He is cutting it very fine then, because as you can see from the below screenshot, it is about to down in the DEI, and it is March 27th.

March 26-27, 1942

As you can probably tell from the screenshot above, the focus is on the DEI. West of Borneo is a group of carriers that sinks some small coastal minesweepers and a minelayer. Everything else has left the area. East of Borneo is another group of carriers, that bombs Madjene port and damages the AVP lurking there.

There are multiple sub contacts, including a Dutch sub launching four torpedoes at CVE Taiyo, but no hits.

We are as set up as we are going to get. Now we just wait for him to close.

The Japanese are WAY behind schedule here, but they only need to land at one base on each island, take it and bring in the rest of the troops to march overland. That said, there will be lots of islands in the lower DEI that the Japanese will likely not take and you can exploit during your comeback. And a landing in Australia is unlikely before you get a chance to reinforce and resupply northern bases.

Good luck with the resistance to his invasions!

March 28, 1942

It's a pretty big day in the war, as the first Japanese troops storm ashore at Kalidjati. Assume he picked this base, rather than Batavia, because it is lightly defended. By infantry at least. Because we got a couple of days warning from sigint that this was where we was landing, we had every aircraft in Java focused on defending this hex.

Mike's subs get multiple sightings and a few attacks, including a 4 torp spread against CVL Karasu. But alas, no hits. Our PT boats venture into the Makassar Strait where they run into BBs Hitachi and Tosa with lots of friends. They press their attack, lose one of their number and score zero hits. So far so good for the Japanese.

Sure enough, the first light of dawn reveals a massive Japanese transport flotilla sitting off Kalidjati. Our bombers have been taking off since before dawn, and the first wave to make it over the beaches is the Dutch, escorted by a squadron of B339Ds. They run into a buzzsaw of Zeros, we assume flying from the carriers sitting about 4 hexes off the coast, and get cut to pieces. Those that make it through hit nothing.

But we didn't expect them to do anything, they are just there to distract the air defenses for the Banshees and Vildebeest. Which now start to appear in small groups. The CAP has been scattered all over by the time the first Banshees arrive, and our boys get to work. I'll post in a series of attack reports.

We obviously have incomplete intel, but it certainly looks like a massacre. Interesting is that there was no report of any unloading before the bombers went in, so only transports that survived will have put any troops ashore.

The other thing about the turn is that were a series of attacks by Kates on some of the low value targets we have in the area, mostly coastal minesweepers covering the various ports. None of the Kates strikes are escorted though, and our fighters just rip them to pieces. Tracker shows 34 Kates downed, and one of our Dutch pilots makes double ace in one day. This is a grievous weakening of Japanese carrier striking power.

It's not the first time we've seen carrier strikes go in without Zero escort, and get punished for it.

If the Japanese continue that landing they are going to be short of supply and have heavily disrupted units. Even the inexperienced Dutch units should be able to handle them. Great use of intel on that trap!

The mistake I made this turn is parking the carriers in Darwin for a fuel topup. They got buzzed by a Japanese recon plane, so now he knows we have brought some carriers to the fight, and our chance for surprise is lost.

Still, given how badly we hammered the invasion forces, not sure it is going to make too much of a difference.

March 29, 1942

Another big day in the DEI, with the landing continuing at Kalidjati and major strikes against the port at Soerebaja.

But let's start with the sub action, or lack of it. Despite a carpet of subs, the Japanese escorts are doing their jobs brilliantly, with not a single high value target falling into the crosshairs of one of our skippers. Six sub contacts and no scores. Very frustrating.

To add injury to insult, an unescorted tanker is picked off outside Pearl Harbour and sunk by two torpedoes.

The battle to hammer the landings at Kalidjati goes into a second day. The Dutch bombers have stood down because they are really rubbish at hitting ships and will be needed to bomb Kalidjati airfield to make sure the Japanese can't put fighters there. Instead the heavy lifiting is left to the US and British planes.

The first wave of Vildebeest goes in, and both the Hurricane escorts and the bombers are cut to pieces. A second wave arrives and despite some losses puts three torpedoes into xAK Tatutaki Maru, sinking her. After that the Banshees strike, but unfortunately concentrate on BB Owari, doing nothing while losing several aircraft.

