Just reading an old book written by a WWII SeaBee.

To build the airfields on Tinian in about 54 days;

15,000 Seabees were involved.
570 dump trucks
200 cargo trucks
160 tractors and bulldozers
60 groad graders
80 power shovels
48 rollers
90 high power drills
5 well drills
40 water wagons
70 portable welders rigs
Each day they used 12 tons of dynamite and 5,000 blasting caps

In the picture, the Seabee's built the closest (North) airfield, but not the distant (West) airfield - that was already built by the Japanese.

How did a Jap soldier hide out there without being seen? I think it was on Tinian.

I would guess there was actual terrain there before the Seabees started using their 16 tons of dynamite a day ...

He didn't surrender until the '70s. It may have been Guam or Saipan.
