A group of carriers is sighted 10 hexes NW of Eniwetok, moving east. He may be deciding to test my defenses. I'm adjusting my PBY search patterns to keep watch. My cargo ships unloading at Eni and Kwaj are stopping and moving out of the area for now.

He took a shot at Trincomalee last turn. I'm guessing it'll hold at least a week.

That carrier group north of Eniwetok is slowly chugging its way east. No clue what that's about yet. Can't be KB, as they were near Colombo not too long ago.

Not much going on elsewhere. The transports I evacuated from the Marshalls are headed back to finish unloading.

I've a bunch of ships overdue to withdraw. Unfortunately, Many of them are at Pearl going through an upgrade, so I have to wait a bit. I hate ship withdrawals...

My transports slowly inching their way towards Noumea. My carriers are south of Milne Bay, headed to Townsville to refuel. I'm well south of his search range.

Looks like his transports are about level with French Frigate Shoal. Good position to interdict Hawaii and Midway.

Lost his carriers. Last turn, they came 6 hexes from Eniwetok. My planes launched some weakling strikes which got hit bad. He had about 70 fighters up. They were last seen going in a westerly direction. Either he went west, or maybe he went down the east side of my island. Hopefully not the latter, but I'm re-arranging my search patterns.

The first of three big troop/plane convoys will reach Noumea in 2.5 days. I want to get there as well as Luganville, Efate and others built up quickly to block any possible moves this way.

Some of my bombers took a shot at the port at Colombo. He's got about a dozen fighters there, and my raids accomplished nil. Overall, it's been fairly quiet in that area. I'm trying to get defenses in Southern India built up the best I can.

My USAAF B-17s will reach Cape Town in about a week or so, so I can add them to what I have in India and hopefully make keeping ships in Colombo risky.

Well I guessed wrong about the direction his carriers would go!
But if it is now southbound from Eniwetok, it could be a threat to your convoys heading to Noumea. Hole up at Suva?

My convoys are stretched between Pago Pago and Noumea. My carriers refuel at Townsville next turn, and can go back to cover.

Wasp arrives in 6 days. My RN carrier reaches Pearl next Turn.

I've finally re-spotted his carriers. They're 10 hexes S of Truk, looking to be headed towards Rabaul. Between three groups, I'm counting about 180 each of fighters and bombers. KB may have made its way back. I've got Truk heavily smothered with subs now.

My carriers are getting set to refuel at Townsville before proceeding to Noumea. The first convoy will reach next turn.

I've gotten sloppy and let Pearl run out of fuel, so a big tanker convoy (200k+) will be leaving San Francisco in a day or two. I'll follow up with another once they kick off. Not a big issue yet, as I wasn't sending anything from Pearl anytime soon. Lots of ships there are upgrading and repairing right now.

Other than that, fairly quiet everywhere.

P-39s for the 10th AF arrived at Cape Town. Shipping to India.

North Carolina will arrive on-map from Panama next turn. San Juan just departed there.

Stuff's unloading at Noumea. I'll have lots of forces there before I'm done. I may be able to kick off into the Solomons with what I'll have there. More likely, I'll secure Luganville and other bases first.

Intel screen shows Kaga and Zuiho dead, but the aircraft losses screen doesn't seem to reflect this. Either way, they're hosed. I'll keep my ships in the area for another shot. His fighter strength should be reduced from this and hopefully the other carriers will continue burning to help me. My fighter losses weren't too bad, so I should be good there. I have two S-boats a few hexes away, which could cause more trouble for him.

Bombers from Port Moresby also strike and mostly get shredded. They did put a hit on Africa Maru at Milne Bay.

He's attacked at Soerabaja for three days now, with my losses mounting. Odds have fluctuated a bit here. I'd give them two more days tops.

My heavy bombers from the States should reach Cape Town in a week. More weapons for India.

Good show really! You probably sunk 1 CV and a CVL and damaged 2 more CVs. He had massive CAP up and maybe the bad weather hid you but by the size of his CAP 239 based on 6 CVs and 2 CVLs, that would constitute almost all his Zeros anyways. So it may be that he was using max CAP and had not set his strike aircraft to naval attack hoping to weather a first strike and then counter the next day after you fighters and bombers had blunted themselves on his Zeros.