The afternoon attacks don't do much better. This time the Vildebeest target the Owari, and with their torpedoes can actually do some damage. But alas, no hits. Some Banshees go after the transports and manage a hit each on an AK and an xAK. And the rest waste some more bombs on the Owari.

So, only light damage, one transport sunk and another two damaged.

It looks like the war is over for the Vildebeest. Both squadrons are shattered, and will have to stand down to switch to alternative models.

Soerebaja proves too tempting for the Japanese, there are two BBs and a BC parked there. A swarm of bombers comes over, but not a single Zero is seen to escort them. Soerebaja is now known as the 'ace factory' after we get 9 aces and 3 double aces in a single day.

What I don't understand is the regular carrier attacks without Zero escort. it seems a strange way to use one of your most precious assets. Check the air losses below. That is a lot of dead Japanese planes.

Here is the list of newly minted aces. You can see why the term 'ace factory' has been coined for Soerebaja.

Of course the whole point of the expensive exercise has been the capture of a port in Java, and this the Japanese manage. Despite the hits to their transports, the Japanese get some forces ashore and easily sweep aside the airfield unit that is their only opposition.

The Japanese muster 197 AV, less than half of what you'd expect from the Imperial Guards Division and 21st Infantry Regiment. They have been hit hard, but not hard enough.

What is going to be critical to how much further they can go is how much supply they have landed. Kalidjati has a port size of 1, so putting in more supply is not going to be a simple matter once the Japanese have lost their unload bonus. Our bombers will go to work to make it even more difficult.

we have discovered where the Japanese subs are - the Torres Straits. Poor old DD Lamson sucks up a torp from SS RO-64. But she has done her job, which is keeping the subs away from the Enterprise. Amazingly, she is still going, with 89 flotation damage. She will beach at Horn Island in a desperate attempt to save her, but the chances seem low.

The oilers, closely following the carriers, also come under sub attack but their destroyer escorts manage to keep them out of harm's way.

Dutch subs show how it should be done.

At long last. Mike has flooded the area around Kalidjati with subs, and is finally rewarded for his diligence.

Kalidjati must have had bad weather, because our sweeps and airfield strikes fail to fly. Which is a pity, because it gives him another turn to repair the airfield and fly in some fighter cover.

The only land action is in China, where the pursuit of the Japanese forces near Lanchow continues. We finally manage to kill off a unit. We're going to keep going here, why let up when we have him on the ropes.

When I say Mike has flooded the area with subs, this is what I mean. What amazes me is that it has taken this long to get a torp in.

Don't get victory disease at Lanchow/Ningsia. I know the Ching An Tui brigades are extremely poor quality Chinese troops with little equipment and very little of their TOE filled out at start. I suspect the Independent Inf. Rgts. are also Chinese units aligned with Japan and lacking heavy weapons, only marginally better than the Ching An Tui brigades.

If he brings real IJA units up it will get much tougher but I agree with trying to wipe out those units if they are isolated.

They look pretty isolated. I still have a unit on the road leading north, so should get early warning of any approaching reinforcements. The key thing is not to push so far forward that I end up like him, in a position where my supply lines are over extended.

The really weird thing about the last turn is that Mike initially had no idea that his subs had finally struck home against a carrier. Despite watching the same replay, his did not show the sub attack against CVL Nisshin. It was only when he sent off the turn and had still not issued his trademark cry of 'Banzai!' that I queried him and found he hadn't seen the shot. When we compared combat report text files, there it was.

So, for the sake of posterity, here is the big moment.

March 31-April 1, 1942

Ah, the arrival of April, a much awaited event for the Allies. Not only does Japan lose its unload bonus, we also get access to all those radar, ASW and AA upgrades. Okay, so we have to take a bunch of ships off the line for 2-3 weeks. It is so worth it.

Our carriers are now hanging out south of Java, waiting for an opportunity to strike. We only have Indomitable and Yorktown there, plus a lot of light carriers. Enterprise has topped up at Darwin and is speeding to join the force. Saratoga and Lexington will join with Hornet when she reaches Auckland, to make up the southern carrier force.

Normally I wouldn't split the carriers, but the opportunity to hammer the Java invasion was just too tempting. In the end the carriers arrived a few days too late, and were not needed.

