Is there any advantage to assigning an Admiral to command a TF over the Captains of the ships?

No. One of the games little foibles rank plays no part. It's the skills that matter.

As Chris noted, it does not mater what the rank is, find a IJN Lt with the same skill #s as Yamamoto and he'll preform as well as the great man himself. (btw, you won't find that unless you change it in the editor...just being illustrative here).

I think your question also goes to "if I have a separate commander for the TF, vs using one of the ships captains, do I gain an advantage"?

I believe the technical answer is "no". However, you will find a number of highly rated Admirals who you can only access as TF commanders. It pays to use them (wisely).

A follow on question is do the attributes of a TF commander contribute to combat in the same way as an individual ships captain. For that reference this post: http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=2350193

An additional comment following my comment above (sounding kind of Monty Python-ish...and now for something completely different...)

If you are looking for a "historical" player, one who plays in large part to simulate the war vs. a "game" player who looks for advantage based on how the game works regardless of historical realism, a question to ask is "how and why do you assign TF commanders". I consider myself a "historical" player. I assign a TF commander (or validate who was auto-assigned) for any TF of note; all CV, surface combat, specialty combat (e.g. ASW), amphibious. Convoys I don't worry too much about (as IJ worry more, especially later in war to dodge allied subs). Same with unit commanders. I never put a Captain in charge of a Brigade, don't care how good he is. Air Sqdns - MAJ or better (Fragments are fair game down to LT) Separate Bdes are LTC or better, Divisions are BG or better, Demi-Bdes (Divisions that have been divided) COL or better - ALWAYS

Sorry for the seemingly random rant...there were a number of recent threads on how to find the "right" opponent for specific play styles, seemed apropos. I'll go back to my wine now, you may return to watching the Penguin on the top of your telly.

I tend to behave the same way, historically minded for the larger or more important TF's and the senior commanders. How about the junior officers of regiments, battalions, fighter squadrons? The must have some point since we're able to change them.
