Currently got a scare going in this game now.

I usually leave my ships able to upgrade, and of course, most of my carriers decided to go to dock for an upgrade.

Last turn I looked for them and they all disappeared. I don't see them on the ship maintenance screen of the port and they aren't listed in the master ship list at the top of the screen.

Tracker still says they're at Pearl.

I think you have to toggle the text at the top of the list to say "Show All Ships" instead of the usual "Show active ships".

Hadn't seen that. I'll give it a shot. I'm guessing it's a display issue at worst right now.

Thanks BB.

Looks like my MIA carrier issue is solved.

If you have too many ships disbanded at a port, the game will start hiding ships from view.

I built a couple of 100 ship amphib groups and then they showed up.

Ah yes, that happened to someone else who had more than 1000 ships in port. I'm having trouble imagining that many disbanded ships!
Did you quarantine all your cruise liners or something?

Mostly all the amphibs I'm accumulating.

I'm guessing the game is using some fixed length array to store the ship in port in. When it fills up, stuff gets bumped out.

It'll probably be two weeks before I can kick anything off, thanks to me leaving the upgrades on. At least all the flak will be enhanced.

My forces at Tinian will probably be extinct next turn. Guam and Pagan are pretty impotent right now, due to bombardments. He'll have a hard time taking Guam back if he tries, as I have a full armored division parked there.

I'd like to drive his battleships away before my invaders arrive. Willis Lee is leading a big cruiser force with hand picked captains. While I know the cruisers could probably deal with the Koongos, I'd rather it not come to that. Happy to have dispatched a fleet carrier.

I'm parking my carriers to the SW out of range until Enterprise, Hornet and Monterey arrive to reinforce them. Those two were stuck with their upgrades a bit later than the rest.

His one BB is on fire, but I'm not sure it's enough to drive her away yet. Pity the TBFs couldn't have landed a hit.

Ugly turn.

I wound up getting my carriers a bit too deep into the fire. Wound up surrounded by surface forces. I set them at full speed and sent them east. I think I'm about clear now. Had a couple surface encounters, but no serious damage. They'll be rendezvousing with my invasion fleet and their tankers. I dished out plenty of hits with my planes.

06 November 1943

Just realized... November 1943. I think all my torpedoes are normal now.

Things are getting ugly in the Marianas. Pagan and Guam keep getting bombarded, and both are low on supply.

My invaders have arrived. His surface force caught the one headed to Saipan. Most everyone's alive, but damaged, so I'm pulling them a little back.

My carriers cut loose. Some planes at Guam helped.

Some small groups went to Saipan and got chewed by the big CAP there.

At this point I can probably declare KB extinct. His surface groups and subs will still be a problem. Enterprise and I think Saratoga each took a torp, but they're still well enough to fly planes. I really don't want to run them back through the sub barrier with 2 DDs at this point. I wish my subs could hit the main targets like that.

He has one big surface group at Saipan and if I can club them, I can proced with this mission in a more relaxed state.

At my Tinian landings, my battleships bombardment was rather disappointing. I've still got about a 2-1 advantage in AV now, even with troops still unloading. I'll wait until everyone's set before I attack. My battleships from the invaders united with Willis Lee's cruiser force and they're heading to Saipan to finish his surface group.

Supply transports are unloading or enroute to Guam and Pagan.

Always ugly, all the time...

I've pretty much done what I can in the Marianas. There's a bunch of troops on Tinian. One bombardment and one attack took heavy casualties on my end. I think they're stuck for now.

I'm getting everyone out. My air is mostly depleted and some carriers are damaged, none fatally. One CV and two CVLs should arrive within the next month or so. After that, I'm dry until Feb 44. I think Victorious arrives in Aden too.

My troop fragment situation is a mess with all this. Bits and pieces everywhere. His cruisers hit one of my landing forces, but I had a bunch of cruisers there. Ashigara was in this group, but died two days ago against my three BBs in Lee's goup. Nice to see another one die.

I'm waiting for recon to get fixed up at Eniwetok, after an upgrade, so I can check out Truk again. Last I checked, he seemed to have not too may troops there. I may just go in and take it. As long as it doesn't become the fiasco I had against Cannonfodder (Kenchi Sulla). I've got plenty of supply at Guam and Pagan now, so they'll be good for awhile. Musashi is hanging around the area, so I'll probably be dealing with bombardments now and then. Thankfully, Yamato's dead. Betties at Truk are hitting some of my more southern transport groups, so I'm detouring them north.

After Truk, I'll probably go directly to Luzon, hopefully get him to thin out his forces in the Marianas and I can build up more there. If he wants a heavy air presence there, it'll mean being light elsewhere. I have enough fighters up on Pagan and Guam to escort bombers on strikes. Any shipping not at Saipan or Tinian can get hit. Taking truk can put a choke hold on Rabaul and everything south.

