-I wake, and moonbeams play around my bed,-

Hi, I will be your JFB at this dinner theater. Tonight we have roast American with a side British stiff lip in a Dutch sauce.

I have never been good at AARs but here goes. If anyone wants any particular combat reports, maps etc let me know.

Spoilers ahead! No Wargmr since we have started the game.

So, ran my first turn. Forgot to set the supply level I wanted in the Japanese cities so most of my air factories did not expand. I am working on Ki43, 44 and 61 and A6m3 and m5m plus a lot on the Sam and George. In bombers I am putting quite a bit into P1Ys and Ki67s. I hate Ki48s and Ki51s with an unholy passion so I am putting a lot of work into Ki45 bombers. Not fighter-bombers. Also working on all of the J1N1s for recce and NFs. Gads the Japanese NF situation sucks.

So I have played as Japan 5 times in CHS WitP. I lost two and won three. I won taking India once, taking Noumea once and doing an early game full court press and taking Hawaii. In all three cases my Allied opponent quit though I felt all three games were winable.

I do not hit Mersing unless my opponent agrees with me ahead of time that anything goes, as I don't know Wargmr, we are playing a fairly historical first turn and a gentleman's game.

Largely, I just skipped the port near south west Borneo and Mindanao. Mindanao forces moved into Luzon. Borneo foces joined other SNLF to launch for Miri and Brunei.

I tend to use my subs aggressively and in large numbers so my I boats particularly will be strangling Pearl. I plan on taking British Borneo, northern Malaya and neutralizing Luzon at which time I will invade Celebes and Palembang. I have forces prepping for both.

For the long term I think I will do something I have never done; the Japanese pre-war plan. Most players here know that Japan taking 'more' just means they are weak(er) everywhere. More does not win against a good opponent. So I will take the Indies and Guam, ignore Wake. Take the Burma plain. I do not know if I want to bother with Rabaul. If you take Rabaul you need Buin, and Lae to protect Rabaul. If you take Buin you will probably need Guadl, and if you take Lae sure as **** you will need Port Moresby to not get slaughtered in the air. This is all a giant Japan commitment cascade. Open ended.

The problem is, if you leave New Guinea to the Allies a smart Allied player will wreck the eastern Indies. Joe Wilkerson did that to me in one of my losses. The best thing that could happen to a Japanese player would be for New Guinea to sink, but since we cannot count on that I am unsure what I wish to do bout it.

Anyway, I am planning a back hand blow against the Americans like the Japanese actually planned. Build strong local air units, a good force of subs attriting the American navy, and the Cruiser/Destroyer attacks at night and Kido Butai. I have never been a believer that Japan cannot win a war of attrition; you are not trying hard enough if you think that. One mistake all three of my losing opponents made was being goaded into attack me with carrier units in '42. All three lost multiple carriers and in all three cases I lost no carriers in '42.

So I do not know if I would call this a plan, but it's an idea at least.

Anyway, Pearl first day was fairly weak, California blew up but nothing else sank, though lots of hits. One midget sub driver gained the highest award Japan has for putting a torp into Pennsylvania. In a dry dock. Skipped it right in there. Tons of planes damaged but few destroyed. But I lost no Zeroes which was my goal.
I will come back for day 2 as if you pay the opportunity cost of the Pearl raid you better make it worthwhile.

PoW and Repulse were hit by 3 torps each but one against Repulse was a dud. I thought that both were going to live and I was cursing my pilots but in the ships sunk list there is California AND Repulse! Woot!

My Ki27s make me sad... 24 Ki27s intercept 5 Blenheim 1s... 1 Blenheim damaged. You suck Ki27.

More to come.

Don't expect much from a second Pearl strike. I just did one in my RHS game with Brian and sank A ship. Great. And lost a boat-load of planes.

If the goal was to not lose Zeros then why return for a 2nd day strike and risk losing Zeros for probably little return? Also Repulse hit by two torpoes is probably not sunk but might just be FoW listed on your sunk ship list.

My goal was not to lose Zeroes, my goal was to limit the number of Zeroes I lost. Again, opportunity costs. The fleet is in the East Pac for weeks now, not the Indies, this means it has to mean something. Pounding the Pearl base facilities will make it mean something.

Yeah, I am afraid Repulse didn't sink as well, but he is at sea so maybe my 100+ naval bombers can hit them again. Fingers crossed. Also subs crawling all over the straits.

I started my conversions this turn, continued sorting merchant ships.
The 'Akiba Maru' becomes an idol transport ship to bring entertainment to the troops.
Booped up and R&Ded the B6N1, stupid engine goes for only one other plane. So dammit I will R&D that plane too. Almost like I meant to do that. I am trying to figure out if 10 Ki27s and 60 Ki43s will be enough until my Ki44s come on line. 45 or so Ki45 bombers and 60 or so Ki61s will fill things out later in '42.

