted to confirm that with Windows 2004 while Distant Worlds Universe works fine your mod however does not appear to work anymore.
To help you work out what is happening this is what I see in the Windows Event Logs
I am getting an error with the ntdll.dll file which is what rjonasz reported a few weeks ago though his screenshot showed it with file svchost.exe and I have it happening on your modded DistantWorlds.exe
The unmodded DistantWorlds.exe works fine.
Running your mod as administrator it comes up with the messagebox saying Bacon mod by Rogerbacon. Click OK and it disappears Task Manager shows your mod is not running.
Three error messages received on your mod all referring to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ntdll.dll

With the install of Windows 2004 Microsoft created a backup of Windows in case it needed to be rolled back. I did a search of the file ntdll.dll and in the screenshot below you can see that the file ntdll.dll was updated by the Windows 2004 update
Windows.old\WINDOWS\System32 File Size 1954 KB Modified 30th April 2020
After the Windows 2004 Update

Of interest is this post I found from June 5, 2020 where explorer.exe was crashing due to similar issues
Posted June 5 · Original Poster Hello, I've been experiencing this issue with my HP Pavilion x360 (2016) running Windows 10 2004. Sometimes, when I'm working, Explorer.exe would just crash which would cause the taskbar to reset. I checked Event Viewer, and found the following:
Yesterday i played a little bit with some Windows Defender and app settings, but nothing changed it. I got it in more then hundred tries two times to run, but it was not reproducible.
There are two different start processes: 1. First Bacon Mod Info window appear and you press ok. In Taskmanger Distantworlds.exe appears shortly and crash. After that you can see the error message with ntdll.dll in eventlog. 2. First Bacon Mod Info window appear and you press ok. Distantworlds.exe appear and cpu usage growth, but it do not crash and nothing can be seen in eventlog.

In addition to what was said here, sometimes when Baconmod does nothing it doesn't crash and if you start it a few times you will see 3 or 4 instances of the mod running in task manager..... depending how many times you click the icon. Not sure why this happens but most time the mod crashes completely and is not seen in task manager.I tried running from desktop icon, from the file folder and also from within Steam and in neither case did the mod get further than your messagebox about Baconmod. Whatever is happening is occouring after the message box appears and the user presses ok.

Wow, thanks Microsoft. Distressing. Can someone try replacing the new ntdll.dll with the old one and see if that makes it work? Back up first of course. According to rjord1 it should be located in Windows.old\WINDOWS\System32.

I use a fresh installation of 2004 and this dll is used by so many Microsoft internal services that it would not be a good idea to change it.

Not as a permanent fix. I was just wondering if someone could make a temporary change so we could confirm that this is the actual problem. I'd do it but I don't have the 2005 update. If someone posts the new ntdll.dll I'll do it myself.

I tried installing bacon mod after you advised me to do so to make my custom background image work and I'm having the exact same problem. Also on version 2004...

For anyone on Windows version 2004 the general warning with the ntdll.dll file is as follows:
"You should never delete your ntdll.dll file, as it's an integral part of your Windows operating system and is called by many programs and processes. If your ntdll.dll file becomes damaged or corrupted it's possible your operating system will freeze, become unstable and completely stop working."
I am assuming replacing it with an older version of the file could also cause issues where Windows 10 could stop working properly.

I'm running Windows 10 Pro. My computer did an update a few nights ago but is still at version 1909.
I tried replacing my ntdll.dll file with the one a few posts up, just to see if it would prevent teh mod from running but, since the file is in use by Windows, I couldn't find a way to replace it. I will keep researching and see if I can find a solution.
[Edit]. I just did a Windows update. It grabbed the latest and installed it but it still says I have build 1909 (And BaconMod still works). How did you guys get 2004. Is it a beta or something?
