While getting ready for the 2nd CoW campain scenario stumble into some questions.

1. How can I estimate what number of guided munitions I should use to destroy a given target?
I thought that "Damage Point" value of the target should be less than total value of munitions' warhead DPs. However have stumbled across a case where a warhead did much more damage than stated in the database: cruise missile KD-63 does twice as much damage as stated in DB. So, while attacking ground fixed targets like tarmac or pier, this missile does about 1000 DP with its 513 DP warhead.

2. What do explosion rings and circles mean?
It seems that expanding white ring is an explosion blast. After it an expanding red circle appears. Is it dust and smoke polluted area?

3. How can I estimate explosion radius?
I'm sure in real life generals take this informatin into account while planing a strike mission. It seems 500 DP warhead has a blast radius about 100-140 meters.

4. Why does a warhead which did much more damage (in DP) than needed to destroy a target (according to its "Damage Points" value) fail to actually destroy it.
A tarmac has 300 DP strength. Got more than 1000 DP damage -> 99.7% damage
A revetment has 300 DP hp. Got more than 1000 DP -> 99.7% damage status
Here is my test scen file after these explosions.

This comes mainly from experience. The weapon nominal DP values represent the explosive damage afflicted on the target on external point impact (e.g. a Mk84 hitting a HAS and detonating on impact). In cases where the weapon is able to punch through the target armor and detonate inside (as probably happened in your KD-63 example), the damage is significantly magnified because of the enclosed structure.

Correct on the blast. The brown/red circles are the "impact craters", indicating where the weapon actually impacted (unless the weapon achieves a direct hit on the target, the actual impact point can differ significantly from the aiming point).

Again this is acquired empirically. Generally you don't want to rely on blast for the destruction of hard targets. For those you want direct hits with large (or penetration) warheads.

Open-air facilities like tarmacs, revetments etc. cannot be physically destroyed completely with conventional weapons. Think about it: Even if you reduce a tarmac to gravel rubble, a small helo or VTOL aircraft can still use it (....but nothing else can). The only way to completely remove such targets is with the fireball of a nuclear detonation.

Cheers.

Dimitris, thanks for information. Much appreciated.

Well, it is the first time I has noticed that a blast wave of any powerful explosion is very good at destroying fragile targets like grounded airplanes in the open. That KD-63 had a good probability to destroy any parked aircraft in a 100m radius.

I agree, that makes sense.
