Greetings,

A new scenario against ZuluHour this time, and not the full campaign. This is a short campaign regarding the defense of Singapore and the DEI. No "Sir Robin" here. I'm committed to the fight. Maybe if anything, I'll learn more about this theatre and can apply it to the next full campaign.

I'm not quite sure where the scenario is sourced from if from the Babes mix or what. This one starts on 1/1/1942.

This uses a subset of the map. It runs from the far east edge to Ndeni. North and south, it goes from mid-Australia to the extreme southern Chinese coast. Everything from Singapore to maybe Rabaul/Port Moresby and Darwin could be involved.

In the Philippines, the US is reduced to just Bataan, with a 7 strong PBY squadron and two P-40 Squadrons with 4-5 planes each. PoW and Repulse are long dead, of course.

No new ships or air groups will arrive. I gots what I've gots.

There are troops loaded on ships at Diego Garcia and Cape Town. They're destined for Singapore, but I'm routing them to Oosthaven. Maybe I can put up a better fight for Palembang. The Japanese start with most of Malaya, with their leading troops about 4 hexes N or Singapore. Needless to say the reinforcements may pretty much be late for this.

For subs, I have 3 S boats at Bataan, now enroute for Soerabaja. At Darwin, I have 16 of the named USN subs. They're enroute to all the chokepoints at the northern part of the DEI. 3 are headed to surround Babeldaob. At Soerabaja, I have another 17, about 1/3 of which are the longer ranged USN subs. Some are covering Malaya, while the rest are assisting the USN subs. Two long range Dutch subs will cover Truk.

We'll see how this goes...

Meant to mention...

I'm getting all my warships sent to Madjene across the strait from Balikpapan. I should have a bunch when I'm ready. This is the trick I usually use to pounce on the invasion to Balikpapan. I'll probably send them in 2-3 groups this time, instead of one humongous force. I'm taking care with my search planes to try and cover all the usual routes in.

I'm still trying to get a grip on where my supplies are sourced from. Townsville seems to be one.

Some action picking up. Sweeps at Bataan and Tarakan. No fighters up at either. The ones at Bataan are shipping out -- one to Cagayan and one to Tarakan. I'll have some defense up next turn. Air support at my forward Dutch bases is very minimal.

Bombers caught ships at Tarakan. Shouldn't happen next turn.

This was really the first turn with any real action. Was fairly quiet up 'til now.

A slow minelayer just dumped her load at Mersing. I want to leave surprises around.

I was hoping my air would go after these ships, but they hit another group by that big peninsula right between Tarakan and Balikpapan. They got lost in the morning raid, and half of them made it in the afternoon. Typical results. I know not to depend on air here.

The 27th Australian Bde is loading up at Singapore. The xAP is too big to get to Palembang, so they'll unload at Oosthaven. Put up some kind of fight for Sumatra.

Surface forces and a CVL are killing transports escaping the Philippines.

Some missions flew south of Tarakan, but no results.

Troops are ashore at Rabaul. Zulu wasted no time here. In a big campaign, I might have tried to stuff it with more Australians, as they can flip to the Aus I Corps at a discount. No troops on Oz here, though. In theory, he could land on Australia proper in this scenario, and I wouldn't be able to stop him.

In the end, this scenario is a masochistic nightmare for the Allied player. Not a lot of fun from this end. He selected it, though and I'll do my best with it. As mentioned, maybe I can learn a few things for the next big campaign.

I see a single IJA unit in the hex W of Cagayan, moving inbound. Not sure how they got there. My 4 plane squadron of P-40Bs departed there for Tarakan, while the 3 B-17 squadrons went to Soerabaja. All arrived with no damage, so they can be useful.

A group of 2 Dutch CLs and 2 DDs arrived at Diego Garcia. Now enroute for Soerabaja. Hopefully they can arrive in time to defend Balikpapan.

A couple IJN TFs are cruising down the strait between Manado and Ternate. Not sure if they're invaders or just a sweep.

Ships are showing up and staying at Tarakan, including transports, so I'm guessing they'll be unloading soon. Don't know why they're taking so long. My B-10s hit them to zero effect.

In the stock game I think the 18th Division is already in transports at sea when the game starts so the Allied player has to decide whether to let them continue to Singers or send them to India, Burma or Oz.

