Dec 14th, 1941

Today featured a series of running battles beginning with a CL lead TF and featuring a Maya lead TF battling a TF with CA Houston, CL Marblehead and the dreaded CL Boise,

The third round was minus DD Stewart and DD Parrott. The damage must have been bad enough to cause them to drop out. This was again the TFs reacting and engaging. Torpedoes miss.

Round 5 was a pillow fight. I think both sides must be out of ammo.

Round 6 see a react to a new target. I fully expected to find Prince of Wales and Repulse but instead get 2 AMs. They are dispatched.

DD Harukaze
DD Hatakaze

Allied Ships
AM Whippoorwill, Shell hits 6, and is sunk
AM Finch, Shell hits 2

Round 7. Everyone must be tired and deaf from all the shooting. Another short pillow fight. CL Natori had disbanded from the TF.

quote:

000011 Night Time Surface Combat 1941-12-14 66,98 Balikpapan

Night Time Surface Combat, near Balikpapan at 66,98, Range 12,000 Yards

DD Minazuki
DD Fumizuki
DD Nagatsuki
DD Harukaze

Allied Ships
CA Houston, on fire
CL Marblehead
CL Boise
DD Barker
DD Bulmer
DD Paul Jones

In the end, I am not sure any of the Allied ships were in sinking condition. Houston was hurt and needs yard time. Marblehead and Boise while dented a bit are probably just in need of ammo. There was a message about CL Natori flooding magazines or something. Then, “CL Natori sinks at sea”. Bummer. Not a good exchange. The gunnery on both sides was pretty weak.

But wait! There is more! Houston is detached now.

DD Bulmer, Shell hits 1

Dockery, L.R. orders Allied TF to disengage (This happened almost immediately)
Sasaki, Seigo orders Japanese TF to disengage

And not to be out done, the Aussies get the TF that dropped guys off at Shortlands.

Now here is what I have been looking for. Z-Force is at Balikpapan. I feared I would run into them during the running surface combats during the night. My reinforced Mini KB (Kaga added) attacks. Unfortunately, no torpedoes left in this part.

Another attack

Allied Ships
BC Repulse, Bomb hits 14
AM Eland Dubois, Bomb hits 3, heavy fires, heavy damage
BB Prince of Wales, Bomb hits 6
AM Abraham Crijnssen, Bomb hits 4, and is sunk

Probably just some paint and some bondo. Neither looks to be badly damaged. Basically everything bounced. Still, 15 hits had to do some system damage.

So where has KB been? I am so glad you asked. After paying Pearl Harbor a visit on Dec 7th, KB moved to cover the Wake Island invasion which was delayed while waiting for KB to arrive. KBs AOs have made Truk and are replenishing their bunkers. KB will go to Truk as well to replenish sorties. It will cover some landing in the South Pacific (Rabual, Port Morsbey, etc.)

Let's see ... Last update was Dec 17, 1941 (Dec 2017 real life). Current date is Oct 5th 1943. I obviously suck a AARs ... I am going to try updating more often. We are getting into a point of the war where the Allies are growing stronger and the Empire is being slowly ground into dust.

We will start with the strategic map.

Being scenario 1 based, I did not push into India and only pushed to the northern coast of Oz. That gain has been lost at this point.

China is conquered. We have very minimal house rules. In my previous game, I bombed out all the light industry and rolled over China easily. I self imposed a house rule to not bomb industry and still rolled over China and now I get the advantage of what survived. I did allow witpqs to let his Chinese forces pushed into Burma to move to bases to recover. They are supposed to move back into China again as opposed to leading the charge to Singapore or something.

He was able to stop me in Burma. Between Allied air power being troublesome and needing to leave much of the IJA army in China (between the siege of Chungking and PPs), I just did not have the troops to push him all the way out into India. We are now at a stalemate.

In the Pacific, he is slowly taking back the Marshals. We had a carrier clash here where the IJN came out of the short end of the stick. In the end, I just did not get enough hits on any on CV to sink it.

