When starting campaigns, I have had formations lose a couple of units because the weapons that belonged in one or more slots were not available at the time; mostly company HMGs, ATGs, or such like. Having lost them, though, there is no way to acquire those weapons later when they become available; the slot is gone. Is there any way to put a space holder in those slots so the unit can be filled later?

Nope, but you don;t pay for them and can buy "seperate" units to act as place holders. THere is no rarity effect in teh upgrades...your reputation for battlefield excellence gets you what ever weps are available :D
