Finally victory points. I can't really complain. I know for certain things will get worse before they get better, but I am not doing that badly.

This is the last post for the beginning of April, 1942, so any questions, comments, etc. are more than welcome!

One last table. This is the (possible) tabulation of naval losses for both sides. It should give an idea on how things have been going at sea so far:

April 12th, 1942

Game has been slow, mostly my fault. But it has not stopped.

Last turn, Manila fell. It held far more than I would have dreamed of, even with the IJA reinforcing heavily. Interestingly, the land combats did not damage industry, only the naval bombardments did. I can't complain, really. Those guys did their best, even on their last turn they took 46 IJA army squads with them!

Japanese Deliberate attack at Manila (79,77)

Attacking force 60070 troops, 655 guns, 238 vehicles, Assault Value = 944
Defending force 48016 troops, 363 guns, 100 vehicles, Assault Value = 753
Japanese adjusted assault: 837
Allied adjusted defense: 415
Japanese assault odds: 2 to 1 (fort level 0)
Japanese forces CAPTURE Manila !!!

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), leaders(+), experience(-), supply(-)
Attacker:

Japanese ground losses:
* 2626 casualties reported
*** Squads: 46 destroyed, 149 disabled
*** Non Combat: 1 destroyed, 59 disabled
*** Engineers: 8 destroyed, 25 disabled
*** Vehicles lost 7 (3 destroyed, 4 disabled)

Allied ground losses:
* 36437 casualties reported
*** Squads: 1282 destroyed, 0 disabled
*** Non Combat: 1870 destroyed, 0 disabled
*** Engineers: 81 destroyed, 0 disabled
*** Guns lost 388 (388 destroyed, 0 disabled)
*** Vehicles lost 147 (147 destroyed, 0 disabled)
*** Units destroyed 34

Palembang still holds, although supply levels are beginning to get low. Java has been invaded, and 6k Japanese and 25 or so guns have just arrived in Soerbaja. Another 5k or so troops have just taken Semarang. Medan has been lost.

Two IJN Assault Divs attacked Port Moresby overland. They were repulsed with heavy casualties and I do not think they are in shape to return any time soon.

I will make my fortnightly report after April 15th.

More posts. More action. April 15th is to far away for me to wait. Just kidding somewhat. Really enjoy this AAR. Please keep it up.

@DOCUP, with RL allowed me to! Sadly, it does not. But I will make it a point to write a thorough state of the war in just one more turn :)

Please forgive my lack of attention to this in the last few weeks (months really, but I had promised to do an April 15th update). A nephew was ran over by a vehicle in Berlin, and it was rather serious. They had to induce a coma due to the pain. Thankfully he is much better and, with time, will recuperate fully. The German health system is top notch, and they are taking incredible care of him.

Anyways, this is what has been going on:

April 20th, 1942

With the exception of a major Allied air attack last turn, not much has happened since my last post. I will leave desert for last, so first, the strategic situation:

Carriers:

4x USN and 3x RN fleet carriers operational and undamaged. All fleet carriers upgraded. USN Ranger will be available in 8 days (4 turns).
1x RN, 1x RAN, and 1x RNZN CVLs operational and undamaged.
2x USN CLV operational and undamaged. Will start conversions into CVL as soon as Ranger is deployed.
2x USN CVE operational and undamaged. 4x more in the conversion pipeline, and will be ready to deploy in 46, 46, 76, and 132 days.

Surface Capital Ships:

5x USN BB and 5x RN BB operational and undamaged. An additional 8x USN BB in different stages of repair, with 2x Colorado-class and 1x Pennsylvania-class returning to duty in the next fortnight.
1x USN BC and 1x RN BC operational and undamaged. 1x USN BC ate a fish and will be in repairs for (expected) 9 months or so.

