Now for dessert... The following two events happened last turn. Suffice it to say that my esteemed opponent was understandably upset. Loyang Loyang was about to fall. Thus, I decided to retreat the strong units in Tsiaotso to Loyang, as I did not want to have to retreat them through difficult terrain without roads. These were the two combats for the turn: Japanese Deliberate attack at Loyang (87,43) DAY ONE Japanese assault odds: 1 to 1 (fort level 1) Japanese Assault reduces fortifications to 0 Japanese ground losses: * 1148 casualties reported *** Squads: 48 destroyed, 23 disabled *** Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 23 disabled *** Engineers: 2 destroyed, 8 disabled *** Guns lost 10 (7 destroyed, 3 disabled) Allied ground losses: * 2278 casualties reported *** Squads: 146 destroyed, 58 disabled *** Non Combat: 4 destroyed, 104 disabled *** Engineers: 5 destroyed, 9 disabled *** Guns lost 39 (2 destroyed, 37 disabled) Assaulting units: 110th Division 36th Division 13th Division 26th Engineer Regiment 35th Division 68th Division 27th Division 59th Division 1st Ind.Mixed Brigade 12th Tank Regiment 32nd Division 15th Tank Regiment 26th Recon Regiment 1st Mortar Battalion 2nd Ind. Mountain Gun Regiment 14th Medium Field Artillery Regiment 6th Medium Field Artillery Regiment 15th Ind.Medium Field Artillery Regiment 1st Army 11th Field Artillery Regiment Defending units: 85th Chinese Corps 80th Chinese Corps 9th Chinese Corps 3rd Construction Regiment 7th Chinese Corps 2nd Chinese Cavalry Corps 98th Chinese Corps 84th Chinese Corps 38th Chinese Corps 96th Chinese Corps 7th Construction Regiment Jingcha War Area 14th Group Army 39th Group Army 3rd Group Army 21st Group Army 36th Group Army 1st War Area That was to be expected, and the city would have fallen the next day, were it not for the timely arrival of reinforcements. Not that the city won't fall, it will. But the shape those Japanese units must be in is... a relief! Japanese Deliberate attack at Loyang (87,43) DAY TWO Japanese engineers reduce fortifications to 0 Japanese assault odds: 1 to 2 (fort level 0) Japanese ground losses: * 4649 casualties reported *** Squads: 253 destroyed, 120 disabled *** Non Combat: 20 destroyed, 160 disabled *** Engineers: 36 destroyed, 31 disabled *** Guns lost 74 (28 destroyed, 46 disabled) *** Vehicles lost 30 (1 destroyed, 29 disabled) Allied ground losses: * 3747 casualties reported *** Squads: 134 destroyed, 38 disabled *** Non Combat: 23 destroyed, 221 disabled *** Engineers: 8 destroyed, 10 disabled *** Guns lost 35 (16 destroyed, 19 disabled) Assaulting units: 59th Division 110th Division 68th Division 26th Engineer Regiment 1st Ind.Mixed Brigade 27th Division 35th Division 32nd Division 15th Tank Regiment 13th Division 12th Tank Regiment 37th Division 36th Division 116th Division 26th Recon Regiment 14th Medium Field Artillery Regiment 1st Mortar Battalion 2nd Ind. But not on my opponent's terms. Java One of the first measures I took to defend Java was to send the torpedo squadrons from Singapore and the USAAF A-24s and USN SB2U-3 dive bombers from Darwin and other places to train and eventually fight in the DEI. The squadrons from Singapore have had their good and bad days, but last turn was one of the good ones. The Army Air Force boys have been training in naval attack, far better suited for their planes. So have the SB2U-3s. It finally paid off in day 2 of the turn: Morning Air attack on TF, near Kalidjati at 50,99 Allied aircraft *** Albacore I x 12 *** Kittyhawk IA x 11 *** Swordfish II x 3 Allied aircraft losses *** Albacore I: 1 damaged, 1 destroyed by flak *** Swordfish II: 2 damaged Japanese Ships *** BB Yamashiro, Torpedo hits 1 *** xAK Wakatu Maru *** BC Hiei Morning Air attack on TF, near Kalidjati at 50,99 Allied aircraft *** Swordfish II x 9 Allied aircraft losses *** Swordfish II: 2 damaged Japanese Ships *** BB Nagato, Torpedo hits 2, heavy damage *** BB Hitachi Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Kalidjati at 50,99 Allied aircraft *** Albacore I x 3 *** SB2U-3 Vindicator x 18 *** Swordfish II x 3 Allied aircraft losses *** SB2U-3 Vindicator: 1 destroyed by flak *** Swordfish II: 2 damaged Japanese Ships *** BC Hiei, Bomb hits 2 *** BB Yamashiro, Bomb hits 2 Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Kalidjati at 50,99 Allied aircraft *** SB2U-3 Vindicator x 36 Allied aircraft losses *** SB2U-3 Vindicator: 1 damaged Japanese Ships *** xAK Yamabiko Maru, Bomb hits 4, heavy fires, heavy damage *** CL Suzuya *** xAK Hoeisan Maru, Bomb hits 2, on fire *** BB Hitachi, Bomb hits 1 *** xAK Taian Maru, Bomb hits 1, on fire *** xAK Ryusei Maru, Bomb hits 4, heavy fires, heavy damage Japanese ground losses: * 555 casualties reported *** Squads: 3 destroyed, 0 disabled *** Non Combat: 16 destroyed, 27 disabled Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Kalidjati at 50,99 Allied aircraft *** Albacore I x 7 *** Kittyhawk IA x 11 *** Swordfish II x 6 Allied aircraft losses *** Albacore I: 4 damaged *** Swordfish II: 2 damaged, 1 destroyed by flak Japanese Ships *** BB Yamashiro, Torpedo hits 4, on fire, heavy damage *** DD Kuroshio Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Kalidjati at 50,99 Allied aircraft *** A-24 Banshee x 16 Allied aircraft losses *** A-24 Banshee: 1 damaged Japanese Ships *** BC Hiei, Bomb hits 4, on fire, heavy smoke from fires obscuring BC Hiei *** DD Hatsukaze Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Kalidjati at 50,99 Allied aircraft *** A-24 Banshee x 16 Allied aircraft losses *** A-24 Banshee: 1 damaged Japanese Ships *** BC Hiei, Bomb hits 1, on fire, heavy smoke from fires obscuring BC Hiei *** DD Amatsukaze *** BB Yamashiro, Bomb hits 2, on fire, heavy damage Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Kalidjati at 50,99 Allied aircraft *** A-24 Banshee x 12 No Allied losses Japanese Ships *** BC Hiei, heavy fires, heavy smoke from fires obscuring BC Hiei *** DD Oyashio *** CA Mikuma, Bomb hits 1, on fire *** DD Kuroshio My esteemed opponent called it the second worst turn in the game's history, which leads me to believe at least one capital ship has sunk or will sink, and 2x xAK should be sunk or close to it. Total hits were: BB Yamashiro, Torpedo hits 5, Bomb hits 4, on fire, heavy damage BB Nagato, Torpedo hits 2, heavy damage BC Hiei, Bomb hits 7, on fire, heavy smoke from fires obscuring BC Hiei BB Hitachi, Bomb hits 1 CA Mikuma, Bomb hits 1, on fire xAK Yamabiko Maru, Bomb hits 4, heavy fires, heavy damage xAK Hoeisan Maru, Bomb hits 2, on fire xAK Taian Maru, Bomb hits 1, on fire xAK Ryusei Maru, Bomb hits 4, heavy fires, heavy damage As I wrote several times, this was desert!
