Scott did not bomb this turn but sent a smaller sweep in. So, I had a turn to rest my fighters and repair some. I've flown in replacement squadrons but I can't keep up those losses if stays at 3-1 (or even 2-1). On the other hand, after Palembang there are no real targets that need defending until we get to the HI so the airforce may go into hibernation for awhile.

My carriers are north of Sumatra and the brits are just sailing aimlessly back and forth. I get the feeling that they're bait but if he wants to put ships out there to be sunk I might as well give it a go, especially since I don't like leaving the CVS in Singapore where they are sitting ducks. Scott's CVs appear to be off of Batavia. He's either screening his own navy down there or preparing a dash near Singapore. We shall see.

Increase the production of your fighters then. His are superior but also finite, and it is totally possible to exhaust his pools. You can even calculate the number of each fighter he has in the pools - a luxury that Allies do not have (well, give/take FOW but still)
Not to mention pilot losses

GetAssista, the air production is being duly cranked up. 3-1 losses will have Scott whittling away at my lead so let's hope the last air battle was just an anomaly!

Another quiet turn, but some sort of move is in the offing. As you can see, many many many American CVs are just south of Singapore. I'm not sure if Scott is trying to lure me out or preparing for some huge air smash at Palembang or Singapore. I've got about 150 fighters on CAP at each base.

Just in case Scott heads north, I've got a two BB TF heading 5 hexes south and, let's hope, turning around and heading back to Singapore (see the arrow on the map). The Musashi is in there so it could be a whale of a surface battle I've also sent an infantry brigade to Palembang that looks like it will make it and start unloading this turn. If Scott does shut the oil down I've got about 130,000 fuel in Singapore and, hopefully, some of that can make it to the HI. It depends on what Scott does with his CVs.

Meanwhile, the KB is up north of Sumatra. Scott has these TFs sailing back and forth that must be bait trying to lure me away because they never seem to do anything. I'm not sure he has spotted the KB and there are reports of a CVE and BBs in at least one of the TFs. Since I don't really want the KB down at Singapore right now this may be a good place for them. Of course, the risk is that they get trapped in the straits of Malacca but I don't think Scott can take out Singapore right now so I should be able to edge by if I need to. I just wonder if his ships are going to scatter or if I can catch them with the KB.

Also, B-29s made their first appearance. I think they're flying out of Sri Lanka (aka Ceylon) and they hit Medan in a night raid killing one oil point. No problems there as far as I'm concerned. I put some zeros at that base to at least screw up their aim if I can.

And, in Burma, I'm juggling forces to do a small counter attack. In the circled base hex Scott has one division and a brigade. He stopped bombing me about a week ago after I moved my flak in and shot down 5-B-25s. I figure I can get two more Japanese infantry and one Japanese tank division into there which would give me about 4-1 superiority. It's worth a shot and I'll still have my two divisions in Moulmein if he tries an end run. Busting up that division would be a nice addition to my VP. Also, Scott has not been very aggressive in Burma. He has not advanced into Lashio or Mitykania (sp?) even though I'm only defending them with base forces. I wonder if supply problems are holding him back.

You know, this is a very fun game except when a glitch seems to happen over and over. This turn I had Scott in a perfect carrier ambush. I'm two hexes away from a TF made up of his escort carriers. I have 8 carriers in two CV TFs, my two best carrier TF commanders, no indication of bad weather, my carriers are not overcrowded, they have their assigned squadrons, I did not flank speed into position, the squadrons are set to naval attack with a range of at least 7 hexes. And nothing, not a single plane attacks in the am or pm turn. Scott did not attack (in case you're curious) because his CVEs have fighters and planes set to search and that's it.

This has happened to me several times in this game. It never happened to me as the allies in three campaign games and it has not happened to Scott in this game.

It really sucks a lot of the fun out of it when something frustrating happens over and over and there is no explanation.

Air war was fine. I took more losses but shot down a lot of P-47s. Does it really matter if the game won't let my CVs operate?

I am Allied in my game and it has happened to me already twice by Jun 42. I had set up Japanese TFs for a carrier ambush and on two separate occasions my planes never flew. I stopped trying to figure out what else I could do because like you the weather wasn't bad and everything was set for naval attack within range and I had good commanders, as good as I could, but yet nothing. Call it a quirk of war, remember the Japanese search plane that didn't launch on time and allowed the Americans to hit the Japanese carriers before they could rearm and launch their own strike?

What was the weather like at the target hex? If it was bad there, your aircraft may not fly especially if the enemy TFs had a low DL. Maybe the best thing to do would be to set up some small DD TFs to make quick torpedo attacks and then retreat.

Never depend upon the float planes for spotting. It is best to use aircraft from the carriers.

That's why I still have some Vindicators they have a range of 10 with drop tanks to do searching from some of my carriers.

You can't know what the weather was throughout the turn in any given hex. Alfred has confirmed that the weather varies randomly in each hex during the turn. You can see this when you have morning and afternoon air strikes at the same target and most times the weather will differ between morning and afternoon phases. When no combat takes place you do not get any means of knowing the weather in the hex at the time the strike was ready.

At the Battle of Coral Sea CV Zuikaku got pounded while CV Shokaku hid in a heavy rainstorm nearby. I think the game designers were trying to capture that kind of variability.

What is worse is when you have 6 CVs against the lone Enterprise TF with LBA support. Even with the magazine flooded plus an ammo storage explosion, the Vals and Kates will attack other vessels in the hex before the CV is sunk. Plus, a bunch of Vals and Kates go off on their own and attack a transport TF. Why not concentrate on the CV until it is a reef? So the Enterprise still lives with 3 bomb hits and two torpedo hits.

John B I am going to blame you when I end up buying this game ;-P You are always lurking in the WITE forum and I have been checking you out over here. Interesting game so far and I am this close >< to buying this darn game :-) Good luck and I will be keeping an eye on you.

It actually makes me feel better to see that this happens to the allies sometimes. Thanks for all of the comments! @ Ranger Joe, I feel your pain, when carriers are on the line sinking AKs is rather pointless.

@ HLYA, thanks for the good thoughts! You're where I am. I keep thinking of delving into WITE but I can't find the time to devote to it.

As you area all about to discover, the next turn was vastly different than that last.

This turn is really a tale of the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. The Good? The CVE Battler ran into my ASW TF and, two ammo explosions and 6 torpedo hits later went down with its aircraft component.

The Bad? Scott finally sent the bombers after Palembang and the airfield is almost out of action.

Heavy losses in the air. I did not get too many bombers, just 4 PBY Liberators and 1 B-24J. A fair number of Corsairs. But, most of my squadrons were demoralized by the heavy bombing. I've flow in the fresh squadrons from Singapore but I fear another turn of heavy losses since the airfield is in such bad shape. Still, since Palembang is the last major oil source it's worth it to try to defend it for as long as possible (or at least that's what I tell myself).

The Ugly?

Here is the KB on its second day northwest of Sumatra. I figured Scott would head north and south after he saw my carrier TF so I decided to see if I could catch the northern group since by heading south I could be heading into his CV TFs.

The following will be the morning airstrikes because this time the CVs decided to launch their planes. Warning, what you are about to see is not for those of a sensitive disposition.

That was it for the morning. But, I guess my flyboys were ashamed of not launching last turn because they put in a full day's work. First PM airstrike.