19 November 1943,

Got most everyone recovered back to Pearl. Carriers will arrive next turn.

What to do...

Hitting these islands when they have a million fighters present is turning out to be very difficult. CAP always seems to be favored in attacks.

At least KB is pretty much extinct. I haven't gotten confirmation on Hiryu and Soryu yet, but both were in very bad shape in the last encounter.

I think I'm going to simply bypass these islands and go straight for Luzon. I'm going to need several monster convoys to do it. Lots and lots of supply will need to go to keep everyone fed until Luzon is secure. Lots of aircraft and lots of support will also go along. Mauban is my selected landing sight. Once Luzon's secure, I'm hoping enough supply will be generated locally to keep everyone up.

This will be a ways out yet. Lots of ships are waiting to get fixed, including some of my carriers. I can probably count on two of the Iowas to be along for this. Insurance against Musashi.

Anyone else dealt with megacaps on islands like this? I suppose I could try sweeps.

I've withdrawn most of my aircraft from Guam, since they're being bombarded daily. Pagan has been left alone lately. Their planes can't do much thanks to the fighters on Saipan and Tinian.

Look at the Iowas carefully - IME they come with low crew experience and do not perform well in night surface combat. I think it is sometime in 1944 before the Allies get a boost in nighttime gun accuracy from radar fire control (vaguely recall something from Alfred on this but couldn't find it).

Anyway, the Iowas would protect your carriers against an encounter with Musashi but I am not sure they would do well in the battle. However, when they do get hits on a Yamato class, they have a good chance of penetrating and doing a lot of damage. IIRC, belt armour penetration is possible at around 15K yards.

Mundy, you would need to knock out airfields if you have trouble dealing with fighters. If you can't bombard with BBs or with LBA you should wonder if you really are willing to take huge risks to take a piece of land? Historically the allies only took what they needed.... Not what they could

Yamato died to 16" shells from the Colorado, so up close, I'm not worried about her armor.

Funny... In 1944, didn't Willis Lee recommend against a surface action, due to crew experience?

Kenchi! Good to see you back.

I figured the Marianas were somewhat important as a step east from that point. They would have helped cut off everything he has down to the south.

I suppose I could sweep in with BB bombardments and follow up with air after that. Bombardments seem to wipe airpower out pretty good as it is.

I'll have to think on it.

One thing I think I haven't mentioned is that Steve never took Timor.

I've got transports that will just arrive in Brisbane. I'm hoping to round up a large base force and guard troops to send up north. I can threaten Soerabaja with B-24 at that point.

Ships loading up with troops, support and supply for West Timor. He's going to regret not taking it.

Got confirmation that Hiryu is sunk. Her half sister shouldn't be far behind.

We're stalemated at Tinian. He launched an attack that went 3-1 despite about equal AV, but still took heavy losses next to mine. This will keep him busy for awhile

He's bombarding Guam. I've withdrawn all aircraft from there and most from Pagan. Some aren't letting me withdraw. I did relocate some to Marcus.

Next time I come through, I'll pretty much be able to go anywhere I want. Just avoid getting entangled with any fighter heavy bases.

Saratoga and I think Enterprise will be missing this one, due to heavier damage. Lots of CVE to escort the troops.

AV does not reflect firepower. Firepower is what does the damage.

Invasion 3.0

Stuffs loading up at Pearl for another journey.

Sara and Ent will be staying behind. Too much damage to make it. I still have plenty of carriers left, so no issues. His carrier force is mostly extinct now anyway. Any naval forces which challenge me will have to do it on the open seas without a million aircraft from a nearby base helping. Hard to believe we're not even into 1944 yet.

I'm loading lots of ships for this one, as I'm going straight to Luzon this time. SJ's been sending more troops into the Marianas as I've a feeling he's pulling these from the Philippines along with all the fighters that have showed up. I'll be landing on the East coast (Mauban?). I'm bringing lots and lots of troops and will be bringing along a sizable land based air group too. Hopefully I can disrupt shipping in the area. I'm also hoping if I take Manila and the rest, it will be sorta self sustaining as far as supply. Needless to say.. I'm pretty much emptying out Pearl to do this. If all goes well, I can base all my shipping in Manila and take the rest at my leisure. Any shipping from the States or Pearl will need carriers nearby to protect them in the Marianas/Iwo Jima region.

At least my overstacking issue at Pearl will be fixed. I can bring back lots of troops I had to send back to the States.

I'm not particularly thrilled with the map mod used in this scenario. Moving troops around in Burma is excruciatingly slow, despite the map showing a minor road. Probably making 3 miles a day. Wish we had a stock map. Rail movement around east India is also near impossible.

10 December 1943

The worm turns...

I had a few big transport groups unloading at Koepang. All the troops were ashore and I was unloading supply, most of which is out.

