Larry has had some family issues to take care of, so he won't be able to do his AAR, not for a while, anyways.

I got out of the hospital two weeks ago and my heart is almost as good as new. I'm
as healthy as "a horse" and feel great. I've been keeping track of my blood pressure
and the highest reading was 126 over 95 so I guess I'll live for a great while yet. The
blood pressure medicine is supposed to lower my blood pressure but it makes me
see double and I get light headed when I stand up so I don't think I need it. Can't play
TOAW when you see double. WELL, you CAN but it's not as much fun. Long story
made short: I'm back.

I've been putting together a package to give to Tamas eventually documenting my D21 game. I haven't been posting in
the development forum because I've been taking a vacation of sorts here lately. The total package is over 540 Megs big so far
and I'm only on T62. I'll convert and post the whole thing eventually.

I posted this on the development board and then thought maybe some of you guys might like
to read it too:

Let me make a short story long: Wednesday two weeks ago I got a ride into the VA Hospital's ER
because something was growing on the back of my right ear, like a cancer spot or something and
I had spent two weeks trying to get an appointment to get somebody to take a look at it and
finally one of the nurses answering the phone told me to present myself at the ER early in the
morning. So I walk into the ER and the check-in nurse asked me what my complaint was. I had
had ( yes, two had's ) a good look at the waiting room and it was significantly past half-full and
I was up to here waiting for somebody to just take a look at my ear so I thought I'd fight back.
I told her that I had had a chest pain but that it was gone now. Which is true. About a year and
a half ago I walked out in the Tucson heat to check the mail and had a momentary chest twinge. I
said this hoping that I would be "seen" faster. No sooner than I got sat down after check-in they
were calling my name so I was escorted to a smaller waiting room and she started to take my vitals and
was asking questions about three per minute and I never got a chance to tell her I just wanted
somebody to take a look at the back of my right ear. And when she got her EKG equipment hooked up
she paused a minute and told me to sit still, she'd be right back. She strided purposefully out the
door and was back 3 seconds later with a doctor in training ( which is what most of the VA doctors
are ) and he took a look at the tracing and decided something and nodded at the nurse and left. She
said that they wanted to keep me overnight, hooked to the EKG machine and hold still I'll get you a
hospital gown. My house is usually about 78 or 79 degrees, ambient, just because I'm an old geezer
and like it a little warm. Well, the hospital room was in the 60's so she brought me two blankets,
one for just the feet and one for top cover and I eventually discovered that the best way to get
warm is to pull the covers over your head and wrap your arms around your legs in a fetal position.
I was determined to catch up on all the sleep I'd been missing. With various interruptions for taking
vitals or re-spotting one of the terminals that had come loose on my chest the night passed
uneventfully.

The next day, after breakfast they gave me a nuclear heart test, took some MRI pictures
and then about lunch-time a doctor appeared in my door-way with the diagnosis that it was an episode
of "atypical ischimea" and that it was gone now and I'm as healthy as a horse and feel free to go
home when you're ready. He proscribed a blood pressure medicine, a tiny little white pill, twice a
day as a precaution. I haven't taken but one and that one made me see double and get lightheaded
when I stand up so I decided not to take it any more. Damn doctors.

The thing is, Larry, you've been AWOL for way more than two weeks. If that's all you've got, I'm afraid the MPs are going to haul you off to the brig.

About 6 months ago I agreed to play the Jap side in a game of WITP-AE and we're into Feb. of '42
already. Too early to tell who's winning. And while I'm waiting on moves I'm the Axis side of a game
against the AI in TOAW's scenario D21. I'm on T62 and the Axis has reached the apex of it's
advance.....almost to the surburbs of Moscow. And the Soviets have been fighting back fiercely. They
have been given the strategic bias of Berserk I think. Lots of evaporating units when attacking the
Axis lines. I credit the Axis arty to being able to hold back the hordes. As it is they are each
turn punching a new hole in the lines and the whole thing is about to collapse. We're into Jan. of '42.

I've been documenting the whole thing as html pages and I'm thinking of posting it as an AAR in the
development board so that marketing can have a look at it. Maybe move it to the public board eventually.

What'd'ya think?

The on-call nurse finally called me and said that they earliest they could get me in would be in September
and did I want to just go to a civilian doctor and let the VA pay for it? I said yeah, sure, that works for me.
And she said she would get the VA's civilian dermatologist contractor to give me a call within the next two weeks.
That was day before yesterday. I'll be really surprised if any body calls.

Hey you guys........an update: The TriWest representative called me and said July 12 would be open at
13:00 and did I want an appointment then. So I'm going to get a ride into the Doctor's office and finally
get my ear looked at. I'll keep you guys in the loop.

The nurse from Dr. Bennett's office just called me. She said that the biopsy on the
thing growing on my right ear was not cancerous. What you call "Bee Nine". So I'm
in the clear. Just so you know.

Very good to hear (especially after hearing way too much of the opposite around me lately) - "benign" is the term you are aiming for in these cases and its a very good reason to be happy and thankful!

Feel your pain, Larry - Just got out of the hospital myself - seems some bug got to my leg, infected it, and spent considerable time fighting it off. Must have fumbled a save roll, or something...

I was fine until they had to de-breed it - I really, REALLY, have empathy for burn patients now...

Larry's experiences with the VA pretty well track those of mine and my friends.

Any of you who are naive enough to think that single-payer health care is a good idea should ask a veteran or a Native American about how government health care has worked out for them. Their answers will horrify you. Government-run health care is worse than the worse thing that you can imagine.