Speaking of the Java invasion, it looks like Japanese troops are marching southeast from Kalidjati, doubtless aiming for the large port of Semarang. We're going to do our best to stop them with what Dutch troops we have to hand. Around 400 AV is in their path, two regiments of KNIL infantry plus various other bits and pieces. Hopefully with some bombing support it will be enough.

Speaking of bombing, our Dutch bombers continue to pound the Kalidjati airfield and the troops there, trying to slow down their movement. The Banshees, topped up with new planes and pilots, get back in the fray and hit the Kalidjati port to try catch any damaged merchants that may have docked. The outcome is quite a surprise.

I was hoping to pick off one or two damaged AKs. The fact that we found 5-6 destroyers lined up like sitting ducks was something of a bonus.

Japan gets better DDs in this mod vs stock. They get less of the late war DDs (28 knots) and more of the 1st gen DDs in the latest version that I'm playing and John has. Hope you can sink a few, if not all.

I hate Japanese DDs, and would love to sink every single one. Their habit of putting Long Lances into the sides of ships much bigger than them is quite distressing. PoW is still in Cape Town fixing up from a single Long Lance hit on the second night of the war.

Mr Fletcher start to dribble in Aug/Sept '42, but be careful with the '42 versions as they have poor experience levels compared to those coming out in '43.

If you don't lose too many of the American pre-war DDs, you have the luxury of setting up roving SC TFs made up of Fletchers. Able to go around 12 hexes at Full Speed is a good thing to have.

You, guys are doing a good job. I have also seen that he doesn't fly escort with his carrier bombers. I set a trap for them last turn, a small one. I'm enjoying this AAR.

It's a bit bizarre really, because it makes his carrier strikes terribly ineffective and expensive. Just this turn we jumped 12 Vals over Kalidjati and wiped them out. It's great for my pilot training though. Check out this Dutch fighter unit, these boys are hard as nails. Never thought I'd see Dutch pilots with these sort of stats.

A few of those guys have poor defensive skills. If you get a chance to let the unit train on Strafe at 100', their defensive skill will rise rapidly. Some people micro-manage their pilots and will move the ones needing specific skills to a rear area unit to train, then bring them back when they are ready.

I am one of those micromanagers, although not with the Dutch. My US pilots, for example, go through three stages of training before they get to the front lines. They fly escort to get air skill to 70, sweep at 100 feet to get their defense to 60, then fly 100 percent CAP at zero range to get their experience to 60. At that point they are considered ready for the big time. I am just getting to the point where I am stripping the guys who don't meet these criteria out of front line units.

One of the big changes for this mod is the training squadrons, which means you don't have to tie up as many squadrons in the rear trying to get your pilots up to speed.

April 2, 1942

Our aircraft continue to hammer away at Kalidjati, knocking the troops, port and base. We do 187 troop casualties, which is not a huge amount but every little bit helps. We also find that his ships remain in port, despite the hammering they took last round.

Worried that he may have mined Kalidjati to protect it from our subs, we send a group of Dutch coastal minesweepers to clear the place. While they don't find any mines, they are found by a group of Vals. Unfortunately for the Vals they forgot to bring along any escorts, and are promptly demolished by the waiting fighters.

The Dutch are actually looking pretty scary. As well as now having decent fighter pilots, they are also starting to get serious numbers of aircraft reinforcements. For fighters they get 18 P-40Es and 12 Hurricane IIbs, and for bombers 25 Mitchells. That is not to be sneezed at. The US only get around 75 fighters and 40 two-engine bombers a month at this stage.

Probably the most exciting thing this turn though is a report that enemy ship CVL Nisshin has been sunk. Did that one torp do for her?

Ships hit by torpedo or mine are ALWAYS reported sunk on the sunk ships list - until they aren't!

A sad moment. Our opponent Bill has had to call the game for personal reasons.

It was a blast. The great support from players far more experienced than myself or Mike was vastly appreciated. It made it so much more fun to know we had all these great players looking over our shoulders and prepared to chip in with some friendly advice.

The Mike and Mike show does not end here though. We have discussed for some time the prospect of a game as Japan. Give us some time to psyche ourselves up and we'll back in the fray.
