I agree that as the algorithms work geographical directions play no role. The goofiness is the units retreated away from any base to which they could trace a supply route. Any supply route. Urumchi is so far away there is no supply route there so don't count that.

Now look at the hex they were in and the hex they retreated to. The hex they were in could trace a supply route (or at least at whatever cutoff the retreat code uses) to Kienko. Through enemy contested hexes but with friendly forces all holding the relevant hex sides. All good.

What about the hex they retreated to? No way. No supply route - UNLESS the algorithm uses a *very* high cost cutoff. Because to trace a route to Kienko from the new hex requires going around a bunch of enemy units, some roads some cross-country between roads, cross country through two full mountain hexes, and finally along a road.

The answer to the "UNLESS" query I pose will be answered when the IJN catches up and attacks again. No retreat will mean the algorithm operates in two steps as I first described. A retreat will mean there is some long, long, long 'supply' path being traced to Kienko.

This is of no consequences, I am just curious.

This is at its heart a GG game, perhaps there is some rng involved when faced with hopeless situations.

Perhaps they were holding the map upside down? Run that away!!

that completely reminds me of escape and evasion training in the army. Let me state
first off I was not the one holding the map! nor was I in any way in charge of that
particular gaggle. Lets just say I would have opened the map BEFORE we escaped.

The path is rather straightforward, see picture. Supply can go through enemy just fine as long as hexsides are free.

What is more interesting Tienshui base (dot to the north-west of Sian) is not marked with Japanese hexside ownership. Which is strange, cause its color looks Japanese. Was it captured by flippage?

I thought one of those hex sides was his. That path makes more sense.

• The armoured car regiment has reached Katherine.

• It looks like our raid on Nookanbah netted some supply! The armoured Rgt topped up and there are 120 Supply at the base now. The Rgt has just pulled out so in the coming days the supply should flow to Katherine or Daly Waters.

Post 1003 had a line in the combat reports that I have never seen before:

Amazing stuff put in by the Devs.

Wouldn't it be faster for your tank unit to follow the road until they are past the rough terrain?

Game code selected route!

I've learned to trust it as the fastest. The The only time I override it is when I have some other reason, such as wanting the unit to stay on a road in case circumstances change rapidly.

Have the turn but RL is slowing me down.

6 hits on that pesky snooper sub near Hawaii. Four ASW TF's are pursuing it to recover the secret microfilm... oh wait.

The CL TF is still not spotted so a northward route angling down into the Marshall Islands will be our invasion route.

INVADED
Amphibious TF 99 offshore of Pagai-eilanden
Amphibious TF 253 offshore of Car Nicobar
Changsha, Mengtze, Urumchi are invested.

CHANGED OWNERSHIP
Japanese forces CAPTURE Darwin !!!

Overall
• No carrier sightings. Sqns Ryujo-1 and Chitose Ku S-1 sighted in action near Darwin.

• Troops are loading for operation Cantankerous Olfactory; I assume that will take a couple of days.

• We are short of destroyers for Op CO, but then again we are short of destroyers for everything and short of everything else for everything. Of course the ASW and Long Island groups will be recalled and reallocated before the fleet departs.

• Still being without any current word on the major IJN fleet carriers this operation will be as risky as it gets, with all the USN carriers, all the operational USN battleships, and nearly all of the USN cruisers and destroyers involved. Read your Fleet Tactics (by Wayne Hughes) about the contrast in the concept of reserves in land operations versus naval operations.

• The USA infantry squads are equipped as USA 41 Rifle Squad: 15 anti-armor, 22 anti-soft. The USMC infantry as USMC 42 Rifle Squad: 15 anti-armor, 23 anti-soft. The USMC Raiders as USMC Raider Squad: 15 anti-armor, 19 anti-soft.

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii
• Enemy sub activity near Kona, San Francisco, Lihue.

• All convoys report no contacts.

• One of four ASW TF's on the hunt.

The sub is still firmly sighted and four ASW TF's are pursuing, plus Long Island with her DB's on naval search and her strong destroyer protection screen in case the prey becomes the hunter.

Pacific
• Enemy sub activity near Suva.

• All convoys report no contacts.

• Our old CL TF is now on a line level with Pearl Harbor and has not been spotted at all so far as we know. They will return to Pearl Harbor to refuel, then join Op CO as northern outriders to warn against IJN strikes into withdrawing convoys.

New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, New Hebrides, Solomons, Papua New Guinea, New Britain
• Enemy sub activity near Sydney.

• All convoys report no contacts.

• Fuel unloading at Melbourne.

• SigInt pays off but escorts thwart the attack.

• Having caught some fleeting glimpses earlier, I am not surprised to now see an Imperial unit closing on Paoshan from the SW. Two hexes of mountainous cross country terrain I hope they run out of bullets quickly and then starve. We already have a unit moving from 4 hexes east of Kunming to Tsuyung, replacing the unit which marched to bolster defenses NW of Paoshan (where an Imperial Mixed Rgt is crossing the river). Another unit from east of Kunming is moving to Kunming. These Imperial movements are more than just part of increasing pressure across the board; they are aimed at undermining defenses in the mountains before Chinese units (soon to be) falling back from other areas can get there and dig in. Dastardly Imperials!

India, Burma, Thailand, Indochina
• Enemy sub activity near Karachi.

• British major fleet units are spotted by Imperial sub-based aerial recon. Our ships are there to allow a carrier to withdraw.

• The recent increase in size of Ledo airfield to size 8 has increased the daily supply land-draw cap to 1,100. Everything will help at this point so we can keep supply flowing into China.

• The 102nd RAF Base Force, ex-Lashio and which moved to Paoshan in the early going to aid fortification building, has finally crossed the Burma-China frontier deep in the mountains. Counting the hex they are in and their destination of Ledo, they must now cross MT, JR, Mtn, and Jg. They took this long route to avoid being sniped. BTW, anyone know the difference between terrain types MT and Mtn? So far as I know there is only one type of mountain terrain listed in the manual.

Japan, Korea, Manchuria, Russia

We may have found our approach vector for Cantankerous Olfactory: head to a latitude north of Johnston Island then turn west until close enough to the first two targets, Wotje and Maloelap, to make a run in to them.

Looks like a different person was typing in the description code for the Himalayas and the mountains bordering them. All the grey stone/snow covered mountains appear to have the Mtn descriptor while the ones labeled MT seem to have some variability in their artwork. Since the game engine would be using a numeric code for mountains, I doubt the difference matters.

well, yeah but the numeric descriptor is what points to either Mtn or MT, so I still wonder if the numeric codes resolve to anything different in other areas, like movement, combat, etc.

Might be harder to dig a latrine in mtn terrain ... but they can just go in the snow and let the archeologists be happy to find it in 1100 years.