I halted Shinano, the 3 Yamatos, Junyo, Hiyo, and a bunch of merchant ships and transport subs. Accelerated Taiho and her first sister and a few small ships. I am already short a bit on naval points, so may covert some more merchant points.

I need to find some troops to put in Shanghai to replace the Southern army division that I will be shipping out. I wonder if I can afford to steal a mixed brigade from Kwantung? I think that would be enough garrison points but I am already down to 345 PP.

It's too late now, but did you run your turn 1 against yourself to check for errors?

Conversions - at least 6 to 8 Lima to AKEs; many of the xAKs to xAK -t; small xAKLs to PB and ACM; all in size 6 ports or larger (If you do too many in size 6 they can take two weeks plus to complete).

The hard part is in turn 2 and for early Dec to decide what you are going to do for R&D.

I hope you are using Tracker. It makes life less stressful.

Actually turn 2 wasn't too bad; everything is still heading to port.
I think in a day or two I have to organize convoys and what not.
I don't think I can convert to AKEs yet, but I made a bunch of small 14kt and 11kt PBs, 1 AV (18kt), 1 AS, 2 ADS and 4 AGs.

These aren't hard numbers, it was just what was in repair ports on turn two. You think Limas for AKEs? I wasn't sure between Limas and Adens. Thanks for the help on that.

I didn't try to run the turn against myself cause I didn't know I could. It seems to have worked with one minor reporting error for Wargmr; he didn't get any message about PoWs and Repulse. I am waiting for his second turn to come back, I am unsure if I should just ignore Mindanao for now or invade to use it as an advanced base.

~Glittering like hoar-frost to my wandering eyes;~

Okay we are back again. Turn 3 is ongoing, but I had some questions.
I have not played in something like 8 years so funny things happened. I set every base with heavy industry to stockpile oil not fuel. Doh! That's fixed now.

Wargmr sent 4 American and 3 British destroyers into Formosa waters sinking 2 AKs but lost a couple American and a couple British destroyers, HMS Thanet is essentially the luckiest ship around. Nothing would hit it!
I still had one I boat with mini sub off Pearl So I decided (me smert!) to send it in to drop off the mini sub and maybe hit something. Yea, the I boat started in, hit a mine. The captain tries conning out of the harbour hits another mine. Still wasn't sunk but the engines were disabled, so the crew went to work... and they drifted into a third mine!

Okay question time; I am having more problems moving supplies then in WITP. I have Gifu and Maebashi both set to stockpile: yes, and try to get 15000 supplies. This turn Gifu brought in a few hundred and Maebashi a couple thousand but I would really like to repair the factories there.

Am I missing something? Doing something boneheaded? Or are Wargmr's saboteurs at work? I have Tokyo and Osaka set to not stockpile supplies since they have so much and I was hoping it would move.

Okay, back to December 10th (Dai Nihon time), I will try to finish this turn tonight so I can quickly crush Wargmr.

Priceless! Your sub was a minesweeper -- 3 times!

To get supplies to increase at a base in general do not click stockpile to "yes." Too many bases with "yes" to stockpiling anything mean nothing will accumulate that thing. Too confusing.

Instead, increase the toggle for supply need to "x" amount. The base will then try to accumulate supply to 3x the amount of "x." If you have Gifu at 7k, it will try to achieve ~21k of supplies.

Large ports will naturally accumulate more fuel and large airfields will likely accumulate more supply.

~Up towards the glorious moon I raised my head,

I am always astonished about how poorly planned the Japanese attack was; why is there no repair ship at Pelilu (sp?). Why is there no AD around Formosa? Where did they think spare torps were going to come from?

So I am still rearranging ships to fill these gaps.

I am seriously short of any kind of escorting force so I am sending from Kure to Saigon:
2 BB (Nagato, Mutsu)
1 CS
2 CL
5 DD (1 modern, 4 old)

It is not much but it will help, they are going to stop by the Philippine coast on the way to scare the Houston which scared me last turn when it alone hit my landing at Legaspi. Houston vs 1 CL and 6 or so DDs. Not much happened, 1 8" shell hit my CL.

I want western Borneo as patrol and fighter bases in the central Indies, so I started by dropping a battalion in Miri. Imagine my surprise when there was a unit there! Luckily it was just a base force, Miri is mine and a regiment plus engineers are landing in Brunei on the 14th or 15th. I bought out the electric engineers from Manchuria.
Them, the 21st division, 2 tank regiments and supports are planning for Palembang with only one problem; what do I put in Shanghai to keep it's garrison value up? I have nothing left to put there.

