Allied Air Combat T.F. suffer if they have more than 150 planes per T.F. at 1942...which makes 1CV per TF the only valid solution to avoid those situations...

That is what the book says, but many experienced players say the coordination penalty for going over the 150 limit is so small as to be negligible.

Mid 1942 is kinda early for the Allies to get decent strike coordination. Pilots need to gain a lot of Experience.

In stock scenarios there is no SBD-4, the numbers going straight from the -3 to the -5. There is a biplane SBC-4 or similar prefix, but the aircraft is not recommended for combat against warships. Bombing merchies and ASW duties would be OK.

Well, they're in this mod. Not sure if/when the -5s come out. The -4 will roll in at 80 a month.

25 July 1942

My carriers got away cleanly. His forces seem to be gravitating to the west. I'm still not sure if he was evacuating or reinforcing Jaluit. I'm guessing the latter to beef up somewhere else. He seemed to be busy at Kusaie also.

I'll just meet with my tankers before heading back to Pearl.

Troops still unloading at Balikpapan. I'm surprised he hasn't attacked yet, as he's about 450 - 65 right now. Probably next turn.

One sub hits a DD south of Truk. I wish he went after the freighters instead.

A UK division's parts are heading to Trivandrum. All except one are already there, so I think I have a credible defense of India right now. His ships at Colombo all seem to have vanished. Not sure if it's a bad search or what. I'll know for sure next turn.

Kaga's finally come up on the sunk ship list, so I know she's finally down.

He's been trying to take Bacolod in the PI for some time now, without success. I think's he's trying to finish things off here with too few troops.

Cebu is also still in my hands. The last holdouts in the Philippines.

I've had ships sending supply to Guadalcanal. Some of his returning carriers arrived and sank a bunch of them. Mostly little xAKLs, fortunately. Rabaul's Betties also took a shot a few turns ago. I now have Long Island enroute to Noumea. She'll escort the rest of my forces to Lunga once his carriers clear out. That should be sufficient air cover for the Betty threat. Probably half of Lunga's forces were at Luganville, so I'm working on getting them recombined.

The rest of my carriers should reach Pearl over the next few days starting next turn. I'll probably withdraw another RN carrier. One more RN battleship is enroute to Panama from Cape Town. My two wrecked battleships at Pearl have finally departed for the Seattle/Bremerton area for repair. Those two ships were what was making my clicking through the repair screen so slow. One's making 6 knots while the other can only manage 3. I split them up so as not to slow down the "faster" ship.

Steve has also landed at Kendari-Staring Bay and 72,103, near Taliaboe, shoring up the DEI. No real moves towards Timor yet. I'm keeping plenty of subs in that area.

My subs have probably hit four freighters in the last week, which is promising. Then I had this event this turn.

Nice to see this old fossil do her job. This was a complete transient meeting as she was still enroute to her patrol zone. Pity a bunch of shells couldn't have also been put into here, but overall, Hiyo is most likely finished. Scratch up a third carrier. Her torpedoes are probably more dependable, too. How many guys here can say Surcouf sank a Japanese carrier?

Most excellent result! But most of us don't get to have Surcouf in the game, so I think yours is the only one to sink a carrier! I hope you have a bottle of Rémy Martin VSOP Napoleon Brandy available for her captain when she gets back to port!

Nice action on it's part. Most like to see it Surcouf and sink things with it's two 8 inch guns.

Reasonable quiet now. He's landing at Christmas IS IO now.

I don't think he's taking seriously the warnings about trying to take objectives on the cheap, as he's struggling with some of his conquests.

Kendari did finally fall on the 4th.

Other than this, it's mainly my subs having encounters. Sometimes good, often nothing.

I'm sending another bombardment to Milne. Interesting that he's nothing but fighters there. I'd think Steve would want to be more offensive-minded there.

Long Island departed Efate to escort troop and supply convoys to Lunga. Any unescorted Betties will be toast.

At this point, I have no real sense of offensive on his part anywhere. Maybe he's already trying to tighten up the perimeter. To my disappointment, no ships have docked at Colombo. My heavies have been waiting for such a chance. Many of my smaller, invasion prone bases in India have plenty of troops, so I can at least stall any landing which happens.

