I believe you need a minimum 4 planes in the squadron to do a standalone night time recon.

They don't actually do Recon during the bombardment phase, they just 'spot' for their own ship. Messages are seen in the combat report regarding the specific ship the aircraft is spotting for. Here is one example from the combat report just above.

I have never heard that, and I can't think of why they would do it that way. As far as the bombardment goes, a single aircraft can spot for a ship. Many ships don't even have 4 aircraft.

• The Almagan invasion convoy has the troops but needs to load supply; they will do so at Agrihan to reduce pressure on supply depots at Pagan.

• In addition to the ongoing naval bombardments the fast carriers and escorts will return tomorrow from covering activities at Woleai, which included the expenditure of many sorties to destroy a group of enemy carriers. About 47,000 supply will also begin unloading tomorrow from some LST. That should suffice until the next supply convoy arrives in about 3 days.

We have a number of support assets on the way to Pagan which will speed loading/unloading, repairs, maintenance, and rearming.

• Assault shipping is heading from Pagan to Agrihan to pick up units there (1x Rgt + 2x Bns) and land them at Anatahan. They are all only partially prepared and will recover while they await landing of the fully prepared Bn currently loading at Majuro.

• The Americal Division is almost loaded at Nauru; we will therefore begin loading much of the armor at Ponape, and other forces staged closer to Saipan. To reiterate, the first wave landed will be there to defend itself until the second wave lands and the assault begins (unless some opportunity presents).

• With DL 10/10, Saipan shows 10 units; 35,480 troops, 248 guns, and 256 AFV. Guam now shows under 12,000 troops, so some might have been lifted to Saipan. Good. We have 2,020 AV (75,524 Base Load aka stacking versus capacity of 35,000) prepared for that place, and it is closer to the rearming base for bombardments.

I remember the restriction of night time air operations as a MichaelM post...I will look for it when I get the chance. It might simply pertain to non float/patrol units as that rings a bell.

I firmly believe that the higher the dl the better the bombardment. That means recon from 5 different units with decent recon....if you can get the mdl to 14 that is ideal I feel.

I am not 100% sure in the turn sequence will the floatplanes do a night time recon, and then bombard?

I don't know, but I know there does not even have to be a target set for the floatplane to spot for the ship.

I believe yes, so that it is possible a float plane does recon twice, once during the air phase, and a second time during the bombardment phase.

They don't actually do Recon during the bombardment phase, they just 'spot' for their own ship. Messages are seen in the combat report regarding the specific ship the aircraft is spotting for. Here is one example from the combat report just above.

Notice in other bombardments that turn there was no spotting, luck of the die rolls.

Your DL is set to 0 for night, but you can raise it prior to the bombardment...and that is where your high recon pilots excel.

I believe you need a minimum 4 planes in the squadron to do a standalone night time recon.

I have never heard that, and I can't think of why they would do it that way. As far as the bombardment goes, a single aircraft can spot for a ship. Many ships don't even have 4 aircraft.


Of course I could be all wet here, too.





I remember the restriction of night time air operations as a MichaelM post...I will look for it when I get the chance. It might simply pertain to non float/patrol units as that rings a bell.


Maybe night recon just doesn't work, except as float plane spotting???

And such a small attack too. I thought it was more likely he tried to sweep the fighters there.

The P-47's are at 20,000 ft, don't remember about the Corsairs.

Tojo is a better kamikaze I think than Oscar or Zero, Frank A would be even better...but it is an odd altitude for kamikazes, and all the planes would have been wiped out...You can have pretty impressive pools of Tojos by now

Looks to be a third of a unit.

• The Anatahan invasion convoy loading at Agrihan is now loading supplies; small port + other activities = patience required. The fully prepared Bn for Anatahan will pull into Ponape harbor tomorrow to load supplies. It might just be a Recon artifact, but enemy forces on Anatahan are looking much weaker than recently. The difference is more than I would expect from the bombardments in spite of their success. As with Almagan, I might hold the partially prepared units at sea until the fully prepared Bn is ashore to see what is left.

• Well over 100,000 supply at Pagan now and more on the way. Base forces unloading at Anatahan, but those will not all stay there. Engineering units loading at Agrihan for work at Anatahan. All space possible needed to stage units for the southern Marianas.

• At the moment three separate Saipan invasion convoys are headed for the Marianas including artillery, armor, and infantry. Two more will load infantry and join them for the first wave; one of those will load at Ponape but the other at Rabaul, requiring a detour around Truk, so the invasion is still a bit of time away.

