Comrades,

last, but not least, Tutorial '45! A rather small tutorial to demonstrate how to use artillery to blast your way through entrenched/fortified enemies (or at least to help the grunts with its support!) and how to delegate formation(s) to the PO. The follow up slides will be posted tomorrow...

OK, the plan. Have a look at the situation and proceed (I will attach the scenario file(s) later on, after the 'lesson').

OK, some more specific instructions in order for everybody to follow how to assign a formation to the PO and how to let it execute its moves.

So far Marshall Elmerovski's independent command executed its moves in a logical manner...

A good example (unfortunately!) what a 'Failed Proficiency Check' means... The plan to bombard the enemy's position for four consecutive rounds... didn't materialise! After two rounds, that's just it.

Al look at the other side and some extracts from the toawlog...
Oberst Klink will execute his turn and is going to explain some other interesting aspects - counter-battery fire...

OK, there are strong indications we're more or less are against a substantial
Soviet attack force; According to the reports by I/VG.Rgt.1061, its position was
shelled by at last a reinforced mixed artillery regiment.

Know we know WHY it is important to KNOW the equipment at your disposal. Unfortunately, comrade Polkovnik Evgeni Ivanovich Kirov (in charge of coordinating the artillery) didn't... and was escorted back to the rear by the NKVD troops of comrade commissar Anatoli Kuragin... What went wrong? Well, some of the artillery equipment had a shorter range than the other artillery component of the unit. And, if there are not within range... they don't fire, simple... The replacement of Evgeni Ivanovich certainly won't make the same mistake again...

OK! Welcome the new artillery officer - Leytenant Polkovnik Maxim 'Vitalevich' Polkov!
He seems to understand how to move up artillery units towards the front, set them on
tactical reserve (they had to move quite some distances...), save potential combat round
'burns' and of course, maximize the firepower of all other units, incl. proper range
settings!

We predicted our losses would be heavy, but... The attack somehow lacked of
momentum and for whatever reason... see for yourselves.

Extracts:
Combat : Weighted direct combat losses: 7%
Combat : Check morale: Soviet Union 5th Gds.Tank.Spt, 3rd Ind.Ski.Btl, ouch=66,ouch threshold=50.
Assault Ratio:No attackers, modifier = 100.
Combat : Morale check failed (demoralized).

OK, yet another try. We could tell our troops to attack in wave after wave(s), ignoring their losses, but neither our supply situation allows it, nor do we have men to replace the potential casualties!

It worked, comrades! But, the defenders fought tenaciously, especially their squads equipped with automatic weapons and Panzerfausts!

Combat : Axis weapons firing on Soviet Union BA-64 Armored Car.

OK, we got them on the run, for the moment at least. The tanks were committed on the
attack against the already de-entrenched and possible demoralised defender. It worked.
Now we have to wait how the other side might react.

Could be better, but also could be worse. Losses have been not too serious... so far.
Time to cover our retreat across the river and delay the Soviets as good as we can.

The situation at the end of T4. We cut some of their units off - good. If they can't
dislodge or advanced tank unit, then they'll be doomed.

The last slide... I am afraid. The counter-attack failed and see for yourself how
the situation looks like after the Soviets smashed into my units (or what was left
of them).

The .SCE and .EQP file will be attached shortly in order for all of you to toy around with the scenario.

You know the drill: Tutorial '45 Folder into GraphicsOverride, the other files into the scenario folder; in this case Tutorials.

Now it's up to you to play around and provide me with some feedback, OK?

So, what's next? I'd like to continue with yet another few chapters of the Tutorial 'XX series, covering interesting colonial struggles, from the 50's to the 70's perhaps, which of course will cover topics like guerilla warfare, counter-insurgency, event-based 'Easter Eggs', the use of modern equipment (for all those of you who love Choppas!), riverine-units, stuff like that. I am thinking in basing the whole storyline and various scenarios on this novel and the hypothetical 'Republic of Zangaro'. If there's somebody out there who is capable and willing to create a map of that state, much appreciated; because I s*ck in map-making.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dogs_of_War_(novel)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equatorial_Guinea#/media/File:Equatorial_Guinea_Map.png

Please drop your suggestions (incl. the map making volunteer(s) here in the thread, ja?

Thanks!

Much obliged, Hawkeye! I hope I can explain in the prelude to Tutorial '50 how one can build infantry and support teams with the ultimate making sense formula...

Remember, Light Rfl Sqd has a an AP=19 and a DF=10? As we deduced I think 5+ years ago, that means each man (DF) carrying a standard bolt-action rifle represents an AP=1.9 :) A Japanese Light Rfl Sqd usually had a strength of 15, that translates it into an AP=29 (28.5 really) and a DF=15... but more to come, when some soul has mercy with me and creates me a map ;)

Herr Oberst,

I used your formula for Rifle Squads extensively in designs for TOAW III.

But with Bob's new in-game Equipment Editor in makes the job much easier. No guessing about the GE Rfl Sqd w/le.MG34 w/PzF60.

This takes your tutorials into the Designer territory. But this may be the time for your tutorials to introduce this.

The only question becomes what AP AT Def etc. values to use. Perhaps that can become a topic to discuss on this now very active Forum.
With permission of the FITE2 team, I used their .eqp values as a starting point for my 15 scenarios in IV. Of course, FITE2 is East Front but also had Lend-Lease .eqp.

If I ever get the chance (time) to start the Kharkov '43@2.5km I will most likely use the FitE2 .eqp; makes it more or less consistent for all the 'struggles' in the east. Atm I am fiddling with this for the Tutorial '50s series...

1 x SMG (MAS-38) (AP=4)
1 x LMG (FM 24/29) (AP=6)(similar to a BAR, handled by one soldier)
8 x Rfl (MAS-36) (AP=8 x 1.9) ~ 15.2

So, a FFL Sqd with 10 men should have roughly an AP=25 (which is again the standard of Rfl(19) + LMG(6)=25 as the standard value we used for it hehehe.