Cruisers:

4x USN, 2x RAN, and 4x RN CA operational and undamaged. A further 9x USN CA coming off refit in the next 4 days.
3x USN, 3x RAN, 2x RNZN, 11x RN, 1x French, and 5x Dutch CL operational and undamaged. A further 3x USN CL coming off refit in the next 15 days.
1x USN and 1 Dutch CLAA operational and undamaged. A further 5x USN Cl coming off refit in the next 15 days (the Omahas).

Below you can see the most important ship losses from both sides. I am doing good, and last turn was not bad either (see desert section, at the end of this string of posts):

In the air, the strategic situation favours the allies, although the Japanese can have local superiority wherever they wish to focus. Thankfully, they do not have enough units to focus everywhere, so although they own the skies above Palembang and China, I am holding my own over Burma and Java. New Guinea is a side show for the time being.

These have been the air losses so far. Note that most of the air fighting has happened over Allied airbases, so I expect pilot losses to be higher for Japan than for the Allies.

Pilot losses, compared to plane losses, have been somewhat light, with more Allied pilots wounded than killed. With the exception of Dutch, Aussie and Kiwi pilots, training programs are coming along well.

China

Delaying my esteemed opponent in China has not come without cost. Fortunately, I have made him bleed quite a bit, so he can't attack with impunity. He IS making advances, but not as quickly as he would have hoped for. Not vacating the cities in clear hexes was something he did not expect. Here is "northern" China. I had to vacate Yenan, but my defenses in the region are strong, especially with the terrain there. Loyang has not fallen, and I have made the Japanese army bleed there. I will lose the city within a month, but I have been able to delay my opponent in the Chengchow-Loyang region more than I had expected. Meanwhile Lanchow and Sian are safe... at least for the moment.

In "southern" China I have lost some cities, but I have also been able to delay my opponent (and bleed him whenever possible). He tried to take Chengchow and Changsha, and failed, so he is now going for smaller targets. I am being as disruptive and obnoxious as I can there, using terrain and maneuver more than direct confrontation.

The DEI

Medan has been lost in "northern" Sumatra, but Palembang still holds! Palembang has over 355k oil in storage, but less than 5k fuel. I think turning off the refineries will have some effect. I hold no illusions about Palembang, it will fall soon. But it is late April, so I can't really complain. The chaps of the 18th British ID have done their job and, although almost out of supply, they still have an AV of 322. Jolly good! If the battle drags into May, I think it will have been worth it.

My esteemed opponent invaded Java in three points. In the south he is beating a hasty retreat from Soerbaja, as he found the place fortified and well-defended by land and air. In the middle ha has taken Semarang and Djokjakarta, but will lose them soon. In the north he has taken Merak.

I decided a number of turns ago (after I sunk a Kido Butai CarDiv) that I would try to hold Java. Since then, I have reinforced it heavily with air units, and sent the 6th Aussie ID plus minor units to help hold it. When the USN cruisers finish their refits I will sail the fleet carriers and reinforce the island even more. I think I have a chance to hold it.

Something happened here last turn (I have the combat replay but not the turn itself). See my last post to see what happened.

Burma

Once again, my esteemed opponent is trying to advance here and, although it will take some doing, I do not think I need to retreat just yet. Chinese forces are now training in both Lashio (1100+ AV) and Myitkina (650+ AV), while other, better trained and equipped Allied forces are holding the front line: 17th Indian ID, 1st Burma ID, 46th Indian Bde, 7th Aussie ID, and 7th Arm Bde hold the river line supported by 5x Arty Rgts, and reinforcements are on the way.

Not everything is peachy, though, as there are IJN 2E bombers stationed in Port Blair. I was lucky and bombarded the place once, but I can't do that again without serious fighter cover (which I am still training).

New Guinea and the Solomons

This has become a sideshow in more ways than one. My esteemed opponent now knows I have deployed serious naval assets in the region, so he does not come out to play. I have used the opportunity to upgrade radars and anti aircraft on most of the USN ships there. The only action last turn, for example, was B-17s from Townsville bombing the 2x IJN Assault Divs in Dobadura (which are in bad shape too). I do not expect to lose Port Moresby unless I get careless.

