The enemy would probably have been better off not having torpedoes available for those night torpedo attacks when they attacked the transports. Then they could have used a full bomb load at low level attack - no penalty involved. Those can damage your prewar CAs as well plus wreck the topside of your BBs.

You can afford the losses, the Japanese can not afford the losses so that is a clear victory. It is better to do it now and there where are no Kamikazes to interfere with the withdrawl of damaged ships.

I think Walter figured on losing most or all of what he sent. His calculation probably rested on doing enough damage to make destroy assets or make them unavailable when they are needed to execute operations to advance into the Empire.

Do you really need to eliminate Babeldaob right away or can you just neutralize it with air and sea bombardments, then go to the Phillipines? Once it has been bombed and shelled with little to no AAA return fire, just do it for a little longer then you can invade if you feel that you must invade. But do you really want to see those units again after they have been rebuilt? Any air evacuation will leave behind the heavy weapons anyway so if that is done, they will need other units to support them.