Stupid Dutch Subs..

from storage facility on island ? Formosa was not fleet base for area it was just starting positions for land invasions.
Japanese moves were quite well planned and executed.

You need more ships, Mike likes to use aggressive way his fleet, so you need at least 2 cover TF for invasion.
Best is to have 2 x TF composed of 2 cruisers + 3-4 destroyers. Remember that each strait passing is occasion for ambush.

Get 2 - 3 forward airfields move there air HQ and yours torpedo bombers it will force him to abandon DEI ( you need base to have bombers and fighters in range of Sorabaja to deny him ability to rearm bigger ships.

And Palembang is the most important place to take as soon as possible, you can loose war there.

I thought Joe Wilkerson was aggressive with his ships early! Whoo, Mike is hitting me with everything he has, I am assuming he is just having the crews give all of their personal effects to the Navy depots for shipment home, because they are on suicide missions.
His PT boats are dying like flies, but both Marblehead and Houston have barely been touched. Chokai particularly does not seem like it wants to hit American ships.

Kong & Haruna headed south to try to catch transports off Java/Sumatra, they sank 4 MLs and small craft but no tankers. Then, 3 swordfish attack, 1 was shot down, 1 damaged but the third hit Kongo with a torp.

I am terrible at writing AARs, so I ask you to forgive me.
It is the 17th of December in our game, I never remember to mention that.

Hong Kong and Alor Star fell today which was very nice, the 303,000 free fuel at Hong Kong will keep my fleet running for a long time.

We had a humorous collection of sub attacks on destroyers which ALL missed. Neither one of us is having more than marginal luck with subs.

I am unsure when to start loading 21st division, a tank regiment and 2 engineer regiments for Palembang; maybe the end of Dec I will start the loading. The 4th division is still planning for the Philippines and I think I will start loading it tomorrow or the next day. I would like to clear Luzon fast, get everything moved elsewhere. He has almost everything in Manila as far as I can see. I have troops heading to Kuching now, as well as a base in North Borneo, a raider will land in Davao in a couple of days as my scouts see nothing there.

I have Victoria point now, and Tavoy in a couple days, so I started moving forward some AF support units; I will put the army units in Bangkok and then Rangoon while the navy units will go to VP and then Tavoy. I would like to put 45 Zeros and 60 Nells in Tavoy within a couple weeks.

Well, we are up to the first week of January '42. At the beginning Wargmr was fighting tooth and nail, but now things are very quiet. Except for AVG I have seen almost no Allied aircraft. I took Kuching and Rabaul yesterday without incident, but I did not remember that Tarakan had CD guns. Ouch, another great AP down. My SNLF will wait a day or two until a regiment lands at the (empty) neighbor base, then we will attack.

I am just north of Kuala Lumpur (sp?).. um, whatever Malaysia's capital is. I attacked, but did not win but caused more casualties than I took. Not worried about that either as I am a few days from surrounding most of his force in central Malaya. Yay me!

Unfortunately, a bad thing happened in the Philippines... I do not know why at all. I rested my troops in Lingayen, sent them into Clark from two hexes and attacked. Pretty much the worst combat result I have ever gained as Japan in '42.

Ground combat at Clark Field (79,76)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 17787 troops, 160 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 749

Defending force 19014 troops, 252 guns, 545 vehicles, Assault Value = 791

Japanese adjusted assault: 50

Allied adjusted defense: 994

Japanese assault odds: 1 to 19 (fort level 3)

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), experience(-)
Attacker:

Japanese ground losses:
5472 casualties reported
Squads: 58 destroyed, 503 disabled
Non Combat: 3 destroyed, 69 disabled
Engineers: 1 destroyed, 62 disabled
Guns lost 41 (1 destroyed, 40 disabled)

Allied ground losses:
133 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 18 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 3 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 4 disabled
Guns lost 5 (1 destroyed, 4 disabled)

Assaulting units:
21st Ind. Engineer Regiment
65th Brigade
1st Formosa Inf. Regiment
Tanaka Det
47th Infantry Regiment
48th Engineer Regiment
Kanno Det
I./33rd Inf Regt
Yokosuka 1st SNLF
48th Field Artillery Regiment

Defending units:
31st PA Infantry/A Division
194th Tank Battalion
31st PA Infantry/B Division
1st PA Constabulary Regiment
14th PS Engineer Regiment
192nd Tank Battalion
2nd PA Constblry HW Regiment
4th PA Constabulary Regiment
26th PS Cavalry Regiment
Subic Bay Defenses
2nd PA Constabulary Regiment
31st PA Infantry/C Division
803rd Engineer Aviation Battalion
200th & 515th Coast AA Regiment
86th PS Coastal Artillery Battalion
Far East USAAF
I Philippine Corps
88th PS Field Artillery Regiment
Clark Field USAAF Base Force
Provisional GMC Grp

My recon let me down a bit as I did not spot all of the units, but disaster time.