Alaska

If there is something going right for the Japanese is their submarine fleet. They have sunk and damaged more than I would have expected. Those skippers must be good! Alsaka is a good example of this. The Japanese invaded Attu Island, so I reinforced Adak and Dutch Harbor. I even sent a strong surface force to defend the last. What did I get? A fish or two on BC Constellation. She will be out of the war for most (if not all) the rest of 1942.

Still, the region is no pushover. Even if Falken decided to attack en force, there is enough there to push him back with great loss for Japan.

India

Every air transport squadron the Allies can move to Ledo is either there, or well on its way. Those squadrons with operational planes are flying the Hump, and those that don't have them (the C-47 starts arriving next month) are training. I am doing all I know to keep China viable.

Besides that, a number of USAAF squadrons and 2x USA IDs have arrived in India. I do not think a Japanese invasion is viable at this point, but I am not letting my guard down. Airfields are being developed, defensive troops are in place, and the Rangoon Express (TM) sails constantly with men and supplies to keep Burma in fighting shape.

Now for dessert...

The following two events happened last turn. Suffice it to say that my esteemed opponent was understandably upset.

Loyang

Loyang was about to fall. Thus, I decided to retreat the strong units in Tsiaotso to Loyang, as I did not want to have to retreat them through difficult terrain without roads. These were the two combats for the turn:

Japanese Deliberate attack at Loyang (87,43) DAY ONE
Japanese assault odds: 1 to 1 (fort level 1)
Japanese Assault reduces fortifications to 0

Japanese ground losses:
* 1148 casualties reported
*** Squads: 48 destroyed, 23 disabled
*** Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 23 disabled
*** Engineers: 2 destroyed, 8 disabled
*** Guns lost 10 (7 destroyed, 3 disabled)
Allied ground losses:
* 2278 casualties reported
*** Squads: 146 destroyed, 58 disabled
*** Non Combat: 4 destroyed, 104 disabled
*** Engineers: 5 destroyed, 9 disabled
*** Guns lost 39 (2 destroyed, 37 disabled)

Assaulting units:
110th Division
36th Division
13th Division
26th Engineer Regiment
35th Division
68th Division
27th Division
59th Division
1st Ind.Mixed Brigade
12th Tank Regiment
32nd Division
15th Tank Regiment
26th Recon Regiment
1st Mortar Battalion
2nd Ind. Mountain Gun Regiment
14th Medium Field Artillery Regiment
6th Medium Field Artillery Regiment
15th Ind.Medium Field Artillery Regiment
1st Army
11th Field Artillery Regiment

Defending units:
85th Chinese Corps
80th Chinese Corps
9th Chinese Corps
3rd Construction Regiment
7th Chinese Corps
2nd Chinese Cavalry Corps

7th Construction Regiment
Jingcha War Area
14th Group Army
39th Group Army
3rd Group Army
21st Group Army
36th Group Army
1st War Area

That was to be expected, and the city would have fallen the next day, were it not for the timely arrival of reinforcements. Not that the city won't fall, it will. But the shape those Japanese units must be in is... a relief!

Japanese Deliberate attack at Loyang (87,43) DAY TWO
Japanese engineers reduce fortifications to 0
Japanese assault odds: 1 to 2 (fort level 0)

Japanese ground losses:
* 4649 casualties reported
*** Squads: 253 destroyed, 120 disabled
*** Non Combat: 20 destroyed, 160 disabled
*** Engineers: 36 destroyed, 31 disabled
*** Guns lost 74 (28 destroyed, 46 disabled)
*** Vehicles lost 30 (1 destroyed, 29 disabled)
Allied ground losses:
* 3747 casualties reported
*** Squads: 134 destroyed, 38 disabled
*** Non Combat: 23 destroyed, 221 disabled
*** Engineers: 8 destroyed, 10 disabled
*** Guns lost 35 (16 destroyed, 19 disabled)

