Just wondering experienced players' opinion on French surrender versus being conquered and having Vichy set up. Allot probably depends on the location of the French fleet....?

I think France should always surrender, if they can. It is the antidote to the Germans fooling around on the Spanish border (or elsewhere) before creating Vichy. If the French are holding in the Toulouse area, then wait, but otherwise it is a far superior option for the Allies. The CW and French can work around the cooperation issues until France is liberated. (errh, that is, once MWiF does the cooperation stuff correctly when that occurs)

I would like to repeat a question I posted in another thread and I think I have seen in this forum in the past... (it's not easy to search for past threads info in Matrix forums, at least for me), what are the pros and cons for the GE player to Vichy or go to the surrender of France?

The most important Pro is the halved US entry effect and the fact that they don't have to collapse Vichy if they want to do a close the Med.

The most important con is the fact that the French fleet stays under control of the other side.

Thanks.

A hard decision. I always went for Vichy because of the force of costume but also because very few times I close the med (at least this way).

On one side, half the Vichy entry is very nice, but on the other, the CW can do an excellent use of all those BB, cruisers, Trs, conv, ...

OMG I think I still prefer Vichy.

Thanks - yeah I was puzzled about the CW/ French cooperation.... but not critical.

In my limited experience it seems a French surrender is better for Allies because of the fleet. Axis should try and create Vichy, which they can always collapse. Axis can get some resources in Spain and Portugal and fiddle around Gibraltar but Free France gets most of the fleet it seems.

In current GW game Germany steamrolled into Paris before France could surrender so Vichy it is....

I meant to say "if France surrenders axis can get resources in Spain ...etc. " If Axis go that way ... as noted before...

Well yes, although you already had one:

Spain
While Paris is Axis controlled, a neutral Spain must supply Germany with 1 resource a turn.

I usually play France and never, never in many games I surrendered. You must defend France with intelligence and never let germans capture Lyons or Toulouse. This is my counsel, don´t obsess defending Paris or trying to recapture it, never attack with bad odds, never let the italians free advances in the south, stand the maginot line until the near end and try to built a defense line in the Seine or in Vichy. In my experience, German players use to choose Vichy to minimise losses. The french fleet is cool but never results a decisive thing to achieve the victory. If you play good and get a little luck, free french keep cruisers, transport and subs, a few battleships are worthless.

Yes the whole discussion is based on Germany not declaring Vichy before the French can surrender. The sequence of play is such that Germany always has the choice first. It is right after this point each turn that the Allies must consider the possibility. If Germany is going all-out for a conquest that means Spain may be her ultimate target so then as long as the French can block access to the Pyrenees, then don't surrender.
