BTW, are you thinking about that paratrooper attack? I could send you a pm with a combat report but I hesitate to post it in your AAR as some people might get confused.

No need for proofs or anything..

I am following AAR and I seemed to have simply missed the point the Allies still control Rabual ??

If so quite a 'tour de force' and given its development potential a significant threat (onwards) to Truk and the Mariana's etc etc

If I have it all wrong ....oops ignore this poster

It's only June 1942 in game so Rabaul's ownership is very much in doubt. I think the Japanese are settling other accounts before they get serious at Rabaul.

Yes I truly realize its early....

But then I recalled this post below.... Hope the Pic shows up.

If the Allies Control Rabaul.....

Well congrats Witpqs ... I would consider this a decisive strategic oversite on the part of your honorable opponent.

If you have been able to beef it up with more troops.... AF6 ...

Truk is open to bombing
Hollandia and the Northern cost of New Guinea is open to attack by staging.
The possibilities are endless... my head is swimming.

Hence the comment caught me off guard - I thought the issue was closed.

My money is on this being four IJN fleet carriers, not five.

Does this level of strength here signify concern the USN carriers might intervene in Imperial operations here, or does it signify a major, early Imperial operation in this area?

The ops report includes airfield and port upgrades for both sides. Forts only for your own guys though.

What he said!

Which adds another item to the meta game. Your opponent might have no idea who are operating in a certain area; one day you see a base expansion message in the Operations Report...

Technically, all bases belong to me. The Empire is just borrowing some.

He took Rabaul ages and ages ago in the very early going; you might want to double up on the coffee.

I have the turn and am working it. Walter will not be available for another until at least Sunday so I will keep this until maybe tomorrow night so I can go through pilot training and whatever else I have been forgetting.

With the turn open it's easy to respond to special requests for information...

INVADED
Katherine, Changsha, Sian are invested.

CHANGED OWNERSHIP

Overall
• No carrier sightings.

• Damn.
quote:

Previous report of sinking of CL Kashima incorrect. Intelligence reports ship is still in service

• More convoy traffic in the Cantankerous Olfactory area.

• A good day for arrivals: BB North Carolina; CA Quincy; 3rd USMC Division; some smaller units.

• We spent hundreds of PP today buying out bomber squadrons the US which 1) do not withdraw, and 2) will expand size in August. Doing it now should save us a few hundred points compared to buying them out little by little after they expand. That plus replacing various USN ships' captains has consumed almost all our accumulated PP.

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii
• Enemy sub activity near Pearl Harbor, 12 hexes SW PH (by ASW TF pursuing), Lihue. So there are at least two different sub TF's hunting and conducting surveillance near the Hawaiian Islands. 7 new ASW TF's (3x DD each) have formed to find the Imperials, all with recently upgraded destroyers!

• All convoys report no contacts.

Pacific
• Enemy sub activity near Nanumea, Pago Pago, Vaitupu

• I think it's the aiming equipment.

• Finally we see another Imperial ground unit (courtesy RDF), but not where we expect. An unidentified formation is on the road 3 hexes east of Nookanbah. Best guess is yet another reinforcement while other units are farther ahead but yet to be seen.

• The same supply problems pertain.

• Probably in two days the 8th Cav Recce Rgt will get to Katherine. With Exp 70 they will attack the enemy unit along with the Exp 35 armoured unit.

• All convoys report no contacts.

• In the coming days - weather dependent - we will transfer several squadrons of B-17's from Hawaii to Australia. In Hawaii they serve a defensive purpose which is surplus at the moment; the Marshall Islands bases will not be able to support them for a long time even if all goes well; in Australia they will be boost our striking power against the invaders significantly; they will increase our ability to attrite the Empire's deployed carrier fighter squadrons; they will possibly signal to the Empire an increased commitment on our part in Australia. In three hops they will be in Cloncurry (Pago Pago > Brisbane > Cloncurry) but weather over Pago Pago prevents them departing Pearl Harbor today.

INVADED
Amphibious TF 50 offshore of Tockangbesi-eilanden£i®í
Katherine, Changsha, Sian are invested.

CHANGED OWNERSHIP
Damar is occupied by the Japanese

Overall
• No carrier sightings.

• Upgraded several Sqns of USMC fighters to Wildcats so they can ship aboard the carriers. The four best Sqns have Wildcats; the other USMC fighters at PH have Buffaloes. Wasp cannot take a squadron but the other five fleet carriers can and so can Long Island, although I have not decided what kind of aircraft she will carry/ferry.

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii
• Enemy sub activity near Pearl Harbor.

• Enemy surface activity near Johnston Island. As yesterday, currently 1x PB sighted 8 hexes south of Johnston Island. It is also possible there is a float plane equipped submarine operating with the PB.

• All convoys report no contacts.

• Pearl Harbor continues to undergo enemy reconnaissance and our numerous ASW TF and search plus ASW aircraft are not able to make contact. DL today is 2/2. Where could they be? We are forming 2 more ASW TF (2x DD each) to fill in a couple of gaps in our ASW TF coverage, but we have no gaps in our search coverage. What is the maximum range of those Japanese submarine-capable float planes?

• Our APD's sailed peacefully away from air search which might have been due to that "PB" south of Johnston Island and the PB has hardly moved if at all. The CL group has altered course to overrun the hex where the PB is now sighted.

• We now have one additional AK and AP at Pearl Harbor as they arrived in company of a CLAA and two destroyers.

Pacific
• All convoys report no contacts.

New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, New Hebrides, Solomons, Papua New Guinea, New Britain
• Enemy sub activity near Sydney, Duff Islands.

