Have you managed to get the Hexthingy 1.2 working on the latest Google Earth Pro

I missed this when you posted it, but Hexthingy stopped working with later versions of Google long ago. I use the version pictured below. If you can't find it, I can probably get it to you. Note that when I opened it to get this screen shot, I got a message that this version of Google Earth will stop working soon Typical.

Thanks, I'd appreciate having a chance to try this out! Where can I find it, do you know?

I just googled 'google earth 6.2.2.6613' and several dl sites are found. I don't know which if any to recommend.

I searched around and don't seem to have the setup file saved as I do for several other older programs. Maybe I hid it somewhere safe, which means I will never find it now!

I loaded a map and put in the exact numbers you did and had no problem producing a grid.

Try it without even loading a map. Put in the numbers that you put in and it will make a little hex map in the upper left corner. But don't fill in the startingX startingY. Let it do that by itself.

Very Observant Klink ! Us old fellows will recognize them from Panzer Blitz/Leader, the kiddies will know them from Campaign Series Middle East [which Crossroads and Berto work on, and a Vietnam series is coming, to be followed by East Front/West Front].

The problem is solved. To do this, I had to find information on the gamesquad forum :

" Boonierat said:
Just dug up this old proggy I haven't used in ages to draw a map for TOAW but the map scaler keeps bugging me with a floating point value error, anyone here familiar with Curt's program? or has any idea what I am doing wrong? using v3.1.:smoke:
With ODD, Boonie, the problem come from the fact that we use in windows the 'virgule' as decimal separator. To bypass problem either use the US regional setting or replace the virgule by a point as decimal separator for the french regional setting.
It works fine for me with those changes done
Hope it helps "

If you make these changes, the program works. It would be nice to specify somewhere ,as repeatedly seen reports about this problem on the forum

But back to the topic. I downloaded 6.2.2.6613 and ran Hex Thingy on a lat-long I wanted a hex grid (at 250m hexes). It did not work out. Here's a snippet. The whole globe is filled with a grid, instead of the 30x30 km grid I wanted.

Any idea what I am doing wrong?

Well that sucks, I just tried it and it worked fine, as seen below. I have no idea why you are getting such a mess.

My problem is always with the Lat/Long's, they are never were they should be. When I used your pictured LatLong's, I ended up somewhere in Iran. So I put in the Lat/Long's for Lodeinoje Pole, Russia, and what I got is this nice grid, but no idea where it is. Usually when I make a map I have to trial and error the Lat/Lomg's about ten+ times before I get it where I want it.

I sem to have entered the latitude and longitude the wrong way around. I will try again.

Could you post a screenshot with Hex Thingy visible as well though, of whatever location. I’d like to try and replicate that first, to see if it’d work out.

Heureka! I changed my Windows Control Panel | Region and Language | Formats | Additional settings... Change date, time or number formats to English (United States), and it works a charm. Should have thought of this immediately I guess. Seeing was believing though, all good now

Here's city of Viborg and its vicinity. Just move the grid North a tad, and I am good to map

This is the version I use works ok. Sure could use hex numbers.
I used to print out a source map hand draw 10 kilometer grid on it (or whatever scale worked)
Then go into the map editor create the map and use rail lines to recreate the hand drawn map grid. Seemed to work ok.

Are you saying you got HexThingy working with a current vesion of Google Earth? That would be neat. Any particular issues installing / configuring / running it?

Cheers, I need to try it again with a current GE. Maybe it was my non-English language and font settings that got it confused.

"...That [ being able to put a map overlay on top of your TOAW map while you're making your map for the scenario you're writing ] would quite probably require an entire rewrite of the graphics end of the game top to bottom."

It needs it. The way it is now screams "ancient DOS program adapted to windows" instead of a state of the art, handy tool that's easy to use. It could be re-written in a more modern computer language to make it easier to work on ( C#, C++, ruby on rails, python, java, etc. ). It would justify another release for some $$$$.

I am currently using Hex-thingy to create a map for a scenario. Whilst it is a brilliant
little tool I am spending a massive amount of time typing in coordinates to google earth
to keep track of where about on the map I am. Does anyone out there know if there is a
version that writes hex coordinates for the grid. If not does anyone have the know-how to
write an update to the program (c#) that will do the coordinates?

Can anyone direct me to the procedure for using overlaying maps in conjunction with the East Front Map editor. I have seen it on a website using PaintShop Pro but cannot remember the name of the site.
