It's the anniversary of the Yom Kippur War today circa 1973, 44 years ago. Is that the only major war were ATGM had a huge effect? I've heard that the newer Israeli tanks have anti missle systems in them nowdays and last time they were in battle it worked. Also I was watching Vice's Lebanon's Illegal Arms Dealers here and the hezbollah gun seller at the end said (11:50 on) they gave Israel a defeat. You think he might be lying? Does Israel lie to the media about their losses? I heard someone say here that people don't 100% know the Order of Battle for Israel in the YKW. Anyways I bet that gun seller at the end was trying to rip that guy off!

Humbling of the Tank is an excellent scenario to see the effects of ATGM's without infantry support.

It represents the heavy losses the Israeli's suffered at the beginning of the 1973 war.

Good point Three63. There's the seemingly never-ending battle between the unstoppable force of the cannon ball vs the immovable object of the steel plate, that has gone on for centuries.

No victor of the war, just battles where one or the other held the advantage. Certainly the first phase of Yom Kippur war was a hard lesson for the arrogant IDF tankers, indeed look no further than to the scenario Jason pointed out. Kings of the battle field no more.

They adapted, of course. ATGM operators needed to keep the target locked on their display, so move, use smoke, fire at the missile launch location. And soon, the ATGM teams were not that effective anymore.

This continues even today: reactive armor, as you mentioned, vs armor piercing ammunition with multiple arrows / ATGMs with multiple warheads ...
