• At Urumchi, one of the two enemy units has pulled out back on the road they both arrived on. Perhaps our encirclement maneuver (long from fruition) is anticipated or perhaps that unit is needed to secure bases left without garrison in the path of our monster base force rampaging through the outback.

India, Burma, Thailand, Indochina
• And so it begins.
quote:

Night Naval bombardment of Akyab at 54,45

Japanese Ships
DD Yugiri
DD Asagiri

Airbase hits 4
Runway hits 13
Port hits 6
Port supply hits 1

DD Yugiri firing at Akyab
DD Asagiri firing at Akyab

A few days ago sub Trusty was detected but it was clearly not IJN carriers as they were spotted in the Java Sea. The IJN will likely stay close to air cover from Rangoon until carriers are assigned to the Indian Ocean.

Japan, Korea, Manchuria, Russia
• 7 subs on station, no contacts.

Complete combat report attached.

1942 March 20

INVADED
Amphibious TF 20 offshore of Soebi-besar
Batavia, Tjilatjap, Samarinda, Ketapang, Urumchi, Changsha, Lanchow, Kungchang, Meiktila are also invested.

CHANGED OWNERSHIP

Overall
• KB1 is 2 hexes west of Singkawang and Pontianak. Apparently heading for Singapore.

• The amphibious bonus is documented as (paraphrasing) 'the first 4 months', and I have never been clear on whether it ends after the 31 March 1942 turn or after the 6 April 1942 turn. I always see people refer to April 1 and assuming that is true there are 11 turns remaining with the bonus. That isn't much, but I wonder if the Empire might be thinking about picking up a bunch of divisions resting at Singapore and dropping them on Ceylon? Or at Chittagong?

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii
• Quiet except for mundane things.

Pacific
• Fuel still unloading at Pago Pago. A troop convoy will arrive in two days. After that convoy departs we will reconfigure the fuel/supply convoy for faster unloading of the remaining fuel.

• Subs near Suva. A small supply convoy from Pago Pago made a big detour to approach Nadi from the west to avoid the Imperial subs.

New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, New Hebrides, Solomons, Papua New Guinea, New Britain
• Building, upgrading, supplying, etc.

Philippines
• Still no attack - waiting for friends or recovering disruption.

• Currently these two units have no retreat path.

• The only shipping in sight are small warships at Kalidjati. All Dutch subs are ordered to Colombo. All US subs are ordered to Brisbane.

China
• The lead western infiltrator is now blocked albeit by a weak unit. Help is on the way but the enemy will surely cross the river first and will have to be expelled. Hopefully our unit is spotted and the crossing aborted.

India, Burma, Thailand, Indochina
• With KB1 heading to Singapore the next stop might be Ceylon. The Bay of Bengal is being evacuated except for some ships which will shelter under the defenses of Calcutta. The fleet will leave Colombo and head toward Bombay, basing there but remaining in striking range. Fighters are being redeployed. The USA pilots are not adequately trained and are being swapped out for the best in the reserve. The P-38E squadron is being upgraded to P-400's but it has to transfer to Calcutta first.

Japan, Korea, Manchuria, Russia
• 7 subs on station, no contacts.

Complete combat report attached.

The Amphib bonus does expire on April 1st, not the full four months.

OK, so it's the eleven days... any bets on how he uses them?

The last map of Java showed a lot of Allied bases left, but he can land troops at places he already controls and march overland. I think he will go for Babar or other islands near Darwin to get his bombers within range.

So all of Timor and the base at Ambon work for that. KB1 isn't needed for that but small carriers would be required to CAP an invasion of Timor. Ambon he might be able to CAP with fighters by now, not sure.

That would still leave KB1 available...

Japanese forces CAPTURE Tandjoengpinang !!!

Overall
• No carrier sightings.

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii
• Quiet.

Pacific
• The troop convoy at Pago Pago has only some large devices to unload for one unit plus supply from two other ships. The fuel/supply convoy still has much fuel to unload. Stacking at Pago Pago is 35,000 plus a little versus limit of 35,000, so pretty well perfect.

New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, New Hebrides, Solomons, Papua New Guinea, New Britain
• Quiet.

Philippines
• Supply shortage at Cebu so bombardments are ordered stopped.

DEI, Dutch new Guinea, Borneo, Malaya
• How long will Batavia hold?

• It is possible Zero's are operating from Balikpapan but we have not detected them. Both P-40E squadrons, 5 planes ready, have flown to Bandjermasin and will fly escort for strikes on Balikpapan Oil by B-25C's from Soerabaja, DB-7B's from Samarinda, and CW-22 Falcon's from Samarinda. Samarinda is in imminent danger of falling so those squadrons might only get tomorrow to try their luck. Rain is predicted but maybe that will shield our bombers from CAP.

China
• I think we got in front of the western infiltration in time.

• We are slowly withdrawing out of Sian cross country to the west and into Sian from the road position to the south. How much we will withdraw how soon is unclear.

