DDG 1000 Zumwalt – 2025 Hypervelocity Projectiles?
Is it my imagination but if this ship works in real life as it does in this game, shouldn’t the US Navy be rolling these out by the dozen?

Best I can tell no aircraft can survive within its Hypervelocity firing arc for very long and if it has a full magazine of anti air missiles, it’s very tough to antiship missile to the bottom of whatever water it’s sailing.

And against another ship? Replace the weapon loads of 109x with the new LRASM, use off ship targeting of some type to stay passive and let fly.

I realize it’s absurdly spendy but if it could also operate sub free zone (not likely), wouldn’t it dominate the oceans?

Or is it not as capable as it is in the game?

Thoughts?

It remains to be seen exactly how capable the Zumwalt and those weapons will be, but that is likely pretty close against an enemy with purchased Russian/Chinese kit. Against a peer adversary the electronic warfare variables will likely alter the balance a bit, but weapons today are extremely lethal, and the Zumwalt is a cutting edge weapons/sensor platform. I live right across the river from where they're being built so I see them much more often then many, and it's still quite a sight to see.

I did not try it because I'm more interested in operational weapon systems. However, looked at the mount and the projectile itself in the ingame DB viewer and an image came to my mind:

SpecOps team on the shore, DDG Zumwalt 70nm away from them in the sea, EMCON A.
SpecOps: This is Bravo one, do you hear me?
DDG: Roger, Bravo one, this is Phenix two.
Bravo1: Have a visual contact with an enemy airplane. Looks like fighter jet. My position is N31.33 E31.06. Do you copy?
Phenix2: Roger, Bravo one.
Bravo1: The enemy fighter's flying north-north-west. About 3000-5000m above the ground. Horizontal distance is about 2000m south-east from my position.
Phenix2: Got you, Bravo one. Continue tracking target postion.
Bravo1: Flying over me, altitude and direction are the same. Subsonic speed.
Phenix2: Roger. Aiming at the pilot's right eye. Continue tracking.
Bravo1: The target is about 1500m north-west from my position, ascendi... Holly cow! You hit it straight into the pilot's right eye while it was performing Pugachev's Cobra at afterburn throttle! Nice job!

It seems that's how it is currently modeled it the game. No sensors onboard - no terminal guidance. Only downlink with INS/GPS guidance mid-course. No engines - only initial kinetic energy. Thus it should have hard time against targets perfoming high-g maneuvers. Still 90% Pok? Very arguably in my opinion.

UPD: Just tried it. 6000kts (~9M) initial speed? Here is a statement from official "Congressional Research Service" paper: "When fired from 5-inch powder guns, the projectile achieves a speed of roughly Mach 3, which is roughly half the speed it achieves when fired from EMRG, but more than twice the speed of a conventional 5-inch shell fired from a 5-inch gun"

First we ask for weapons that don't or sorta exist. Then when the devs deliver on it we bellyache on how it was done. What a black hole of major suckage.

If you folks can put together CMANO stats on how you think it should work it would be helpful and save a few hours of yoga and peaceful mindfulness.

I think one of a issue I need to address is the railgun round in Mach >5 might be too fast to stay on the same elevation, it will go up instead of skimming because of the earth curvature.

In 2020s, I believe some railgun-researching countries will try to develop sea-skimming railgun round, that looks like a hypersonic glider when fully expanded. Given with steering and OTH guidance, that rounds would be total nightmare for every ships, regardless of the method of interceptions.

No bellyaching from these quarters, in fact I like Hypoweapons to edit into a "real world" scenario when an opponent is a little big for its britches, evening the odds if you would.

I’d still love to bring modern weapons into the cold war era but that’s a wish that only you guys can know if it will every come to fruition. Thanks and keep up the good work!

Mike, you're taking it too seriously as usual. Most of us knew that there is not much to model, just a wild guess.

Dysta, HVP is not about railgun. It is about old style gun using projectile originally developed for a railgun. It is stated that HVP speed is about 3M. Railgun will be able to accelarate it to 6M and higher. However it is still less than first cosmic speed (7.91 km/s). Thus HVP fired parallel to the surface will not ascend about the ground.

Throw all the digs you want but still need stats to do anything with it.

Thanks!

Mike