Weird...

Going through Combat Reporter, I go to the Combat section of the Ops Report and see this.

If the CR shows all the ships in his TF, it is very weakly escorted - one BB and some DDs. Unless he has separate SCTFs in the same hex, he is begging for a night intercept by a strong cruiser TF!

I'm not confident the combat report shows everything. Just what was attacked.

Either way, I don't have the resources for a surface engagement. I've only CLs at Townsville and I'm not stripping my carrier groups for this.

Next turn will probably be bloodier for all involved. After that, I'll pull back to Noumea.

Stuff's unloading well at Noumea. Two divisions nearly unloaded. Lots more will be there within a week. All this is more of a sideshow to protect what's going on there.

Two cruisers lost to three destroyers. Definitely not worth the effort. I may need to keep a battleship in the area to help, but with my luck will probably get torpedoed also.

Forgot to mention, but Sabang fell some 5 days ago. Soerabaja just fell now. In both locations, many units retreated, so he'll be chasing them down for awhile. He's made some halfhearted attacks at Tarakan, and Balikpapan is still unmolested. He hasn't taken anything past Java at this point.

Wasp arrived in Panama and is now departed for Pearl. Her torpedo squadron only has 9 Devastators in it. They'll flip to TBFs when they get to Pearl.

Meanwhile, by New Guinea...

None of the carrier aviation flew this turn. Weather must be the issue. Planes from Port Moresby attempted to hit ships at Milne Bay, but were fought off. His carriers are headed back towards Rabaul. Mine are meeting up with my tankers near Noumea before heading back to Pearl. Everyone needs to get stocked back up, as I'm badly depleted. On the intel screen 11 Kates and 5 Zekes went down as a result of "ground" so I'm guessing Zuiho took the plunge. Sort of an inconclusive affair, but hey...none of my carriers got touched. Illustrious and Wasp will be added to the fleet by the time I get back. Losing Kaga does take a bite out of his naval aviation.

Once I get back, I'll probably start dealing with the rest of the Marshalls areal. I'd like to grab Ponape and Kusaie, as well as bases like Wotje, so I can have overlapping air coverage and make them KB proof.

Once I get settled in at Noumea, I may grab Guadalcanal, as he hasn't really moved far into the Solomons yet. I have plenty of ground units at San Francisco and Pearl I can get shipped to the front.

Engagement range at 1000 yds for the first two encounters was a very bad die roll for the visibility conditions. Hard to dodge a long lance at that range. Bad luck/misfortunes of war!

Sorry about the delay. I was dealing with some AAR burnout for awhile.

I've been fairly busy. I unloaded lots of troops and planes at Noumea. I had stacking issues, so a division, base force and coastal artillery have headed to Koumac. Only the Coast Arty is still enroute. Other convoys originally bound for Noumea have diverted to Efate. I'm also unloading lots of troops at Lunga. That group just encountered a sub this turn, so I hope it doesn't trip him off to intercept my ships.

One of my RN carriers, Formidable, I think is enroute to San Francisco due to an impending withdrawal.

I have lots of base units and engineers at the extreme southern bases in India, getting them built up. My heavy bombers from the US are just starting to arrive on-map, enroute to Karachi.

I paid Milne Bay a visit last turn. He had three DDs there guarding, but they were brushed aside. If I was more awake, I would have followed it up with an airstrike that turn.

Not much this day.

My ships arrived at Lunga. I got cold feet about this, as a pack of destroyers with a CVE were at the Shortlands looking like they're going east. I've re-routed them to Luganville instead. This group was sighted. I'm hoping he thinks I have troops already ashore there. If so, it may put off any action by him there until I really move guys in.

I've a couple days until my carriers finish their upgrades. I'll probably move them to the Solomons to cover a real Lunga landing at that point. If I can get a good mutually covering grid of bases set up in the Solomons within the next few months, by life in that part should become easier.

I'm just catching up here. Good show on the carrier battle. He had a lot of his CAP at 2,000 and 5,000 feet. I'm guessing if he had it all up around 10,000 feet you'd have done a lot worse.

