I just bought this monster. I've never played this game before, neither the board game nor the computer version so I'm eagerly looking forward to jumping in.

Welcome to the game and forum. It's going to be a long way, but worthy. Take your time with the manuals and tutorials, and enjoy your first Barbarossa!

The video tutorials are your best friend. Extremely well done and extremely helpful.

I suggest that you make sure that you upgrade to the most recent version as that is probably not on the CD set you received.

I also suggest that you first play Barbarossa (for land warfare) and Guadalcanal (for naval warfare) before trying Global War and use the Fast Start setups (under Saved Games for Barbarossa, Guadalcanal and Global War) where you can to get a feel on how the game will typically be set up for both of those scenarios. Use the Novice Set for Optional Rules or go without any Optional Rules for the first games.

As already suggested, go through ALL of the Tutorials as that will give you a better idea on how the game is played. You don't need to go through the books, right away, but when you want to find out about something that you don't understand, use the index to find the section that describes it. Later you will use them more, but initially you are often better off to just try things.

Remember, that you are playing against yourself until you start with another player. It is more of a challenge than is obvious since often, especially in larger scenarios, you forget to execute something you were planning for and that adds some "fog of war". Not to mention the impacts of weather changes, initiative results and turns that end earlier or go longer than expected.

Have fun.

Dave

All good advice.

Every form has a Help button. Clicking on one of them brings up the corresponding text from the Player Manual (without the pictures). That's a fast way to find out about stuff without having to look at a PDF or the hard copy book.

Thanks everyone. I use to play Avalon Hill's games in high school but got away from war gaming. Earlier this year I bought Gar Grigsby's War in the West and enjoyed it. I've been following this forum for about 6 months and after the post about future development, I decided to take the plunge. As strange as it may sound, I love reading manuals! So I'll watch the tutorials and read the manuals, then try Barbarosa.

Thanks for the welcome,

Randy