• It seems clear that the Empire is evacuating troops from Anatahan. I will definitely hold at sea the partially prepared troops while the fully prepared Bn gets up there and secures the place. They are currently taking on supplies at Ponape and should be ready to invade in 5 or 6 days tops.

• Meanwhile Saipan invasion forces continue loading and making their way toward the target. USMC 2nd Division is beginning loading at Rabaul.

• The meager results of the naval bombardments on Saipan indicate there is a high level of fortification around the bases and enemy positions. As expected.

• West Virginia flooding is 8(3)/engine damage 2(2) and she has disbanded into Pagan to pump out and patch. She will remain in the Marianas while her services are needed there. two AA upgrades await her so she will head east at some point, probably after Saipan/Tinian/Guam. Colorado, although essentially damage-free, has the same upgrades pending so the two will go back together.

The 4EB will hit the airfields at Rangoon just to take away that option for the Empire, but there are no deployments of bombers seen in the vicinity. Nor of fighters. Indeed, only 1 auxiliary aircraft is currently spotted in the entire area.

• Prome continues to appear empty. Two of our three moving units are in the lead with the third unit lagging behind. The lead units might be able to cross the river into Prome in 7 or 8 days.

• The 2EB did not fly against Anatahan, probably due to severe storms at their own base.

• All those recent bombardments and no base damage is showing at Saipan. The land battle will be epic.

An LST convoy with two artillery units and numerous tank units for Saipan is at Pagan.

• Two or three days from now a Bn will land on Anatahan.

• West Virginia is almost pumped out; damage stands at 3-4(3)-2(2)-0. System damage might be 0 before she returns to the gun line.

• The invasion force is 1 hex from Ramree Island and of course everything is spotted. Invasion goes in tomorrow with heavy LBA CAP assisting the carrier cover. Rangoon airfield was damaged without aerial opposition, tomorrow the 4EB will hit the troops at Ramree Island. With two Rgts and some light armor landing against 5,000 troops I expect a brief battle. Most of it will go toward destroying the troops which will have no retreat path. The blocking force is in place as of today.

• The lead runners are 2 hexes from Prome and moving. They are now adjacent to enemy units in the jungle so they could be detected now or at any time. After tomorrow's landing at Ramree Island the 4EB will switch to the enemy units between Ramree Island and Prome to slow their movement into Prome, should they head that way.

• A tanker is being dispatched to fuel up the port at Cocos Islands, deemed so insignificant by the Empire is has been left untouched. AV Langley and AVD William B. Preston will make for there after fueling up in western Australia and we will send a small land unit from India for security. When the campaign for Sumatra commences we will begin PBY patrols from Cocos Islands to cover the Sunda Strait.

He has used up some of his supply creating those LBs and SSXs. IIRC the SSXs cost about 80 supply each. Keep on killing them so he has to create more! Bombing the AF and Port might help hit supplies too. And if he replaces any destroyed squads or devices he uses more supplies, so keep pounding even if the payback seems ephemeral for now.

Payback in destroyed supplies from naval bombardments is enormous with high caliber guns doing the talking. I play an AI game (for research purposes) with no FOW, which shows supply destruction among other things. I routinely see 2-5k supplies gone from a BB bombardment. Sure, not every bombardment is lucky to hit supply dumps. But it is the most reliable siege tool for base supply destruction provided you can sustain it. Bombing does not come close in overall effect, though it can suck out remaining supply from LCUs, which the bombardment cannot do

Those LBs were providing "Live Fire Target Practice" as they used a little gun ammo since you did not ram them as well as using up OPs points.

• Search shows 10x enemy ships 5x CA plus others 3 hexes west of Prome heading northeast. That is the TF over which Franks slashed through our air formations. Another TF, 5x ships 2x DD plus others 4 hexes WSW of Moulmein heading northwest.

• The carriers and escort carriers are pulling back to Chittagong. The cruisers (total 4 in 2 TFs) will stand at Ramree Island. The battleships from the Amphibious TF, now at Chittagong, will sortie to Ramree Island.

• Prince of Wales is completing AA upgrades, but Richelieu, Repulse, Renown, and 7x DD will sortie from Colombo and head east awaiting a vector toward remaining enemy forces.

• There is still 1 enemy unit in Prome and the 3 between Prome and Ramree Island. Now 3 enemy units are seen in the hex east of Prome so several 4EB squadrons will switched there attentions to those units to slow them.

• Our two lead divisions are still in movement formation and have 15 and 16 miles respectively toward crossing the river into Prome. The remaining division has 40 miles toward joining them in-hex. There are dozens of enemy bombers and fighters within range now so it is likely our divisions will suffer interdiction attacks too.