Things go south at Lunga. It turns out he had carriers just west of Shortlands and escorted Kates made a run at my ships unloading at Lunga. Long Island's Wildcats fought but did little. They only carried bombs, so none hit, but the CAP was weakened enough that the Betties at Rabaul got through, hitting an Omaha and putting 2 torps into LI. She's at 70 flt, making 5 kts, so I don't think she'll get away. Most of her aircraft went down after she was incapacitated, since Lunga's airfield isn't up yet. Transports are all fleeing east to wait.

Bacolod falls, finally.

Bombardment happens at Milne. Kinda nice being able to get there in two days.

I'm moving this bunch east, hoping to run interference for LI and the transports. If I can get in range, I'll try for a quick night ambush of his carriers. I had a knack of pulling that off often in my last game. Even if LI sinks, I'm far better off in the carrier loss column than he.

All my carriers will be out of the yard at Pearl in 3 days. I'm tempted to escort with them near Lunga, despite the shortage of SBDs. One or two of my carriers do have a full load of dive bombers.

A bit late at this point. I didn't think I would be dealing with an ambush.

12 August 1942

Sigh...

I lost plenty of freighters in the deal. Fortunately, the main group with the troops got away. Having my cruisers run interference saved that group at least, but in return got smacked good. I think most of my warships will survive, but they'll have an extended stay at Sydney for repairs.

To start with, my cruisers met his cruiser force which had harassed my freighters.

His carriers seem to be pulling back west, so I think most of the fireworks are over. I can probably forget about reinforcing Guadalcanal until I bring in some real carriers for escort. I'll probably get them sent in the next day or two. I want Lunga up and running sooner rather than later.

Moving along.

My carriers reached Luganville, to escort the remaining troops to Lunga. They'll probably depart next turn.

Looking over Ceylon with recon, it's looking like Steve's completely withdrawn everything from that island. No airplanes, no troops. I'm readying up a cheap LCU to get shipped over and start reclaiming bases. I don't quite get this, as he could use Colombo to completely dominate the area if he wanted. I'm guessing his expansion era is ended and he's just circling the wagons now. I'm not sure how quickly I can get shop set up there as it is.

Steve's making more fruitless attacks at Bandjermasin. They'll probably hold out forever.

My one unit lands at and takes Colombo. No enemy forces present. Once I secure the island, I'll have to see about getting it repopulated and in order again. I'm a bit slim on transport there, so it'll take time.

The Lunga fragments should be unloading next turn, with all my carriers covering. I also have two P-40 and a P-39 squadron based there now, since the runway is up, so I should have plenty of air cover for the transports. Lots of supplies will unload also, keeping them in good shape for the foreseeable future.

In my opinion, he should have grabbed 'Canal before now. I'm in position to roll my way up the Solomons when I start. The 1st USMC Division is at Suva (forgot about them...) and I'll be getting them sent to the front also. They'll pretty much kill anything they meet. I've almost enough PPs to flip another division in the States, too, so they'll be outbound within a week, also.

One CVE arrived in Washington state, with replenishment squadrons aboard. I'll probably get them over to my fleet carriers and get their SBDs up to strength.

I'm forcing myself to calm down and not move too quickly. I've an urge to take the Marianas already, but I should wait until mid-43 before trying that. Maybe Shortlands can be on my short list. I've lots of air units in the States and Hawaii, I need to get moved up front.

He hasn't advanced anywhere SE of Celebes yet. Even there, he only holds half the bases there. Maybe a big push through the DEI is feasible.

My ships reach Lunga. Betties sortie out, but get knocked back. I've 3 USAAF P-40 squadrons there. I just moved one Australian squadron there from Port Moresby. I'm withdrawing my carriers, as everything seems to be covered well now.

My carriers are set to meet my replenishment CVE next turn. Their Dauntlesses should be brought up to better strength after that.

Over in hex 94-46, 2 hexes SE of Tsinan, I've been enduring daily bombings by a big squadron of Alfs. I've had to sit though this daily.

