You are more than welcome to catch the readers up to turn 8 if you like. I'm finished with my memoir.

I can see by recon that you are pretty much "all in" in the north. So please catch the readers up on yours if you desire to continue with the AAR. By all means you don't have to.

Thanks for explaining your tactics here, good out of the box approach. The psychological warfare idea with the arrows is excellent
A few questions:
1) What do you do with the two FBDs in the Center after you leave the baltic rail zone? Do they head either for Velikie or Smolensk to repair with max speed or do you split them up so you can do both with a little less speed?
2) For a considerable time you depend on one rail connection to supply AGN and AGC. Later there is only one line which supplies AGC because there no southern one through Brest. Did this ever cause problems with Partisans?
3) As there is no southern rail line in AGC, doesn't become closing the Prpyat Swamps and linking up with AGC become a problem? It should be hard to create a rail loop with AGS before blizzard?

1. Normally I split at the intersection in the swamp NW of Vitsebek. By turn 8 the 3 FBD's are in or next to the following cities; Pskov, Velikie Luki, and Vitebsk. If there are still a lot of Soviets near Rzhev I may double team the track through Velikie Luki for that extra hex converted because of swamp then turn back south with that FBD.

2. The rail lines can be linked up pretty quickly (highlighted in yellow on the slide) if you put some construction workers in the RHG HQ's. You then strategically place them on the map so they will convert those hexes. You can also move the Army HQ's closer to the front and they will also start to convert those hexes. But to be honest I never had a partisan attack in the north since I always have the required garrisons. Unless I absolutely had to have that unit.

3. My Southern rail will link up with the FBD going through Smolensk South. Should be right before winter hits, lol :) Again the South isnt my priority and the FBD in the south just goes to Poltava-Kharkov North to link up with the Smolensk FBD. Of course the course of the war in the South dictates where also so I keep an open mind down here and plan accordingly.

I hope this helps.

In all of these games has anyone tried just abandoning the south very early on to concentrate on defending Moscow/Leningrad? Just using all of the rail capacity to move units to where they are needed in the North and leaving the industry in the South to its fate. Or do you think that would just be a defeatist move - perhaps avoiding a 10 turn blowout but guaranteeing defeat in 42 or at least stalemate from 43 onwards with the Russians holding out in a corner of the map but the Germans winning a big victory on points?

Excellent questions :)

I had no one totally abandon the south. I can't speak of my current game with Stelteck but I would venture to say he has some from the south from the Recon. I say this because I know what happened in a previous turn and not being privy to his AAR I don't know where he is in turns to say more.

The Soviet needs to both get units North and rail out industry for the long game. It is a knife edge you must walk and you "must" know how much you need and where to take it from. It can be done but boy it will make you want to kick the cat(or dog if you love cats and vice versa) when playing a good German.

It is just my notes on my game and happy to share with anyone that wants to use them. They aren't that much.

I could almost bet you any amount of money no one saw the arrow ;-P I had some pretty big ones in some of the games

It's quite a popular strategy especially with the stronger Soviet players.
Personally I like to make them fight for the South if possible whilst accepting the inevetable loss of Leningrad that usually entails. If Moscow was threatened though I'd strip the South in a flash and leave it to it's fate.

Lol at the recon pshyc ops. That would probably put me off my stroke because I'd think "There's no way he's going where the arrow is pointing" :) The good old double bluff.

ALSO, to defend against an opening Moscow thrust turn 1 the Soviet "must" defend the area NW of Vitsbek. That area is so key to a defense of Moscow it is worth the units losses. I would put all of my Airborne in there to be honest. Those little buggers don't route easy!!!!!! Heck, they never route! Also garrison Velikie Luki, it is a must along with the clear hex below it.

If they can hold out to turn 6+ it will hold up rail conversion too, btw :)

You would certainly not get away with such a psy ops playing me, Hardluck.

I would instantly gahter all remaining Soviet recons in one area and respond by drawing a "smily face".

Just to teach you a lesson, that is...

I would have such a happy day I would resign from said game Dinglir :)

P.S. Against my best friend playing Hotseat at his house back in 2011 I actually did a smiley face over his surrounded units. You should have seen his reaction. But I wouldnt do that against someone I dont know. Would be really bad form. Arrows are just fine ;-}

Germans don't get many planes shot down. Why? Because the Soviets have good alcohol & some of the women are just freaking "beautiful". Why look up to shoot a German plane when you have them both, Alcohol and a Lady?

Please realize that both of these games still had "huge" pockets full of troops surrounded. Thus the effective Soviet Armys are even smaller than what is actually on those slides.

Looking at the map you don't need to move anything out of Leningrad for a long time as the north is never under any real pressure.

You have 42 units south of the marsh you do not need that can go to the center.
Industry in the south, you do not need anything west of the Dnepr. So that gives you more then enough time to clear Moscow 1st,
then the south long before Stalino is under pressure. Just checker board the south, leave 3 hexes between German forward units and start of 4 deep checker board. Infantry never really come in contact with front forces tanks to do all the work.

That will make sure industry is not going to be your down fall, but you still have to find a way to hold Moscow.

The recon picture adds a personal touch to your game HardLuckYet Again.

Nice AAR and over all game, congrats.

It has been four days since I posted this. I'm assuming Stelteck caught people up on the turns on his AAR and I will post a few Screenshots of 2nd PZ group up to the current turn. In all my games I was able to capture a pocket at Pskov since the Soviet would pull some units from here to reinforce the other sector that was just attacked. My workhorse PZ group the 2nd. The "G" man group if you will since their icon is a large G (at least in English it looks like a "G"). The prior turn 2nd Panzer had set up in the woods below Pskov. They are roaring and ready to go since my FBD needs to go through Pskov. (My truck situation and Admin Points all doing well) This pocket "has" to fall on turn 7 to keep the rail lines going forward.

Turn 7 I had to use 2nd PZ to eliminate the pocket. It just had to be done that way to keep the rail moving forward :( The rail line is clear for conversion the next few turns.
