Japanese Unit(s) surrounded at Guam

• All at once the number of Imperial troops on Guam dropped to 20,000.

• Loading of troops at Niihau for Truk is taking longer than hoped due to paltry facilities and ppor planning on the part of the staff.

New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, New Hebrides, Solomons, Papua New Guinea, New Britain

DEI, Dutch New Guinea, Borneo, Malaya

• Getting air HQ's and additional engineering units into Manado. Additional fighters were already brought in.

• Our fleet carriers nearing Manado and our CVE already there are mostly spotted.

Philippines

• The enemy carriers and battleships are 3 hexes NW of Balabac and heading SE, so they might head into the Sulu Sea as anticipated.

China

India, Burma, Thailand, Indochina

• No fortification reduction. Our casualties were pretty good all things considered.

• 1,465 AV at Bangkok. The troops will rest.

• Our tanks SE of Bangkok did not attack because the enemy unit slipped away to the SW, heading toward Chanthaburi. So, instead of being posted to keep supply lines open that unit must have been withdrawing.

• Many of our air units hitting troops at Bangkok will switch to striking the airfield, hoping to destroy supply.

• The Empire saw the danger and sent air strikes against our units bearing down on Udon Thani and Nakhon Ratchasima. Udon Thani will be invested tomorrow and assaulted the day after. Nakhon Ratchasima might be slightly delayed as the Indian 20th Infantry Division suffered serious disruption. Both units will have some fighter cover tomorrow, but real cover awaits the forward movement of more air base forces.

• Udon Thani is invested and will be attacked tomorrow, with assistance from 4EB.

• Nakhon Ratchasima is also invested but our recently bombed division is still recovering disruption and will wait before attacking.

• Our carriers will move to a point 2 hexes WSW of Mergui. There is another convoy at Bangkok, 2x AP, 1x TK, and 1x xAK, which might be in range of carrier planes from there if it puts to sea to evade LBA naval strikes from Moulmein.

• Bangkok has long been surrounded, but as of tomorrow, the only direction where the forces trapped could make an easy breakout is NW, a direction which would doom them even more quickly.

Japan, Korea, Manchuria, Russia

• The waters between the Philippines and Formosa continue to be a main SLOC.

New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, New Hebrides, Solomons, Papua New Guinea, New Britain

Philippines

• All combat squads are disabled so we must wait before assaulting the garrison which is not here. We will land the other commando unit tomorrow just in case, and bring in another one for the landing on Balabac.

• Our fleet carriers and CVE are 1 hex off of Tawi Tawi and are spotted.

• My best guess is that the enemy carriers and battleships are somewhat NW of Luzon. This is based upon time and motion possibilities plus friendly submarine DL's.

• We have two large surges of submarines currently breaking out (from single TF's) to saturate the waters to the east and to the southwest of that area. A third surge will remain in a single TF until it reaches a point in the South China Sea NW of Balabac. If the enemy carriers head south and southwest from their current position to snipe at our carriers, then our subs will have a shot at them.

India, Burma, Thailand, Indochina

Defending units:
112th Infantry Regiment
66th JNAF AF Unit

• The 3rd New Chinese Corps will pursue the enemy will assistance from B-24's. The enemy is in the open and heading for Ubon.

• A para Bde is being flown into Udon Thani for coverage.

• The assault on Nakhon Ratchasima will wait one more day for the Indian 20th Division to recover more disruption. Meanwhile air strikes commence on the defenders.

• We now have more air support at Pisanuloke and have moved in dive bombers for ground support. A base force is boarding trains for Ayuthia. A batch of engineering units will soon arrive to quickly build the base, as are ground forces for forward movement. Additional air base forces a farther behind but on the march.

• Our carriers are 2 hexes WSW of Mergui and are not spotted by enemy search. They will remain on station for the moment.

• Our first unit has arrived in Uttaradit but will await other units plus a blocking unit to arrive to the NE. I don't want a retreating enemy to block the rail from Chiang Mai, where we have Bdes awaiting clear passage to the front.

• Lots of air base forces are at sea or awaiting transport to Moulmein, as are all other manner of land units.

INVESTED
Bangkok
Nakhon Ratchasima
Tawi Tawi
Uttaradit

CHANGED OWNERSHIP

Overall

• Enemy carriers and battleships 5 hexes west and slightly south of Takao. Heading southeast, they could be angling to move along the main SLOC back to Japanese waters or for the Luzon coast to move southwest toward our carriers.

• Enemy cruisers 2 hexes NW of Laoag. Moving southwest.

• Enemy cruisers 3 hexes ESE of Quinhon. Moving west.

• A CV and AK in convoy spotted at Batavia, but I doubt this sighting.

• At this point I don't see any wisdom in landing at Soc Trang as that would delay other operations requiring major carrier resources to cover them. I can reallocate those ground forces and the ones now available on Guam.

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii

• Upgrades and repairs.

• BB Richelieu is entering Eastern USA shipyard with an estimated 201 days to repair.

Pacific

• Guam secured.

India, Burma, Thailand, Indochina

• Air strikes on the enemy retreating from Udon Thani must have inflicted more than 2,000 casualties.

• Assault tomorrow at Nakhon Ratchasima.