Very good on the carrier strike. Anytime that you ca reduce the Japanese carrier strength without losing any is a good thing.

Bad luck on the surface combats but that is the type of weather for PT boats and IJN DDs. Low moonlight and storms allow them to get close and launch torpedoes. Then get out of the combat zone.

On the intel screen, I have no confirmation of Kaga going down yet -- only Zuiho. She took way too many hits to get out alive. Soryu and Shokaku were hit pretty good, too.

My dive bomber pools are pretty drained right now, so it'll be some time until I can get everyone up to strength again. If I get desperate, I could flip a squadron to Vindicators. Some of my VMSB squadrons are flying SNJs right now.

A big group of carriers and other assorted ships are 17 hexes WSW of Kwajalein, headed east. It doesn't appear to be a raid, as I don't yet see any transports involved. I'm sortieing 6 carriers from Pearl to intercept, though I think they'll be too late. Maybe a day or two at full throttle will help. I'll send oilers out also. If he does try to land troops it'll be an ugly fight for him, as I left good garrisons there.

A good pack of battleships appears to still be sitting at Colombo. I've 4 squadrons of USAAF heavies at Trivandrum, so if anything goes to port, I'll hit them. Recon Hurricanes are keeping watch daily.

Troops are landed at Luganville and Efate. Once they have airfields, I'll spread some aircraft around. I'm overstacked at Noumea as it is.

His naval force is parked at Jaluit, with the carriers one hex SE. He's either reinforcing or withdrawing the troops there. If the latter, he may be stuck awhile getting them loaded up. My carriers are two days away from being in range. My planes at Roi-Namur make a strike on the near group. His CAP didn't look overly heavy, but maybe because it was an adjacent hex.

I don't like these losses as my dive bomber pool is pretty much empty right now. As it is, few of my carrier DB squadrons are at full strength, though I'm stocked in fighters and torpedo planes.

I'm calculating I'll be 6 hexes away in 2 days.

My forces at Luganville are loading up for Lunga (again). I didn't realize I actually unloaded troops there before, so I'm getting everyone together I hope to have an airfield up and running there soon. Two convoys from Brisbane are enroute with supply. Supply's getting thin in Oz, and I really need to get the logistics up and right in the SPA running soon. Not sure yet, if Pago Pago and Suva will play a role yet or not. I should probably use Suva and move all my xAKLs there. Shipping's been tight overall, and I have a logjam of troops in San Francisco waiting for shipment to Pearl

Fairly quiet in China and India. Lots of building and reinforcing at the latter. I think I have most of the usual lesser invasion bases covered with troops.

The Clash... sorta...

My planes sortie out against his carriers, and other ships. His CAP was too strong for me, and I had less than an optimal situation with the escorts. Some groups went in unescorted and got trounced. Maybe it's the Allies not able to cooperate with their carriers like the Japanese. A number of torpedoes also dudded.

Fortunately, he made no strikes against my carriers. I'm pulling out. I can probably weather any strike he gets off next turn, but hopefully I get away cleanly. It's going to take months for me to recover my dive bomber losses. At least into October, when the dash-4 Dauntless kicks into high gear. As it is, I'm only cranking 30 dash-3s a month. Formidable will be gone by then and Illustrious won't have a ton of days remaining yet either.

Subs got a couple hits on transports the previous turn. They're chasing his ships in the Marshalls, but escorts have kept them away from anything important. The one hit on his carrier probably isn't anything too serious.

Forces are finally landing at Balikpapan. On the initial bombardment, I got some hits on his battleship and some of the transports, but nothing after that. He's already outnumbering me in AV at least 3-1.

Mid 1942 is kinda early for the Allies to get decent strike coordination. Pilots need to gain a lot of Experience.

In stock scenarios there is no SBD-4, the numbers going straight from the -3 to the -5. There is a biplane SBC-4 or similar prefix, but the aircraft is not recommended for combat against warships. Bombing merchies and ASW duties would be OK.

Allied Air Combat T.F. suffer if they have more than 150 planes per T.F. at 1942...which makes 1CV per TF the only valid solution to avoid those situations...
