The turn before and during the invasion, you should consider using your float planes for recon. Night recon as well to increase the D/L.

Also consider reconning other bases in the area to see what is there and to keep your opponent guessing.

The groups on the battleships which conduct bombardments will do recon; that makes them "spot" for the ship's fire. I know you only have to set the group to Recon, I'm not sure if day/night mission matters. I'll find out by keeping them on day missions, which will also give them the best actual recon performance on the base. Good point about helping ground combat with the recon.

I've got real recon groups trained up and they can move in to recon the second wave targets after the fact (after base forces land, etc).

When they bombard at night, they need a night recon place for the best effectiveness. The D/L is then carried over for the daylight phase. The same thing for naval search planes. That is why I like to use the Hudson III for search, it has Radar.

For naval reaction, a night search can find the enemy task force so your task force knows where it is. It is really terrible for the Royal Navy when the POW surprises the Zuikaku by putting four 14" shells into her side. It really hurts the RN reputation for fighting fair.

Night recon it will be then for the BB bombardments. Walter has some busy times coming up so turns will be slow for the next 3+ weeks. Slow motion lightning operation!

Does this refer to an actual AAR report? I scanned this AAR and could not find anything like that, but would love to see such a coup!

In one of my games against the AI computer, Force Z (augmented with CLs) sailed through the Makasser Straight into the Celebes Sea and encountered the Soryu and the Zuikaku. The first four 14" shots from the POW surprised the Japanese fleet by hitting the Zuikaku. Radar saw the Jap fleet at 18,000 yards and the POW opened fire at 13,000. So it can happen. Night search can find the enemy ships and the surface combat force can then react towards it.

Very nice start to the battle! Glad to know someone can get the great dice rolls!

The FP doing recon need to be set to the phase the bombardment will be in to spot for the bombardments. The cumulative DL of daily recon will help in all ways throughout the battle though.

I just did a bombardment of Chittagong filled with aircraft. I thought they would go in during the night phase so all my FPs were set to night recon of Chittagong. They fooled me and didn't bombard until the daylight phase and all the ships were not aided by FP recon. However, it looked very effective anyways because I am sure their superior optics and daylight were working in their benefit.

Daytime bombardments are more effective usually, and they're often aided by recon (DL increases) from other sources. I like them as it usually shuts the field for the day anyway, but you have to make sure you get there in the early phase or the active airbase can hit you before the bombardment goes in.

When a TF gets there during night phase but doesn't start bombarding until daytime, I think it is because the D/L on the target was too low at that point. If some recon took place at night to raise the D/L or recon/bombing during the day before the bombardment step, then the TF will start shooting.

At one point I thought is was because all the Ops points got used up moving to the target hex on the night phase, but someone (Loka, I think) showed me that bombardment/battle can still take place after the movement phase uses up the Ops points.

That is the best way to get a daytime bombardment, but occasionally things work out that the TF arrives and bombards in daylight.
If I am not concerned about enemy counterattack I usually do send in the TF at night and have it remain on station so it bombards in both phases if the DL is good enough. To that end I set the FP of the first bombarding ship to night recon, no target, set another FP to night recon with a target of the hex being bombarded, and the same in daytime for a couple of FPs. Other FPs can do night and day search or ASW as the situation requires.

They were not set to remain on station and during the daylight bombardment no ships had planes spotting, which I assumed was because all the FP recon was set for the night recon. I did face daytime airstrikes but I had the mini-KB in support and though the CAP trailing by one hex didn't stop the attacks, I am sure they cause enough disruption to the airstrikes and they were level bombers probably not trained in naval attacks to a high degree.

The light (readL old) CL TF at Geraldton is moving to a staging area far west and a little norht of Exmouth. Fleet oiler Kurumba is positioning near Albany in case they need to sprint and refuel. If there are light carrier forces in support of the enemy's Port Hedland operation the cruiser group just might get an opportunity to get behind them if they are making to round the corner toward Perth.

A nice haul of Betties. I like the P-39 as a defensive fighter, especially against bombers. I remember reading about a P-39 at Guadalcanal that hit a Zero with the 37mm - the Zero disintegrated.

As far as Sian in concerned, are any of the really trashed units trying to move out? In reserve mode, if I recall correctly, they won't even participate in the fight unless they are really needed.

No, nothing is moving and all are in combat mode as of the turn enemy units arrived. It's tanks, tanks, baby!

Don't worry, they will get experience - or die trying. I found that tankers always need someone around to tell them where the enemy is and who to shoot at.

• Rabaul airfield is now size 6.

Hmm did I miss something along the way? - this slipped in here and I don't recall much notice of it.

Are you suggesting through IntelMonkey or some other means you know Rabul is AFbase 6 for the Japanese?

Or are you telling us you have developed Rabul to 6 ?

We have chatted - you have posted.....

1) Strategically not completing the traditional "slog" through the Solomons in favor of other approaches

2) The invasion of Australia

3) The action around Port Moresby....

Do you actually own Rabul ?

The ops report includes airfield and port upgrades for both sides. Forts only for your own guys though.