Suddenly carriers arrive and hit my ships, sinking a number of them and damaging others. The mouseover is showing counts on his force in the 90s for bombers and fighters, so it's not a little group.

I managed to get 4 squadrons of Lightnings in as well as 1 of Corsairs. SBDs and B-25s are also there now, so I can hit back. We'll see if I can mangle them next turn. Maybe I can get lucky and hit some CVs.

Meanwhile my Luzon invasion had departed Pearl, on the slow trek across the Pacific -- probably 2 weeks real time before they hit. If the aforementioned group at Timor decides to challenge this group, they'll be toast. I plan to ship more stuff from Pearl in the next few days. Wasp and a CVE will be fixed by then to escort them. Lexington, Enterprise and two fast BBs are getting set to ship to the States for repair. Don't want them clogging up Pearls dockyards when lots of smaller stuff needs fixing. I've cleared the repairs out enough that it doesn't take forever to cycle through the repair modes.

Once his carrier issue is dealt with, I'll be moving in the heavy bombers and start bombing Soerabaja. Hit him in his oil pockets.

Invasion fleet is about 8 hexes east of Marcus, plodding along.

I'm more at risk of detection once I pass south of Iwo Jima. I've reigned in the attack radius of the TBFs to about 3 hexes, so they won't rush out and attack any distant shipping. I need their torpedoes in case his battleships try to contest.

More CVEs and CVLs have been arriving at Pearl, and they're escorting more troop convoys with more people and planes aboard.

I want Luzon packed with airpower before I'm done.

He's got a number of battleships running out of Saipan, which have been bombarding Guam, Pagan or Tinian daily. I hadn't been able to hut them much due to the massive fighter cover over his bases there. If he comes after my invasion fleet, he's in the open then.

I'm hoping this invasion gives my guys in the Marianas a break

My force punched past Marcus. He had some subs clustered there, probably from past experience. All the ASW missions from my floatplanes at least spot them. I beat one sub up pretty badly and am clear now.

He knows I'm coming anyway. Attacks on my group at Tinian have picked up. Hopefully he'll lose track of my forces. Don't know if he's got search planes at Iwo.

It'll probably be a mad scramble once he realizes where I'm really going.

Was holding my breath a bit.

SJ has some twenty-plus subs lurking near Marcus, and it was tough getting through them. I did sink a few. My follow on groups will skirt south of Guam.

I was held up for a couple days. I noticed two LST were damaged and could only make about 2 kts, which was holding the entire force up. Don't remember them taking hits. Sacrifices must be made... I cut them loose (and immediately lost them) but I appear to have punched totally through his sub screen. I think only one TF is currently spotted, so hopefully they'll all fall of his map. He has to be wondering where they're going.

Fuel's getting a bit thin for them right now. I've already emptied out the AOs that were tagging along. I'll make it to the destination, after that, who knows. Hopefully Manila has fuel in stock.

We are into 1944 now. Hopefully the super-flak is in place. One fleet CV (Hancock, I think) will arrive in Pearl in a few days. Can escort another group out.

I'm thinking about cutting the fleet carriers loose and blockading Luzon. I'm a bit unsure if the CVE group could defend on their own -- especially if his battleships decide to pursue. I should be able to take the TBFs off their 3 hex limit next turn.

You always have to check to see if a few ships need refueling and are slowing the rest or the dreaded collision and you don't catch it and it slows your TFs down for a few turns until you spot why.

Been watching that too. Everyone has at least 2,500 miles of range available, so I should be good the rest of the way.

10 January 1944

D-Day +1

Troops arrived at Mauban last turn, and starting unloading. No enemies present.

The turn I landed I hadn't taken the base yet, and the game wouldn't allow me to leave the hex. I was starting to get upset at the worthless map used in this mod. However, with the base taken, I can now be on my way. Big sigh of relief, as I thought I was stuck.

His effing subs followed me in and put a torp into two of my carriers. Hornet has sys/flt/eng damage of 12/20/11. Moderate, but not fatal. Bunker Hill also ate one, but has completely zero damage. Must have hit the wake.

I'm moving the carriers to the north end of Luzon to get them away. Everyone else is busy unloading. Mauban has no airfield to begin with, so I'll be dumping aircraft to a spot they can't fly yet. Lots of base forces are unloading, so I should be to level 1 pretty quickly. Pretty sloppy of Steve not to develop the island better.

Manila appears to have about 14,000 troops present. I've got a minimum of 13 divisions plus lots of others unloading. More still enroute from Pearl. I think he's weakened Luzon a bit to deal with the Marianas.

I also killed a bunch of ships unloading at Manila along with a bunch of troops. Less to deal with on shore. Defending aircraft there was fairly tepid.

Your ships probably couldn't leave because at least one of them was out of Ops points.
