I believe this might be a panther screenshot...

Where is Clouseau?

Below the tank, of course.

I have played a lot to Steel Panthers but one day I have discovered something called Combat Mission.
Since then, I never came back or occasionally just to return again to 3D tactics.

Are you planning Steel Tigers to surpass Combat Mission?

In my opinion, Steel Panthers series already surpass Combat Mission series.

Steel strength is Matrix,
Combat weakness is Battlefront.

Steel Panthers was a nice game, but it hasn't been able to hold a candle to CM for many years, imho.

I respect your opinion but no other game was able to teach me the way to assault this single house without taking too much casualty. Combat mission was and is still the only game where I have a single objective: taking care of my mem assaulting various positions.

In your opinion, why Steel Panthers series is already surpassing Combat Mission series?

Cheers

IMO it will always be the ai and both have very weak ai's once you learn the exploits. For CM games running down the sides while presenting a feint to the front has always been my way of defeating every battle I play in CM. While they did get smart and started putting artillery on the sides; one artillery unit can't hold out vs an army. Just delayed me a little longer; didn't destroy the tactic.

For Steel Panthers it was exposed mortars or what you would call borg spotting that hurt that ai. Knowing the positions of mortars and onboard artillery made it rather easy as well but the infantry and tank battles were quite fun and challenging.

Oh, and while I'm at it a suggestion: Put more artillery and close mortars off board this time and have more planes available in Steel Tigers if possible. It's advantageous for the ai.

For Combat Mission give the ai 360 degree sight. I know that's not really realistic but it would make Combat Mission more challenging.

My main complaint about Combat Mission series is terrain and how it is presented. And camera & controls. This experience from CM2, and I haven't ever even installed CM3 (owned) because of that.

Steel Panthers' top-down hex map with clearly perceivable terrain & features makes the map very easy to understand at a glance without need to zoom the camera in to grass-root level to figure out line-of-sight. Game certainly has good number of stupid things going at it (speed of a unit based on moved distance, build up the speed by moving back & forth, then trigger enemy OpFire at high speed) and units can be micromanaged to good extent (OpFire range, target filters in WinSP games). But I have learned to deal with it since 1996.

I too don´t fancy to much CM´s camara! Personaly I just don´t like to be having to move the camara up and down the screen constantly, then get the tree´s out of the way and zoom down to see what hight terrain your on. It adds alot of wasteless gametime. Besides this issue, I like CM, but the camara thingy just makes me pick another game to play most of the time instead.

The absence of a kind of group "road column" move really killed my interest in CM. Having to plot each vehicle in a long road column w/o regard for what other vehicles ahead of it are doing is tedious and unrealistic. Quality of life issues like this make CM just too much work. A turn based game smooths out the very rough edges in a simultaneous real time sim.

You have just explained why the choice of battlefront to "a better graph" at the expense of the necessary improvements described above make me say that:
COMBAT MISSION WEAKNESS IS BATTLEFRONT.

I have certainly learned to workaround the inconvenients of CM time after time. The top-down hex map is just too far from the grass.

Well if you prefer the Combat Mission style then that is fine. However there are others who prefer the top down turn based strategy games on a hex grid. To each his own.

And no other game can ever surpass Steel Panthers. It is one of the great classics of all time!

I tried getting into the newer version of Combat Mission (my own experience was the tutorial for Normandy) and I just found it hard to grasp. Gorgeous game, but way too expensive for me. I LOVE Steel Panthers, but being of the group that likes nice shiny graphics it's hard for me to fire up that game.

There is truly nothing out there right now that's close to the scope of Steel Panthers. What other game (single game...no 2 or 3 expansions) and you fire up a quick battle of Italians vs Brits in North Africa? None.

I'm wavering about dumping $40 for the upgraded graphics version, but I just can't see spending that kind of cash on it, when there are free versions (worse graphics aside).

Does anyone know if Steel Tigers will have this scope? Will we be able to create any random battle with any nation involved in WW2?

Someone sell me on the $40 improved graphics of SP! :P

Tried getting the SpWaW version to run but it gliched out on me and I just gave up

It's not worth the $40 imho....sure the graphics are improved but not that much; not worth $40 much.

I just don't know of anything with the quality of the play of SP that let you play just about any nation vs any nation.

I'm still playing them both (on Vista64 OS) SP General's Edition and Winsp while I wait on Steel Tigers. If I live that long.

For some reason I can't create an account on the new SPWaW depot site. I downloaded the enhanced version and got DXWnd running and can run the game but it looks horrible. Graphics look worse than I'd image. Game is playable but it looks like it's worse than 800x600

Any ideas?

DxWnd might be set up to run in a Windowed Desktop mode. This means that the 800x600 image is stretched to match your Windows resolution which might be for example running at 1920 x 1080. This will result in a very bad image quality.

One way to fix this is to simply deselect the "Run in Window" checkbox in the Dxwnd option for SPWAW. You can do this by right clicking the SPWAW enty in Dxwnd and selecting "Modify" and from there look for the "Run in Window" option.

Another option is to leave the "Run in Window" option ON and use a filter to improve the image quality. The "Filter" can be chosen from the "DirectX" tab under Emulation. By default this is set to none. Using a filter to improve image quality takes a lot of CPU power so if you have a low end PC then you might have performance issues.

Hello people, as I have read here in the forum, which is to create a Steel Phanter successor, I immediately installed it again on my old PC 66 Pentium with Win 98se, to bring me ever in anticipation! That would make a dream come true, which I almost did not believe in. Years of great-looking real-time strategy games that put my vintage on the forefront of playing the sweat beads can easily do the best round-based WW 2 game "Steel Panthers", just not the water. Battle Accedemy and Codname Panzers have been making a living over the last few years. But should the Steel Tigers actually be implemented in the spirit of a Steel Panters .... Heaven ..... hopefully I will experience it! Is there any news about the release? Does it also come in a German translation? Are there any chance battles like in the past? Questions about questions! I would be happy about something! I stay here now on the ball and greetings from Germany to the forum.

Holger