So, I took Rabaul, and since he is very good at punishing anything lightly escorted, I sent KB with my invasion. Haven't seen any main line American fleet coming to play so I decided to hit Port Moresby. A few days earlier I had tried to use one of my AMCs to mine Port Moresby but that is where he put the bombing squadron that starts on the American transport ships and he sank my AMC.

I saw that there were a number of ships at Moresby as well so I moved KB from east of Rabaul to west and hit Moresby. Good things happened.

Morning Air attack on TF, near Port Moresby at 98,130

Weather in hex: Heavy rain

Raid detected at 94 NM, estimated altitude 14,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 35 minutes

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Type 0 x 52
B5N2 Type 97 x 57
D3A1 Type 99 x 44

Japanese aircraft losses
B5N2 Type 97: 1 damaged
D3A1 Type 99: 5 damaged

Allied Ships

Woefully under strength in your attack. Your base AV is less than 1:1 ... not a single ID there ... you simply need a LOT more of everything to assault the key basses in the PI (manila, clark, bataan).

Yea, I noticed that when I wrote the post.
My recon kept only spotting 12 units with the bulk of his force at Manila.
This is all I have so I have to make the best of it.

Methinks an AFB had his hands in AE after I left, as many Japanese field divisions have 50 exp and some of the Indian units are way to good for reality to have any hand in this. People forget that to build up the 4th, 5th and 10th Indian the British stripped all capable officers and more importantly NCOs from the rest of the army. This is why we are seeing Allied counter attacks into Burma in late '42- early '43.

January 20th 1942.
We are down to 3 cup noodles and 2 packs of ramen.

Not much has happened, we are both playing mines in the Pacific. I have Tarakan and Miri in Borneo, next turn I invade Singkawang (sp?) and Balik Papan, I lost a DMS sweeping Balik Papan yesterday, and the covering TF had CL Isuzu hit a mine for 10 float damage.
I have a flak regiment another turn back to land at Balik Papan and 24 avaiation points for Balik and 72 for Singkawang. I will put a dozen zeroes into Balik (all I have) and 27 Zeroes and 36 Nells and 9 Dinahs into Singkawang.

I took Temuoah or whatever, his last base in central Malaya. His forces retreated towards Kuantan... Have fun! Bye Bye! I routed huge amounts of his troops at Malacca so I don't expect too much resistance at Singapore.

I have 1x Inf Div, 1x SNLF, 1x tank regiment, 1x combat engineer regiment, 1x recon regiment, 1x Hvy art regiment, 1x electric engineers to invade at Palembang which will launch as soon as I have aircraft operating from southern Borneo.
Do you experienced types think this is enough? Akagi, Kaga, Ryujo and Zuiho are going with the transports.

In the Philippines I have not recovered from the heavy losses I took a week or so ago, no idea how I am going to take the place.

So, my other 4 hvy carriers were supporting my landing at Rabaul, sent them back to Truk to rearm and get a few new aircraft, plus I brought in Chitose which I like to have with the carrier group. The air groups were ragged with many aircraft in maintenance.
I received an off message two turns ago. Sighting from Jakes of 7 Allied ships SE of Truk going west. I decided not to sortie the carriers because the air groups were rough. Last turn I saw that report SW of Truk, not on the map, just a report.

So I sortied the carrier force on full speed to catch whatever this was and hopefully sink some ships. First sailing with Chitose.
This turn, found we never saw any allied ships, returned to Truk and the message every JFB dreads...
Soryu and Chitose collided entering Truk harbour. Dammit!

24th of January and the war is back on!

I landed at Samarinda and Singkawang this turn, the invasion convoy for Palembang is passing Cam Ranh.
I had a small cruiser TF at Singkawang with 2 BBs, Akagi, Kaga, Ryujo and Zuiho 100 miles off shore. At Samarinda, since it is further from my forces I had Mizuho with the Amphib group and Tanaka with the 4 Mogamis and 4 new destroyers. Cruisers, of course, only score hits against stopped opponents. Sigh.

Wargmr has 15,000 or so men at Palembang, probably means I cannot take it on landing so the 38th division will divert from Java to Sumatra if I have to. Also have both para regiments heading to Singkwang with transports so they can start taking minor ports quick and easy like.

The insanely weak 15th army is crushing the British in Burma, which is a nice bonus. I was just probing with small forces but they keep winning battles.