Assaulting units:
59th Division
110th Division
68th Division
26th Engineer Regiment
1st Ind.Mixed Brigade
27th Division
35th Division
32nd Division
15th Tank Regiment
13th Division
12th Tank Regiment
37th Division
36th Division
116th Division
26th Recon Regiment
14th Medium Field Artillery Regiment
1st Mortar Battalion
2nd Ind. Mountain Gun Regiment
6th Medium Field Artillery Regiment
1st Army
15th Ind.Medium Field Artillery Regiment
11th Field Artillery Regiment

Defending units:
2nd Chinese Cavalry Corps
85th Chinese Corps
38th Chinese Corps
43rd Chinese Corps
34th Chinese Corps
96th Chinese Corps
7th Chinese Corps
98th Chinese Corps
61st Chinese Corps
93rd Chinese Corps
9th Chinese Corps
80th Chinese Corps
27th Chinese Corps
7th Construction Regiment
Jingcha War Area
1st War Area
84th Chinese Corps
8th Group Army
39th Group Army
36th Group Army
14th Group Army
21st Group Army
3rd Group Army
15th Group Army
3rd Construction Regiment
4th Chinese Base Force

Again, the city will fall. But not on my opponent's terms.

Java

One of the first measures I took to defend Java was to send the torpedo squadrons from Singapore and the USAAF A-24s and USN SB2U-3 dive bombers from Darwin and other places to train and eventually fight in the DEI. The squadrons from Singapore have had their good and bad days, but last turn was one of the good ones. The Army Air Force boys have been training in naval attack, far better suited for their planes. So have the SB2U-3s. It finally paid off in day 2 of the turn:

Morning Air attack on TF, near Kalidjati at 50,99
Allied aircraft
*** Albacore I x 12
*** Kittyhawk IA x 11
*** Swordfish II x 3
Allied aircraft losses
*** Albacore I: 1 damaged, 1 destroyed by flak
*** Swordfish II: 2 damaged

Japanese Ships
*** BB Yamashiro, Torpedo hits 1
*** xAK Wakatu Maru
*** BC Hiei

Morning Air attack on TF, near Kalidjati at 50,99
Allied aircraft
*** Swordfish II x 9
Allied aircraft losses
*** Swordfish II: 2 damaged

Japanese Ships
*** BB Nagato, Torpedo hits 2, heavy damage
*** BB Hitachi

Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Kalidjati at 50,99

Allied aircraft
*** Albacore I x 3
*** SB2U-3 Vindicator x 18
*** Swordfish II x 3
Allied aircraft losses
*** SB2U-3 Vindicator: 1 destroyed by flak
*** Swordfish II: 2 damaged

Japanese Ships
*** BC Hiei, Bomb hits 2
*** BB Yamashiro, Bomb hits 2

Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Kalidjati at 50,99

Allied aircraft
*** SB2U-3 Vindicator x 36
Allied aircraft losses
*** SB2U-3 Vindicator: 1 damaged

Japanese Ships
*** xAK Yamabiko Maru, Bomb hits 4, heavy fires, heavy damage
*** CL Suzuya
*** xAK Hoeisan Maru, Bomb hits 2, on fire
*** BB Hitachi, Bomb hits 1
*** xAK Taian Maru, Bomb hits 1, on fire
*** xAK Ryusei Maru, Bomb hits 4, heavy fires, heavy damage
Japanese ground losses:
* 555 casualties reported
*** Squads: 3 destroyed, 0 disabled
*** Non Combat: 16 destroyed, 27 disabled

Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Kalidjati at 50,99

Allied aircraft
*** Albacore I x 7
*** Kittyhawk IA x 11
*** Swordfish II x 6
Allied aircraft losses
*** Albacore I: 4 damaged
*** Swordfish II: 2 damaged, 1 destroyed by flak

Japanese Ships
*** BB Yamashiro, Torpedo hits 4, on fire, heavy damage
*** DD Kuroshio

Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Kalidjati at 50,99

Allied aircraft
*** A-24 Banshee x 16
Allied aircraft losses
*** A-24 Banshee: 1 damaged

Japanese Ships
*** BC Hiei, Bomb hits 4, on fire, heavy smoke from fires obscuring BC Hiei
*** DD Hatsukaze

Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Kalidjati at 50,99

Allied aircraft
*** A-24 Banshee x 16
Allied aircraft losses
*** A-24 Banshee: 1 damaged

Japanese Ships
*** BC Hiei, Bomb hits 1, on fire, heavy smoke from fires obscuring BC Hiei
*** DD Amatsukaze
*** BB Yamashiro, Bomb hits 2, on fire, heavy damage

Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Kalidjati at 50,99

Allied aircraft
*** A-24 Banshee x 12
No Allied losses

Japanese Ships
*** BC Hiei, heavy fires, heavy smoke from fires obscuring BC Hiei
*** DD Oyashio
*** CA Mikuma, Bomb hits 1, on fire
*** DD Kuroshio

My esteemed opponent called it the second worst turn in the game's history, which leads me to believe at least one capital ship has sunk or will sink, and 2x xAK should be sunk or close to it. Total hits were:

BB Yamashiro, Torpedo hits 5, Bomb hits 4, on fire, heavy damage
BB Nagato, Torpedo hits 2, heavy damage
BC Hiei, Bomb hits 7, on fire, heavy smoke from fires obscuring BC Hiei
BB Hitachi, Bomb hits 1

CA Mikuma, Bomb hits 1, on fire

xAK Yamabiko Maru, Bomb hits 4, heavy fires, heavy damage
xAK Hoeisan Maru, Bomb hits 2, on fire
xAK Taian Maru, Bomb hits 1, on fire
xAK Ryusei Maru, Bomb hits 4, heavy fires, heavy damage

As I wrote several times, this was desert!

Seems like he is smarting for not providing CAP for some very valuable ships. you taught him a costly lesson you can't let planes attack ships without CAP.

Yes. It seems he forgot that little detail.

Although losses have been high, I have had some success in the past with unescorted or lightly escorted torpedo bombers flying at 5k feet. This time escort was light, but the no CAP situation made bombing a lot easier.

Although I am trying to stick to a fortnightly report on how the war is progressing, I will make an additional post once in a while.

On April 26th, 1942, Palembang finally fell. The 18th Brit Inf Div is down to 140 AV, but almost half of the division's squads are disabled, not destroyed. I will try to help them survive, maybe even leave Sumatra. The current correlation of forces makes this a possibility, although nothing is assured. I will need tons of luck, though. We will see.

Reports say that Palembang's industry is currently at Resources 89(12), Oil 881(120), Refinery 661(90), and Light Industry 67(9). Installations are at 47 airfield damage and 13 port damage.

1st Air Assault Division took Madioen by air assault last turn. My mistake, I grew careless. I lost 2x squadrons of bombers, but I did get some enemy transports on the way in. The invasion of Java is in full swing now.

The 46k+ IJA troops that crossed the river in Burma are retreating yet again. Perhaps it was the 7th Aussie Inf Div plus the 7th Brit Arm Bde sharing the hex with them, perhaps it was the 4th USA Inf Div moving to the hex, perhaps it was the pounding of 4 squadrons of B-17s joined by a like number of British bombers, or perhaps it was a combination of the three. I will shock attack the turn that the Japanese numbers are lower (from part of the units crossing the river), and then I will evaluate what to do.

IJA units have made inroads in China, but have not taken any additional cities so far. Defense has been enough for the enemy to have to either stop attacking or move reinforcements in. Neither has happened so far. Loyang still holds. It will fall, but Japanese dead there are mounting up.

Even with the loss of Palembang, last turn I only lost 68 VP. Airframe losses were 142-75, advantage Allies. Neither side can maintain that tempo, but time is on my side, not Japan's. Take a peek:

Will post a full report when we finish April.