Looking over my recovering squadrons at Chungking, I notice a full squadron of P-66s ready to go. I deploy them over to Kaifeng, seven hexes from the afflicted hex. I try to get them to LRCAP there. No dice... 7 is to far for a CAP.

crap...

Then I set them to CAP a hex at 6 hexes adjacent to this hex. Sure enough, next turn, the Alfs arrive and they "bleed" into the neighboring hex. I gave them a beating and they haven't come back since.

Japanese carriers have moved south, and are west of Milne. Debating whether I want to hit them or not, as I'm at least 4 days away from there.

Forgot to mention, back on Sep 1...

Going 8 kts thereafter, needing another 6 days to reach port. She'll be laid up for 444 days. She'll be withdrawn in about 150 days, so this is a waste. I made sure the upgrade is turned off, so I can get her out without a fuss.

About 4 hexes from Milne, a giant force of Japanese carriers and transports are enroute to there. My CM just laid a bunch of mines there, so we'll see...

Off the west coast of Japan, Surcouf finally uses her guns in anger, smacking a couple of light transports. The first got an "obliterated" message. :)

Meant to add...

Looked up the SBD-4 in tracker. Getting 40 a month next month. Pretty much a clone of the -3, except that the maintenance factor is 3 instead of 1, which bites.

In real life, the only difference was a new electrical system and prop.

One of the fighter squadrons at Moresby converted to P-38Fs a few days ago, so that'll be some reach. I may give a Rabaul sweep a try. I can't wait until the Jugs come in wholesale.

At Pearl last turn, I managed to drain the replenishment squadron of SBDs on the CVE to my fleet carriers, so numbers there are up some.

I'm getting to transfer Valiant to the States. Having her in drydock at Pearl slows down my ship cycling through the repair screen.

My troops in Burma are all moving to the hex SE of Pegu. I'm starting a big offensive south down the coast. Most are there already and the rest should be there within 2 days or so. I probably have 4x the troop count that Moulmein has.

Assault ships are about ready to depart Wotje. One or two motorized supports on each unit... always the slowest to load. These troops are prepping for Ponape. Some others at Pearl are already at 100%. I have more troops prepped for Kusaie also. I plan to take them both together when the time comes. I can probably count on Truk trying to interfere with Ponape, so I'll need my carriers along. All my US carriers are due for an upgrade in October. All of them are swapping their 1.1" guns for 40mm ones. It looks to be a 21 day deal, so I'll kick off my invasion once the carriers are ready. I should be fully stocked with SBDs by then also, in case IJN carriers show up.

I have a bunch of heavy bomber squadrons at Eniwetok, and I'm waiting to kick them off. I want to smack the port at Truk with them and hopefully catch a bunch of high value ships there. One of those squadrons recently flipped to B-17Fs, so that's what I'm waiting for. I want to do this well before the Ponape invasion.

I plan to forward stock troops at Ponape and Kusaie, as they can hold 30,000 troops each. Marianas will be next from there, but unless a bunch of his carriers die in the near future, I'll be waiting for some Essexes to show up first.

I think the B-17F has a shorter range than the -E model. That might affect your raid on Truk.

Any idea why your combat reports shows an asterisk on O19? I haven't seen that before.

Per LST's notes, that sub is able to carry mines. Ships with a '~' after the name are withdrawn at some point.

I was hoping to find some big ships there, but I did wallop a bunch of subs. KB will have to think hard about parking there from here on out.

Reconning Moulmein, he's noticed my troops on the move and has pulled out. It appears he has less than 1,000 troops in the area. With this knowledge, I'm kicking off my offensive down the Malay peninsula. Bunches more troops in India, guarding the southern coast are moving to gather at Calcutta, where I can also ship them over. 10th USAAF is also going to be enroute and I'll be beefing my air count up, once I take Moulmein and other bases.

Steve seems to be in full "circle the wagons" mode here. There's been no movement in the DEI past the Celebes and Java, so that's opening up the possibility of a big thrust up that ways. The only hitch is that I don't have the shipping to do everything I want at once. Retaking and building up the Celebes could really mess with his fuel shipments, in addition to basing subs there.