• There are a collection of small naval targets moving northwest through the Gulf of Siam. If they prove to be worthy targets perhaps our carriers will launch against them.

• Much artillery has made the march to Pisanuloke and will rail to Ayuthia for the siege of Bangkok.

• 1,587 AV at Bangkok. The troops are in great shape, I just want to get more firepower in place before the next assault.

I'm curious witpqs - why do you divide your battleships that are bombarding Guam into multiple separate tasks forces instead of combining them into one single large one?

Combination of guns and ship speed. That's not 100% pure at the moment, but when they were all on line (some are being upgraded, repaired, etc.) it was that way. For bombardment it might not matter, but if/when they run into surface opposition it often helps in game to have similar max gun ranges. And as far as speed goes, those old BBs are slow enough without them all losing another knot because of one slow poke in the formation!

Given all the variability in the game I doubt it makes any difference in the long run to the effectiveness of the bombardments. Maybe smooths out the results or something, but that's not a motive for me. Maybe a side effect maybe not.

Sometimes the TFs do better than other times. By doing the smaller ones rather than one large one, it will be more the average. Also, smaller TFs reloading will spread out the OPs points among the AE/AKEs so the TFs are more likely to have a full load of ammo instead of some being shorted. Especially with the different speeds since it may make a difference as to when the TFs arrive.

Interesting. I have mostly been using single large battleship task forces in my Vladivostok bombardments but then again I am not expecting naval opposition and have enough naval support at hand to rearm my ships so I didn't encounter any issues.

It's also long term management for me. I try to keep good TF commanders in place because it costs points to swap them around, so I mostly have TFs that last a long time and move ships to and from port (for repairs) as needed.

For me the issue is both reloading the ammo magazines and repairing minor damage. I have about 20 BBs and 40 or so cruisers to bombard Truk. I hold stage them one hex from Truk and only send in about four TFs per turn, but it takes about four days to turn around a TF after bombardment to being back to the staging point. Splitting them up enables sending them to different support bases - Guam (P5), Manus (P7), Ponape (P4), Kavieng (P6). There they have enough port, NS and AE/AKE to handle the rearming and minor repairs to the TF ships. I have enough TFs that a delay of three days for a ship to repair engine damage at an AR is not an issue. I can also send ships out for upgrades without disturbing the bombardment schedules much.

Truk is a smoking hole in the ground but I persist because I am still gathering amphib ships like LSTs, LCIs, LSI(L)s, APAs and AKAs to launch a massive invasion as practice for future landings. A few invasion LCUs are finishing their prep. I am also gathering together all the para capable units and all the Transport aircraft I can to participate in the invasion - wayyyy overkill, but practice again in setting up the operation.

Overall

• Enemy carriers and battleships are 6 hexes NW of Manado in the Celebes Sea.

• I still have to reallocate the units now prepared for Soc Trang. I'm thinking about making them be the first elements for Formosa, initial target Karenko. Opinions?

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii

• 120x B-29-1 moved to Hawaii on their way to the Marianas.

Pacific

• Troops for Ulithi have loaded at Yap, supplies being loaded now. Bombardment of Ulithi tonight, anticipate landings in 3 days.

• Two TF's with 8 fleet carriers and 9 CVL all freshly upgraded will arrive at Pagan tomorrow. They will take on additional escorts and promptly head west. It is possible the enemy carriers and battleships will head north through the Philippine Sea to avoid the mass of USN subs in the South China Sea.

New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, New Hebrides, Solomons, Papua New Guinea, New Britain

DEI, Dutch New Guinea, Borneo, Malaya

• Weather over our carriers shows as heavy cloud, so this one strike must have found a brief clearing.

• Enemy carriers and battleships are 6 hexes NW of Manado in the Celebes Sea.

• Our fleet shall move 2 hexes SE, a 4 hex movement, to the other side of Manado. If the KB does not move then the carriers will be 7 hexes apart, with our strike aircraft set to 6 hex range. I'll be very happy to shoot down all the Imperial carrier aircraft available. Basically, we are refusing a fair fight and angling for one which is as unfair as we can manage in the situation.

• Night search from Manado tonight might help as well.

• Sams versus Wildcats: sounds fair!

• Bombers are back at Soerabaja, so the B-29's will hit that airfield tomorrow.

Aggressive carrier sally! As you can see from reliable scouting reports, there are approximately 150 enemy carriers present.

Today's air losses. The combat events log has 60 'destroyed by CAP' entries, the operations log has 20 such entries. No idea which is considered more accurate.

Karenko may be the most isolated and easiest to land at, but it has small SPS and it is difficult to break out of because your options are easy to see (west along the south coast or NE to Taihoku) or difficult and slow (through the mountains). Taihoku would have the advantage of having industry you can use and a good SPS, but more likely are Kagi or Taichu on the north coast.
Any way you go will require you to have good control over the sea to bring in supplies.

So the question is, what do you want a base on Formosa for? Close off the strait to enemy shipping? Stage for invasion of south China? Strategic bombing of SW Japan? Each of these suggests different bases for the job.

Formosa would be after Okinawa.

So a combination of naval interdiction plus a base of operations for other invasions, mostly Japan but possibly China too.