Actually I send mine to Osthoven to go to Palembang and making him take 3-6 months to dislodge them and deny him oil resources, which the protracted fighting usually destroyers.

His ships left Tarakan, so I don't know what's the deal there. There was zero air activity this turn, so it went quickly.

At Rabaul, he's been content to bombard. I'm wondering if he brought enough troops for the job.

One of my Dutch subs (KXV) hits a Japanese tanker south of Davao, with guns, of course. On the other hand, he's running loose in the Java Sea, sinking a small xAP and hitting a tanker.

He finally takes Pontianak, driving my troops south. They're in the swamp heading south to Ketapang. Probably take all month to do it.

For a note, The Japanese do have one small foothold on Sumatra, at Bengkalis. Being in the middle of a swamp, he can't really break out from there.

I'm gathering up most of the Dutch to send to Palembang. A group at Medan, I'm sending up to Sabang.

I'm slowly evacuating the RAF from Singapore. The torpedo bombers are at an inland base S of Batavia. I've a big group of small transports at Singapore, pulling the rest of the Australians, along with some other select units for Palembang. I still have three convoys slowly unloading at Oosthaven. I can't grow that port without engineers, which seem to be an extreme rarity here. Palembang should be pretty formidable, by the time I'm done.

Looking in terms of a big campaign game, I'm not sure I could pack Sumatra like I can here. I usually like to fill Burma up with lots of troops early on and I'd probably have to give that up with a more forward DEI defense like this.

Dutch and British ships are trickling their way in to Soerabaja. With him taking his time near Borneo, I hope to have my secret base packed with them by that point.

B-17s hit Miri again, just damaging the port. I forgot to re-task them this turn. Do it next time.

Troops still unloading at Rabaul. For resources at Australia, I have one motorized brigade there, which I have to buy out. I don't know whether to move this group to Port Moresby or not. Either way, I have to wait for transports.

A four-ship cargo convoy is loading at Cape Town for Palembang. I'm trying to keep any supply going out of here. Not much on-map for supply sources.

I've noticed troops ashore at Iloilo, north of Cebu on the next island up. Not sure when they came in. One unit it looks like.

I've reviewed the leadership at my little trapdoor base across the strait from Balikpapan and found most of them wanting. I've put some serious badasses in charge of most of them, though options were limited with Dutch destroyers, and I had to settle for mediocre there. Some of my 4-stackers have some serious gorillas in charge. I expect results. Maybe I can get Willis Lee in charge when I form them up.

Another RN CA departs Cape Town for Soerabaja. One group of Dutch ships and another of British are enroute there now, from Diego Garcia.

I keep getting intel of units prepping for Suva, which isn't even on the map.

I killed an IJN sub off Soerabaja. I heard sinking sounds and confirmed this on the ship losses screen.

KXIII hit a transport near Singkawang, and left her burning. He's been hitting some of mine near Darwin, where he's got a sub parked. I'll need to drive that one away at some point. For now, I'm re-routing all convoys to approach Darwin from the east.

Fight's on at Iloilo. This may take awhile.

Fairly quiet everywhere else this turn.

All the fighters at Singapore are evacuated. I'll spread them out between Sumatra and Java. Base support for them is at a premium.

The 2/15th Punjab Battalion was one unit wiped out earlier. It looks like I can buy them back. I'll have them again in a month, and even better, they'll show up at Soerabaja.

The 1st Motor Brigade is the only Australian combat LCU east of Darwin. I'm shipping them off to Port Moresby.

Tarakan gets bombarded this turn.

Kurt's really cranking out the turns today.

Not much this turn, apart from some sub skirmishes. He's been attacking all the little craft at Singapore with his Netties, sinking about one per raid. Regular raids on Singapore and Bataan also. I've noticed flak claims about one plane per raid. Wonder if that'll add up.

He's been turning his attention to Palembang already, sending some sweeps and a raid over. I'm surprised I shot any bombers down with my Buffalos as they were training.

Check if any of the units at Subic Bay have radar. Most likely not, at this stage, and hitting small, fast moving ships from land is harder than hitting land from ships.

This is a modded scenario and I think the mod included not being able to combine regiments/brigades into divisions.
