What is the disruption on your troops at sea...seems like they have been berthed for a long time.

Don't know, but they only had about a one-day delay at sea before this turn. Remember I disembarked them and only reloaded them again just before sailing (all their TF's had been disbanded too). I've put off the decision of whether to unload them. It'll be several turns before the convoys make Pearl anyway.

Have the replay, but not the turn (wrong file sent).

KB in play, east of the Marshall Islands. Our old CL's dealt a blow to the remaining known IJN DD lurking about (took abut 10,000 salvos to do it) then were handled roughly as target practice. Looks like some still afloat. KB close enough our carriers might be able to sprint and engage. Need to see the geometry and other factors.

This was an exercise to create a CV clash --- wasn't it?

Looks like some cold feet here.

1942 November 30

INVADED
Paoshan, Mengtze, Urumchi are invested.

CHANGED OWNERSHIP

Overall
• Several enemy carriers 7 hexes east of Taongi.

• The fleet is not spotted by the enemy but one troop convoy is spotted 4 hexes SE of the fleet.

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii
• Enemy sub activity near San Francisco. Missing all the action.

• All convoys report no contacts.

• After the worst gunnery displays in all of WITP-AE, the four old CL's all have excellent night ratings. And none of them will survive the next turn.

1942 November 30

The plan is the fleet will stay put to ambush a KB sprint toward the retiring troop convoys. The single TF to the west is 3x modern CL's. The remaining TF's are shown in the list. The BB's are grouped by speed, 3x fast BB's, 22 knot OBB's, and three TF's with 21 knot OBB's (sorted by fuel). Three TF's with 2x CA's. a single 2x DD TF will take station one hex SW. All fast surface TF's are React=6, the OBB's are React=4, the carriers are React=0, ASW is React=1.

Hard to believe he would sprint forward 14 hexes or so out of his land based air search.

I think he will not, but must allow him to make an error and be destroyed. Denying him that opportunity would be unfair!

I think you got cold feet! You should be springing forward to decisively engage!

The OBB's are too slow. They must be in place and sprint out to engage. I'm going to bring out oilers to refuel the fleet while the transport convoys refuel at Pearl, then the fleet can move forward again. Ideal would be the KN retires to Truk to refuel in time to allow the invasions. But, how often do things happen that good?

- KB used a bunch of torpedoes.
- KB is using fuel.
- I know where KB is.
- Most of my subs are between KB and Truk.
- A few S-boats are already on the way to add more patrols between KB and Wake.

As mentioned, the oilers are sailing from Pearl to refuel the fleet and the invasion convoys will refuel at Pearl. The KB can refuel at Truk or with their oilers sailing through a sea of USN subs. I have enough subs to spot KB heading back to Truk, and the timing might be god enough to move the invasion convoys and fleet forward again.

Sun Tzu states you should attack an enemy when he is about to retire after he has conducted his operation, for some of the points you already mentioned, low on fuel, low on torpedoes, low on sorties and air units worn down from 3 days of flight operations. I know you have n't fueled your carriers but if the tankers are closing in maybe paring down to the most important vessels and giving them the lion's share of the fuel then sprinting in to attack his retiring carriers might be worth the risk.

The OBB's are simply too slow to make that sprint, so I would be doing so with far less strength. Also, to hit KB at or near the present spot requires that KB pretty much stay put this turn, unlikely I think.

I agree fuel is OK at the moment for such a strike. Refueling is meant to allow an advance without further retirement so I can quickly take advantage of any KB withdrawal.

Ohh, quoting Sun Tzu!

What do you need slow battleships for in a CV Clash. You will never get close enough to have the big girls fight.

It's not a CV clash I seek, it's a total fleet engagement!

The notion is as the invasions are underway the carriers and gunboats are in front where the gun boats fly forward as the IJN carriers close the range on our carriers. The OBB's will use the IJN fleet's own movement to aid it's own.

Do you check your fleets in this ambush group for detection daily? Every notice a 1 dl and no enemy subs present?
