Sea Patrol mission is set in the area of unknown surface contacts.
4 F-4E (Gladiator #) and one ship are assigned to it.
Mission speed options for A/C:
Transit: Cruise
Attack: AB
Attack dist.:20 nm

For ship:
Transit: Cruise
Attack: not set
Attack dist.:40 nm

A/Cs and the ship are about 200nm from contacts.

A/Cs and the ship totally ignore mission speed settings, flying/sailing at Full speed. I was expecting them to move at Transit speed until they get close (20-40nm) to the contacts.

That's because the units are "engaged offensive", which means they're trying to intercept/attack the targets. So transit parameters don't apply (they're not transiting to the patrol area). However, I tried to change the "attack" speed setting to cruise, but they still go full speed. I guess "engaged offensive" isn't the same as "attack"?

AFAIK the whole idea of the "attack dist." option was to allow a/c to use Transit speed when it was far away from the target. I saw it working as intended: A/C used Transit speed and alt until it got within "attack dist." (status was "Engaging" too), then it switched to Attack speed and alt. It usually works ok when A/Cs assigned to a mission are initially at an air base. However in this case it was acting weird. I am supprised that no one reported this issue before. Nobody uses mission attack options? I find these attack options the only way to order my units to land attack targets without boring micromanagment, because strike missions do not allow you to set minimum flight alt. Thus strike missions IMO are useful only for most simple tasks.

I think User2 is right. And I played around with this scenario a bit and recognized that ships and A/C behave differently.

When "Ignore plotted course" is set to "No", Ships obey a manually plotted course, yes they even obey the by mission requested transit throttle.

But A/C ignore everything as soon as they have detected an unfriendly or hostile unit in the patrol area. So for A/C you really have to micromange the unit, if you want for example to fly around a threat between the current position and the patrol area.

Thanks, fixed the aircraft issue. The reason ships don't follow your orders is because the Attack Throttle isn't set.

Great thanks.

Hm, I don't see any difference whether the Attack Throttle is set or not except that the speed is changed at Attack Distance when Attack Throttle is set. Do I miss someting?

Setting Attack throttle for a ship works fine: ship is sailing at Transit speed to the target, then switches to Attack speed. I actually noticed it too before reporting A/C issue, just expected it to select speed on its own (like "Auto" speed). However it is not a big deal, not hard to set all the ship speed options in the mission editor.
