What do you think about Burma? You think the Empire will try something there? As part of my 'avoid auto-vic' vigilance I keep in mind a grab for major VP via an India adventure. A preliminary advance across the Burma-India frontier to tie up major Allied combat units there might be used to weaken defenses elsewhere.

In a scenario 2 style game, Japan can muster around 16 free divisions now and 20 by Jan...so pretty much they can do anything once.

Not scenario 2; how much different?

Good for you, I am a scenario one fan...

India is safe then., Japan simply lacks the supplies, fuel, oil, tanks and troops to do much.

We're using scenario 28-C, Da Big Babes with reduced cargo, et al capacities. Scenario one expanded in detail is a good way to think of it.

Good to know. We are both keen to play on after any auto-vic, but obviously in the spirit of things I will do all I can to avoid one on me anyway.

With Wargamr I am playing the same mod with reduced cargo, SL, but with a Dec 8th Start to avoid all the metagaming that goes into turn 1, and Asian Roads (an attempt to salvage China for the Allies).

Asian Roads didn't prevent China falling absurdly fast.

I think that's scenario 29-C, plus the Asian roads pwhex stuff added on top. Yeah, I heard the roads mod did not have the desired effects. It was worth a shot.

Support forces inbound to Noumea. The plan is they will unload and be ready to speed the unloading of the two divisions, which are at an undisclosed location awaiting the go signal (they will go one at a time).

Semi-strategic musing:

All 6 USN fleet carriers have ~21 day long upgrades in October 1942. Should we just do them all at once to have the fleet ready for late '42 action, or one at a time so there is a substantial carrier force ready to oppose landings at the likes of Pago Pago, Fiji, New Caledonia, and so on?

How much do you figure you need the extra AA power if you DO meet enemy air opposition?
How long until the next upgrade after that - would doing them singly run into the next upgrade?
Can you get away with a 3-3 split, or a 2-2-2 and be comfortable with the number of carriers you have available to take on the enemy?
How much LBA do you have to take care of the bases between P-P and New Caledonia?

All in all they are Very big upgrades. Lots of 40 mm's involved.

Early '43, but I am really concerned about battles by the end of '42/at the very beginning of '43 around auto-vic time.

Can you get away with a 3-3 split, or a 2-2-2 and be comfortable with the number of carriers you have available to take on the enemy?
What I'm struggling with is this: no attrition to the IJN carriers to speak of, so if I have 3 or 4 carriers ready is that even enough or does it have to be all 6?

How much LBA do you have to take care of the bases between P-P and New Caledonia?
Between those two the substantial one is Suva. Pretty well defended, good fortifications, and I suppose the DB squadrons (two, I think) from Pago Pago could transfer in then back out after a couple of strikes on an invading force.

Pago Pago is a hard target and should last a while. Noumea will quickly be a fairly hard target which should last a while (I will be sending large supply convoys there soon after the troops land so they arrive after the occupation is pretty well known).

Given your concerns about a concentrated KB and the need for AA, plus the last statements about LBA and other things hardening your SoPac bases, it sounds like upgrading all six is the way to go.

+1

I concur for what it is worth. I think the Allied AA can really turn the tide of any naval clash...and provide that little bit extra for stray land based attacks.

Interesting on the carrier upgrades....I have been doing them as soon as practical. On the other hand I need them
to bait/lure KB whenever possible to execute landings in different arenas. The whole thing about AV is just beginning
to set in for me, and its only July! I would not be worrying except for China. I did not take into account all the losses
I am taking there. I have some short 10 day upgrades underway now which should be perfect timing for my summer
OPs but I am unclear how I will/can execute the fall missions. I have never felt the lack of engineers in any other
game I have played until this one. There is so much to be expanded to get LBA up in the Pacific and Oz. Francois
most likely has a heads up what is built up and what lays fallow. I do feel that if I have planned properly it will not
matter as he cannot be three places at once with his flat tops.

Hmm to your earlier points:

i) Chittagong is under air attack and sweeps

ii) SigInt (?) indicates Imperial Guard on way to Rangoon... not just to sit there clearly.

iii) Port Blair - unsure of your recon there - but the "left shoulder is secure" for the Empire if making a move into India.

At the same time:

iv) China is 'in hand' with the troops your opponent has ?

v) The Australian adventure seems inevitably doomed as you are effectively hitting supply dumps and support.

Personally - obviously an opinion only - I would read this series of events that:

India to Calcutta Offence is imminent - especially with China in hand

The Australian gambit that never really made it past the north shore was always a diversion to force you to split troop / airforce concentrations from striking early into the Gilberts / Marshalls / Solomon Islands

I would assume China / India / plus points gained to date pushes your opponent into range of auto-victory and the remaining troops / supply / shipping is dedicated to building incredibly strong interlocking defense on the pacific islands in case AV falls just short.

Hmm to your earlier points:

i) Chittagong is under air attack and sweeps
Sweeps, yes, but this only started when a Chinese Army unit was discovered just outside Chittagong via air strike and the strikes on Chittagong have been aimed at troops, presumably to ID more units there. The initial air strike might have been instigated by recon picking up the unit moving into the jungle. Because of that I find these events ambiguous; they certainly would be consistent with an impending Imperial offensive but could just be due to the discovery of our activities.

ii) SigInt (?) indicates Imperial Guard on way to Rangoon... not just to sit there clearly.
Agree. The first SigInt of this I noted occurred after the discovery of our Chinese Army units' moving into Burma so the Imperial Guards deployment could be a reaction to that.

iii) Port Blair - unsure of your recon there - but the "left shoulder is secure" for the Empire if making a move into India.
I have no recon of Port Blair. With my imperfect understanding of the IJ order of battle, I *think* the IJN has enough carriers to engage us in the central Pacific and cover an invasion of the Chittagong/Calcutta area. Especially with their submarine recon telling them the RN fleet is on the western side of India. What do you think?

At the same time:

iv) China is 'in hand' with the troops your opponent has ?
I think so. Hard to say how much longer I can hold, and hard to say if I can hole the mountain redoubt.

v) The Australian adventure seems inevitably doomed as you are effectively hitting supply dumps and support.
I believe this was never a serious adventure, but only a delaying offensive. Which does not rule out an Australian adventure proper, but NW Australia is almost like a large island unto itself.

Personally - obviously an opinion only - I would read this series of events that:

India to Calcutta Offence is imminent - especially with China in hand
Thanks. My tea leaves are murky.

The Australian gambit that never really made it past the north shore was always a diversion to force you to split troop / airforce concentrations from striking early into the Gilberts / Marshalls / Solomon Islands
The only ground troops deployed to Australia have been to counter a proper Australian adventure, especially bearing in mind getting troops there in time after an adventure began might prove difficult or impossible. The 4EB I have sent to Australia because, unless I sent them to SE Asia, they could not have been used against the enemy. Even in the central Pacific the bases and ranges mean they could not be used for some time after capture, because - most likely - there would be a greater need for other types of aircraft, especially fighters.

I would assume China / India / plus points gained to date pushes your opponent into range of auto-victory and the remaining troops / supply / shipping is dedicated to building incredibly strong interlocking defense on the pacific islands in case AV falls just short.
Agree, so taking pains to make sure point-rich areas in India, Australia, and the Pacific are hard, costly targets over which a fight would net-benefit us.

• More than half of the USA 41st Div unloaded at Noumea in one day. It will be a little more than two days until the USMC 3rd Div convoy arrives so the port should be ready on their arrival. For stacking reasons the 41st will move to La Foa as soon as they can march.