I'm treading lightly, as I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop, but I seem to have lots of choices of where to go here. Retaking Singapore could make the RN relevant again.

I have well over 100 xAKs at San Francisco, which is way more than enough to keep Pearl supplied. Fuel and supplies are pushing three quarters of a million now, with more enroute. I'll be transferring a bunch to Pearl to help with keeping bases supplied. I'll definitely need them when I take the Marianas.

Tojos have been sweeping Liuchow, shooting down P-40s and P-43s. I meant to stand them down but forgot.

A raid on Truk in 1942! Congrats on getting position to do that, and on the haul of subs. By far the fastest way to dispose of those pests in the game. .
SJ will be kicking himself for not having any fighters there! Now he will have to spread them thinner elsewhere.

Thanks, guys. I did a follow up raid about a week or so ago, with indifferent results. One sub hit. He's since moved fighters (Tojos) there. One less squadron on the front, I suppose.

11 October 1942

The dash-4 Dauntless is in production at 80 a month. Over 20 in the pool now. My carriers are all undergoing refit and are tied up for the next 19 days, but once they're out, I can probably upgrade a couple squadrons and use what goes in the pool to refresh the rest. A big convoy of troop transports from Cape Town in enroute to Pearl, having left Panama and should arrive within the next two weeks. More offensive options when they arrive. More on that later.

Things have gotten very messy in the Rangoon/Moulmein area. My troops made it to Thanbyuzayat where he had a ton of troops. It came down to one division and lots of flak, but that one division had badly beaten off my attacks there, despite a 5-1 advantage on my part. Since then, he's brought up cruisers which have beaten up my transports there and has also landed troops in Moulmein, in my backfield. My troops have turned around to go back to Moulmein. Everything's a mess right now. Blenheims have been ineffective against his ships. I've just moved in some B-25 squadrons to Pegu to help. I've also converted some squadrons to Vengeances. While I was at it, most of the RAF fighter squadrons went to the cannon armed IIc version of the Hurricane. I've brought down my cruisers to help on my end, and they did "okay", but took their own losses. I did lose CA Hawkins

With him focused so much in the Burma and Milne Bay areas, I'm highly tempted to kick off a Marianas invasion once my carriers get their upgrades. I'd take Guam, Tinian and Saipan all in one swoop. Doing so would complicate his supply situation from Truk on south -- especially if I get stuff like B-25s up and running. I'd need to be sure to get tons of supply and support forces all brought in with the initial invasion. I figure my carriers will be tied up awhile escorting follow-on supply convoys. I am down one carrier, as I've withdrawn my last Royal Navy CV, but I do have all the USN ones. He has also lost at least two fleet carriers, which I have credit for, including Kaga. I highly suspect either Hiryu or Soryu is dead, as I did leave one of them badly damaged with heavy fires. One of the 'Kakus may still be out of action from damage.

Dropped off the page, I see.

Things went south in a hurry near Burma. My massive infantry stack trekked south past Moulmein and met higher resistance than recon indicated. I started pulling back and his troops also moved. The end result is that my troops are trapped in Moulmein with no way out.

On top of this, he now has a strong carrier presence and is intercepting my supply convoys to Rangoon. I'd say it's least a 1/2 KB presence. Four battleships, including Yamato are also present.

The rest of the world is going along quietly.

This has pretty much convinced me to launch my Marianas campaign as soon as practicable. I'm waiting for a bunch of ships to assemble yet at Pearl. In the initial push, I want to be able to place lots and lots of planes on Guam, Saipan and Tinian, lots of support troops and at least 100,000 in supply. I'm hoping I have enough people transports for the job. I should be able to assign 4 battleships to each invasion group. All 5 USN carriers are now restocked in dive bombers, so I'm good there. If his fleet is committed to Burma, this is as good a time as any to kick this off. My carriers will probably be busy after this escorting further convoys in and out of the area. I want to get the troops prepped a bit more also.