India, Burma, Thailand, Indochina
• 26th Indian Division has arrived at Madras. Very low experience and preparation but a large, filled out unit.

• We have more squadrons of transports at Ledo flying supply into Paoshan but there are still limited planes on hand.

Japan, Korea, Manchuria, Russia
• 3 subs on station, no contacts.

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii
• Quiet. It's possible sub losses have caused the Empire to reduce subs assigned to the West Coast in favor of other areas. We have seen subs near Hawaii in the recent past, but no farther east for some time. I'm sure there will be appearances off the West Coast to keep us guessing.

Pacific
• Enemy sub near Suva.

• The troop convoy have finished unloading at Pago Pago.

New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, New Hebrides, Solomons, Papua New Guinea, New Britain
• Enemy sub near Sydney.

Philippines
• No change.

DEI, Dutch new Guinea, Borneo, Malaya
• Our B-25's attacked Balikpapan Oil but were intercepted by Zero's and made no hits. The fighters from Bandjermasin and the bombers from Samarinda did not fly, possibly due to the rubbish weather over the region.

• Samarinda defenses show surprising strength.

• The Empire continues to both infiltrate and grind away at strong points.

India, Burma, Thailand, Indochina
• CV Formidable has appeared on map and is diverting to Bombay to meet the fleet there as Colombo is considered unsafe.

• Suddenly numerous additional Imperial units make their appearance. The brigands which overran Meiktila are now at Manadalay and another unit is approaching Meiktila. Two other units are racing toward Magwe from the south, clearly up to no good. Defenders at Magwe are being smashed from the air every day and they have nary a tree to hide behind.

Was it Custer, 7th Michigan Calvary at Gettysburg? I've tried to walk that portion of the field but
times have dramatically changed the landscape and I got no real feel for it. As a high school student
I always wanted to see the Black Hills battlefield but never could make it happen. There was a very
interesting documentary on it though. Apparently there were still hundreds of cartridges around
and they were able to make a thorough path of events from them. Really fascinating from my perspective.

I think the HMG's and 107mm mortars would make a big difference.

No arguments. I was hoping my game would keep pace with yours, but this will not be the case.
Over a month behind now and it will not be long before comparisons with Japanese moves becomes
more retrospective. I am enjoying the AAR and find some interesting comparisons and parallels
to apply to my current dilemma as it is.

• Our intrepid PT boats are only two and heavily damaged but still sortie in strong moonlight against IJN destroyers at Kalidjati. The bombers from Samarinda flew against Balikpapan Oil but the Falcon's were nearly wiped out (7 of 9 lost) and the DB-7B's missed after bloodying their way through the CAP. Interestingly, "bloodying" passes spell checker. The world wonders. Calalina's attacked shipping at Balkpapan but those attempts to overwhelm the CAP failed. More Falcon's flown in for tomorrow. More P-40E flown into Bandjermasin, but the few there already did not fly today, possibly due to weather.

China

• The westernmost infiltrator appears to be either still moving or moving again. In two days we will have a strong unit join the first, weak blocker.

• Maneuvering near Sian continues.

India, Burma, Thailand, Indochina
• Colombo fortifications are level 5.

• Our defenses in India feel credible though still spotty. Near the Burma border, and certainly the Arakan and near it is weak.

Japan, Korea, Manchuria, Russia
• 1 sub on station, no contacts.

We have our slow periods due to RL and you might put on a burst of turns here and there like we did last weekend. I guess the biggest problem is how games diverge. Even if contemporaneous it might be of little value to you at some point.

Sometimes seeing another situation can bring to mind another completely different tangent of thought. When you mentioned refitting
to the APDs, it did not remind me to do likewise but something in your report of that day or thereafter sparked an operational idea
I had never thought of before. Likewise the detail and timing of some of the landings triggered another thought about how to counter
these. Because the time frame was so close and our assets so similar you kinda planned for me. I have obviously copied, I hope there
are no infringement penalties, what I present to the reader, albeit with less commentary, what you choose reveal. By the way, thats
a Glen equipped sub by my estimate, looking for easy prey. Unfortunately there seem to be more heavily modded AARs out there now
and they don't interest me as much to read.

j & z:

This is an Open Source AAR (although it does use the Oxford Comma). No fees!

A Glen equipped sub to leave burning fuel out there is even better. I have a 4x KV group I could send but I will keep them close to Perth instead. The only traffic to and fro is gathering Resources from Port Hedland and sending Supply to Darwin. I also boosted Supply at Perth with a shipment from Adelaide because there was so little drawn in it was taking forever to load up for Darwin.

Interesting about the ideas. And we can't talk about them here because that would be an OpSec for your AAR, and we can't talk about them there because that would be an OpSec leak for my AAR. And we can't talk about them in PM or email because that would do away with the fun of vaguely alluding to them. Cool!

Overall
• No carrier sightings.