I am not defending the South Pacific. In the past, this has been a place where units get isolated and left behind. Truk and the islands to the west are really the first line of defense. The Marianas are heavily defended.

The SRA is a real question mark for me on where and how to defend. I will post something specific about that later.

In the North Pacific, neither one of us has really done anything.

IJN Ship losses are as follows. The CV clash was really very frustrating. I scored a lot of hits but they were spread across many ships so there was not much in sinking condition.

22 DDs also lost. These really hurt.

Allied losses are as follows.

I think Idaho and Lexington are both bogus. The only one I an certain of is Long Island. Not the type of trade the IJN needs when clashing with the Allied CVs in early 1943.

27 DDs lost most of which are early war throwaways.

Whale Hunting ...

PoW and several British CAs have taken up station guarding supply convoys going to Akyab, Cox's Bazar and Chittagong. I have KB and company in the Bay of Bengal. I will try to sink these ships. Unfortunately, witpqs had minimal detection on on of the CV TFs. He knows something is there but he might not know they are CVs.

Oct 5, 1943

It was probably good money after bad but I sent 2 DDs to sniff around Akyab and Cox's Bazar. They definitely ran into more than they could handle.

05-Oct-1943 cont.

As I mentioned before, witpqs defended China in the mountains bordering Burma. This shows one of the Chinese units which escaped. I think this one is one which could move to Burma at the start of the game. Rather than defend Chungking, he sent many units to the Burma border.

Good hearing from you!

Lots to digest here, and I have also read the evil side's AAR so I will refrain from some comments.

Oil seems low, but fuel is high. Supply is medium. Refining creates no new supply, and hopefully a lot of the oil is back in the homeland.

Are there no merchant ships left to build of value? Aren't some of the escort carriers there? Ships for PB conversion?

Shame to see the Tone lost. One of my favorites.

Current plane builds look good, but pools are shallow especially for CV frames that always have value like the Judy. BTW, I don't see the version 3 or 4 on the research list...a gaming choice?

On research, everything looks good. I might be tempted to increase the Randy B FB a bit, as I think it is a useful rear area anti 4E platform. Maybe increase Frank production a bit when the time comes, 350 seems a bit low.

Well done, scen 1 is soo tough for Japan.

PS: Allies do have to spend PP for the 3rd New Chinese Corp, and it has an American TOE.

Hi Lowpe!

I am very concerned about supply. It is what killed my previous game in the end. I am just finishing building the HI fortifications (most logical bases to 5 with selected above 5.) so I am hoping to see an increase in the HI specifically.

Several of the models just started production so the pools are thin. In previous games, I way over produced some of the early models so I have probably under produced in this game.

The Judy is a gaming choice for me. I will use the Grace for most DB squadrons since it carries a torpedo.

Merchant shipping is another one of those things I have made a game decision to pretty much live with what I have. While the additional PBs are useful, the Type 95 DC they carry is pretty worthless. I have converted many already. I think I have enough but I am not sure.

I do plan to increase the Frank production.

Here are the current pools of all aircraft.

I am also a bit concerned about HI. I feel like I am a bit low. Keeping the China based HI in enough fuel to run has been a challenge. I am not sure how to get it to flow where it needs to. Chungking for example. Some of the coastal cities, I could ship fuel to and turn on stockpiling. Keijo for example.

As long as there is enough fuel to run the HI you should be fine. It might even pull fuel from Singapore.

Sail a tanker up the river and deliver oil there. Doesn't take much, and then you might have to ship it back out in 1945.

A few more 4Es target KB. No damage and a few shot down. KB will move to the West a bit. I am sending a couple of DDs into Calcutta to check on the riff raft there. PoW and friends are at Chittagong under 200+ fighters. I have Yamato and some friends I could send in but I worry about the price PoW would extract going down. It would be more of a fair fight then I would like. I think I could sweep with both LBA and KB fighters to try to reduce the CAP. My guess is the P-47 jocks are providing the bulk of the CAP at 32k feet waiting to bounce.
