Read a lot of AARs, YouTube playthroughs, kicked the AI's butt and now would like to try my hand at a flesh and blood opponent.

No experience with playing Soviets yet so I'll play Germans.

Whatever settings and house rules we agree, but I was thinking:
- FoW (also movement?)
- Lock HQ Support
- Non-random weather
- No reduced blizzard
- No Soviet attack +1
- No HQ BU? Too controversial?

Will stay the distance till a decisive outcome and would appreciate constructive feedback during the game. Could even do an AAR.

That would certainly be a radically different game, and I would be curious to see the AAR just for that. As playing the Axis that might put you at a big disadvantage - any opponent who takes you on might be happy to tilt other options in your favour because of that (e.g. reduced blizzard, no para drops etc.)

Just seems to me that HQ BU is still too powerful. And frankly making the already unrealistic logistics model even more unrealistic. Perhaps without it against a decent Soviet player is suicidal, but I think it's worth a try. What would be good concessions from the Soviet side?

I know for me it is very difficult to calibrate as I have never even imagined a game without HQBU. Your opponent might have better ideas.

Reduced blizzard is easy as it is a built in option. There a lot of other house rules like no para drops, no sea invasions etc that are mentioned in these threads - you could collect all the pro-German ones together but I suspect they would still not counterbalance it.

You could recalibrate the victory conditions. For instance you halve the needed victory points needed for Axis victories or say if you still control Berlin by the end of 1943 you win. Whether those are the right criteria is impossible to know.

If it is purely an issue of logistics why not just tackle it at source. You could have a house rule to keep panzer HQs 6 or more hexes away in 1941? Or be less extreme, say only one HQ buildup a turn or one every two turns?

In the Eight player multiplayer team game I am involved in ( http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=4245675 ) we have this house rule to tackle over powerful buildups

"No unit may deliberately move forward into isolated status (defined as being more than 99 MPs from a railhead). Units that are isolated due to being surrounded may only move towards supply. The only exception to this rule is air-landed units which may move in any way."

You could ask that it is for beginner players only? Even if you have a lot more experience against the AI this could make it a fair game by having the handicap?

I certainly find it interesting because it is a different take. And I am interested in games which try to take a new or different take on WitE. But because it is so different I would find it very hard to give good counterbalancing measures. Perhaps you might have to agree that the game you play is more an experiment/exploration of a concept rather than being a straight match with a winner or loser?

OK, 2 games started. One of them I'm thinking to do an AAR for as I'd like to try out this idea of not having HQ BU at all but some concessions from Soviet side then. Let's see.