• For those keeping track of plans, the Marshall Islands invasion plan requires me to buy out one division and three regiments, so it will be a while. There are two independent regiments arriving soon that I might begin preparing as substitutes to shorten the time but they will still need to prepare.

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii
• The yards are busy.

Pacific
• Pago Pago fortifications now 4. Fuel unloading at Pago Pago. Supply finished unloading at Nadi.

New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, New Hebrides, Solomons, Papua New Guinea, New Britain
• A fake convoy of 2x KV and 2x xAK is being sent west from Perth to run over the location of that radio sighting yesterday. The convoy will veer south in a circle and return on a track which should be out of a subs air search range.

Philippines
• Waiting...

Very very coy.

I presume you are: (1) seeking to confirm a sub or (2) more importantly confirm the KB / Mini KB anticipating your fuel supply routes.

A couple low endurance Dutch xAKs ? The KVs have a decent shot to damage the sub (if that is what it is)

The question that begs to be asked:

You categorically state you are NOT running convoys this route !

So where are you running convoys ?

1) Only Continental USA to Australia via New Zealand ?

2) Hub and spoke to the aforementioned Pago Pago and or Suva ?

3) Capetown to Adelaide and thus further south?

4) Not hub and spoke from Columbo - because you emphatically state Columbo is not safe at the current time....

Hmmmmmm a new tactic we rookies have never contemplated ?

I 100% presume it is a sub or two. Does that mean I there is a 99.83% chance it's carriers?

A couple low endurance Dutch xAKs ? The KVs have a decent shot to damage the sub (if that is what it is)
Yeah, medium to low endurance. I have very limited shipping based at Perth and most of the merchants (both xAK and xAKL) are bringing Resources down from Port Hedland while that's possible. A couple of single xAK, with escorts, are running supplies to Darwin and other points on the coast as needed. I thought about waiting and grabbing a a couple of xAKL but I realized xAK will be much more convincing, I just hope he does not get a ship name and look up its endurance in the database. That's something Intel Monkey should provide as time goes on. The two KV are to be a credible looking escort, as the two xAK are to be a credible looking part of a convoy. Many (I think most) times subs only see part of a convoy. The KV's might damage a sub, but the real purpose of the operation is...

to convince him it is a convoy route so he keeps sending subs there.

The question that begs to be asked:

You categorically state you are NOT running convoys this route !
Correct. I made certain strategic decisions about convoys at the beginning of the game. Partly I did it this way to avoid predictability. Adjustments and exceptions will be made as and if genuinely needed of course.

The only item routinely sent from the western Indian Ocean to the eastern Indian Ocean is Oil from Abadan to Australia. One smallish tanker at a time is all required because the Oil accumulates very slowly at Abadan.

So where are you running convoys ?
Here I will only answer for places you do not specifically ask about below (those are answered below).
I do not use the Auto Convoy system. I do use CS convoys plenty, and coupled with waypoints (which they do allow) they are pretty flexible.

Convoys to northern Pacific areas are sent as needed and pretty much route directly.

CS convoys are set up for Pearl Harbor and use waypoints to circumvent the obvious direct routes and known submarine hunting grounds to the extend possible. Convoys to Midway and islands closer to Hawaii than to Pago Pago are sent from Pearl Harbor as needed. Also Christmas Island, Palmyra, and Canton Island have benefited from many single xAK which arrived at the Panama Canal, loaded, made the direct run, then headed to Pearl Harbor all without escort.

In all cases troop and aircraft convoys run when, where, and by routes as needed.

1) Only Continental USA to Australia via New Zealand ?
Yes. With the exception noted above (Abadan Oil) no external convoys to Australia/New Zealand from the west, only from the east, meaning from the US West Coast.

2) Hub and spoke to the aforementioned Pago Pago and or Suva ?
Yes, to a point. Pago Pago is distributing Supply to some places but the amounts are pretty small as the forces present are pretty small except for Fiji. Fiji has maybe 35 or 40k Supply most of which either loaded at or routed on ships through Pago Pago.

3) Capetown to Adelaide and thus further south?
Nope. None of that, but I hope thousands of sub-days are spent looking there!

Currently all Supply and Fuel convoys (often combined) run from the West Coast direct to New Zealand and Australia, all hand-routed with waypoints. Adjustments are made en route as needed. Auckland was avoided as a destination early on because of subs. Any place northeast of Melbourne is avoided same. Melbourne has been avoided by some convoys which continued to Adelaide due to subs near Melbourne.

4) Not hub and spoke from Columbo - because you emphatically state Columbo is not safe at the current time....
Colombo is a destination. Convoys are still running from Cape Town to Colombo and from Bombay and Abadan to Colombo and will continue as long as possible.

Lots of CS convoys run from Abadan to Karachi and a few to Bombay and Colombo. Some CS convoys from Aden to Bombay/Karachi (Aden gets very little Supply).

Hmmmmmm a new tactic we rookies have never contemplated ?
Don't know about that. I assume if you sat down to analyze it you could come up with many improvements.
