Gary Grigsby’s War in the West, the most ambitious and detailed computer wargame on the Western Front of World War II ever made, has finally been released on Steam!

Join the fight and lead your troops to victory with this incredibly detailed simulation. Each squad and vehicle will be under your command, waiting for your orders, in a huge 36k hex map with a comprehensive new air game that will allow you to control the skies above the battleground.

While your troops bring chaos and destruction on the field, you will also have to make plans for the logistic side of the battle, including rail usage, depots, trucks, ports and realistic interdictions.

Improve your World War II experience with the expansion “Operation Torch”, that introduces 10 new challenging scenarios, including both historical and what-if operations like the "Battle for Tunisia", "Operation Dragoon" and "Breach of the Gothic Line".

So, are you ready to show what you got on the battlefield? Grab Gary Grigsby’s War in the West on Steam now!
Do you think you are not tough enough for this? Then watch the tutorials we just made for new players! They’ll guide you and teach you the core mechanics of the game.

Awesome!

Is it possible for people who've already purchased WitW in the past here on the Matrix site to redeem a Steam key for it as well, as was the case with War in the East?

This is fantastic. I just got my Steam key from the Slitherine site. I love having the game on Steam. (Also answering the question above.)

Absolutely, all existing customers get a Steam key for free. That applies to all our games. If you purchase them from us and they are also released (or later released) on Steam, you can get a free Steam key.

Regards,

- Erik

It's worth noting that in conjunction with the Steam release, War in the West is temporarily on sale in our store as well. You can get it for $49.99 instead of $79.99 for a limited time!

Regards,

Also, if you already own War in the West and get your free Steam Key, please post a review on Steam! It helps us reach out to the Steam audience and inform them of the quality of the game.

I notice for WitW there is no beta path like there is for WitE.
Was this an oversight and will it be added later or was this intentional?

I prefer to have the game on Steam since I don't have to mess with serial codes or keep up with the installation file. But I would like to keep up with the latest betas and WiTE on Steam lets me do that.
Can we get this with WitW?

There's currently no public Beta available but I'm sure a Beta channel will be offered at Steam once a public beta is released.

We expect the next public beta to go out late this month or early September. When it does, it will be available on Steam and through Matrix as usual.

A few of the Matrix/Slitherine games use serial codes that are identical to their Steam keys. I think this might be one of them.

thank you

However it didn't work.
First it said that I must register (but I already did when I first got the game).
Then when I entered the key, it said it was already used (true, see above).

Oh well, the only thing steam does is automatically update and I can always do that manually

Thanks anyway

Keep in mind Steam has "bundle" sales that stack with Matrix sales.

Just picked up both (WitW/Torch) on Steam as a bundle for $35.44. I'm thinking there will probably be a surge of new players because of that price.

Here's a question from a beginner. If it already has a discussion somewhere, I would appreciate a link.
Why would I want to play on Steam rather than my PC?
thanks,

Hi,

Steam is not really the question of "to play on Steam" versus "to play on my PC" - both play on your PC (Windows or Mac), Steam just adds another "layer" / client application which serves different purposes:

1. Steam started as a simple game store where you could buy digital versions of games (no way to get a CD or DVD from them)

2. Steam also acts as a DRM (digital rights management) system that ties a game to your (Steam) account, verifying your right to own/play the game. There is no way for you to give the game to another person or resell the game

3. Steam requires an online connection to download and install a game but it does NOT require you to be online every time you play (there is an offline mode but I think there is some online verification from time to time, but I'm not sure about this. I have NEVER run into any issues with this (but granted, I'm basically online all the time on all my devices)

Some advantages that Steam offer:

4. Many games these days are ONLY available on Steam, that, of course, does NOT apply to Matrix Games/Slitherine games

5. Steam automatically applies patches and updates (if you are online) to games and therefore making the whole install & upkeep process really a one-click affair

6. For many games, Steam offers "cloud" saves, meaning your save games are stored in the cloud. While this protects your save games from problems with your local PC, it also ...

7. ... is great if you game on more than one machine. You can install the Steam on many machines and you have access to your cloud saves on each machine.

8. Steam offers good to great saves on many games basic all the time (again, not so much a factor with Matrix Games/Slitherine)

9. Steam has it's own system/repository for modifications (mods) for many games (not Matrix Games/Slitherine, as far as I know), making it easy to select, install, and maintain mods for games

10. There are also a couple of other features, such as matchmaking for online/MP games, screenshot, streaming, chat functionality etc.

There are also issues with Steam:

10. Some people have reported issues with the technical side of Steam; I'm using it for years now and have A LOT of games on Steam and do all my gaming through Steam and never had any issues but then again, not all systems are alike

11. If Steam should go down/bankrupt, it's at least high questionable what would happen to your games, since you have no way of downloading complete installers or get CDs, if the system does not exist anymore, all the content may be gone, too - that's basically the issue with every cloud system today.

I think Matrix Games offers are great middle-ground: I buy all my games from them directly to support them (Steam takes a rather steep percentage of the sale price from the publisher) and they give you your own download AND a Steam key and you therefore have both options. I play all my Matrix Games games through Steam these days though (to the extend supported).
Steam itself is free, so you can give it a try

RealChuckB,
Thanks for the response. It was helpful. For me, it would be more valuable if the entire game was online and I could play from anywhere without having to install the game on a local machine, but, otherwise, I see no compelling reason for me to use. I am going to continue playing war in the west on Steam just to see if that changes my mind.

Hi Richard,

There are attempts at "game-streaming" services that would allow you to play on any machine (also more or less independent of its own CPU & GPU power) but it would require a VERY GOOD online connection and I have not seen anything that is compelling (Playstation is offering one for some of its games and it works ... ok but that's probably not the type of game you are looking for).

Take a look at Steam, I like it. It was a huge deal for me back in the day when games were still sold on CD/DVD, as it got away with that and replaced it with completely digital copies, which was great when you were traveling and/or hated the disk searching and swapping.
It was also great back when companies (including Matrix Games) didn't offer comprehensive patches but would require you to go through multiple patch installations to get to the most recent version.

If you play other (current) games, there is almost no way around Steam these days (Electronic Arts has a similar service, Origin, but it's only for their own games) and there is also "Good old Games" www.gog.com (which offers DRM-free games) but if you are mainly playing games from Matrix Games/Slitherine and similar strategy publishers, it's certainly not a "must have". As I said, 99% of my gaming is through Steam, so it's convenient for me, even for the Matrix Games games, but you might not get the same mileage out of it, if you have a different gaming-profile.