• All convoys report no contacts.

• No aircraft losses over Katherine today.
quote:

Morning Air attack on 47th Infantry Regiment, at 76,128 (Katherine)

Weather in hex: Thunderstorms

Raid spotted at 20 NM, estimated altitude 8,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 6 minutes

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 1

Allied aircraft
B-17E Fortress x 22

No Japanese losses

No Allied losses

Japanese ground losses:
140 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 13 disabled
Non Combat: 1 destroyed, 6 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

Aircraft Attacking:
4 x B-17E Fortress bombing from 5000 feet
Ground Attack: 8 x 500 lb GP Bomb
3 x B-17E Fortress bombing from 5000 feet
Ground Attack: 8 x 500 lb GP Bomb
5 x B-17E Fortress bombing from 5000 feet
Ground Attack: 8 x 500 lb GP Bomb
5 x B-17E Fortress bombing from 5000 feet

3 x B-17E Fortress bombing from 5000 feet
Ground Attack: 8 x 500 lb GP Bomb
2 x B-17E Fortress bombing from 5000 feet
Ground Attack: 8 x 500 lb GP Bomb

CAP engaged:
Tainan Ku S-1 Det B with A6M2 Zero (1 airborne, 0 on standby, 0 scrambling)
1 plane(s) intercepting now.
Group patrol altitude is 8000 , scrambling fighters between 0 and 8000.
Raid is overhead

• So our force on site is a match for the Imperials' current investment.

Ground combat at Katherine (76,128)

Attacking force 3174 troops, 26 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 141

Assaulting units:
8th Tank Regiment
47th Infantry Regiment

Defending units:
1st Tank Battalion
8th Cav Recce Regiment
19th Australian Battalion
Katherine RAAF Base Force

• Yet another LCU is seen 1 hex west of Katherine. Is this one the division seen much earlier near Derby?

• We took a chance on heavy rain at Brisbane and brought in all 4 squadrons of B-17's. 1 plane damaged; none lost. There are 2 stragglers at Pago Pago.

• No sightings near the Exmouth corner of Australia.

• It seems there is less attention being given to Brisbane by enemy subs lately and more to Sydney. We already moved a KV ASW rgoup there from Melbourne and will now move a squadron of USA A-24 Banshee dive bombers there too. They've been doing ASW work at Brisbane and can at least hit the water.

Here is a look at the Intel Monkey filters I used to get the information for Sian. Remember I then "Export"-ed the information displayed to a CSV file; edited the file in a nice text editor to quickly cut out the stuff I didn't want and add a tiny bit (the "-" characters) to get the list posted earlier.

I don't know the range of the float planes. But I do have a suggestion. If you have not done so, CAP/LRCAP every TF in the area with a few fighters at an altitude of 6k to 8k, they just might shoot the plane down.

As far as that raider is concerned, a few PBYs on Naval attack might be able to tell you what it is as well as drive it away.

Something that's been interesting to me is turn after turn the TF's at PH have never had a DL. Karachi, Bombay, SF, LA, Sydney, and so on all have some TF's get scanned. But not PH. I've been wondering if it's due to the sheer number of fighters on CAP duty there?

Anyhow, I'm not going to LRCAP all those ASW TF's. It's not practical to LRCAP the convoys coming and going, which you should read as "I'm too lazy to do that."

As far as that raider is concerned, a few PBYs on Naval attack might be able to tell you what it is as well as drive it away.
We should have a good look at it in no more than two turns. Which reminds me: I need to look at the CL's float planes and make sure they have proper orders.

Do you have the agreement about the correct planes on IJN subs?

Actually, you shouldn't have to CAP every ASW TF, just one in each area. But yes, it can get tedious.

The art of being lazy is not putting off 'til tomorrow what you can do today, the art of being lazy is not bothering to do it at all.

Yes, I think so. I mean: Walter takes care of that. Whatever it is.

The subs usually come with Glens. But could you imagine putting Rufes on them to fly CAP and shoot down PBYs in the middle of nowhere?

1942 June 25

INVADED
Katherine, Changsha, Sian are invested.

CHANGED OWNERSHIP
Tockangbesi-eilanden is occupied by the Japanese

Overall
• No carrier sightings. Squadron Hosho-1 seen in action over Katherine.

• 3 battleships at Pearl Harbor will be finished upgrades in 3 days, another in 5 days. North Carolina will be at Pearl Harbor in about 10 days. I am inclined to wait 3 or 5 days to load for Cantankerous Olfactory but will only wait 10 if circumstances dictate.

• The presence of the scout PB approaching Hawaiian waters is a bit curious. Is the Empire up to something or is this pure distraction? If they are up to something: what?

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii
• Enemy sub activity near San Francisco.

• Enemy surface activity near Johnston Island. The PB has moved ENE.

• All convoys report no contacts.

• The CL TF might intercept the PB tonight or tomorrow. Due to enemy movement today it will be overtaking the PB from astern. Only one CL has float planes (2 of them) and they are searching 100% during daylight.

• A second (old) CL TF has formed at Pearl Harbor to get in front of the intruder.

Pacific
• Enemy sub activity near Pago Pago, Suva.

• All convoys report no contacts.

• Got one!

• Enemy sub activity near Sydney

• All convoys report no contacts.

• Sydney port is now size 9; the airfield (8) will now build.

• A good raid on the tanks. 3x B-17's for 2x Zero's. They put two squadrons up today.

• Now 3 enemy units at Katherine but the strength and identity of the 3rd unit are unknown.

• The additional B-17 Sqns have finished their journey, flying from Brisbane to Cloncurry without losses. A few stragglers are still following.
