Chains of War Campaign

Mission 2: God of War Ongoing AAR

I've always tended to play more board games than computer games, and I loved doing AARs for those. Time and circumstance moved me to computer games in the last couple of years, and I've fallen hard for Command. I've played a little bit and now I'm in the mood for a campaign. I always want to use the newest fanciest gear in any game I ever play, so I'm starting with Chains of War. Blue Dawn was fun and pretty easy to win, and I figure that this will also be pretty easy to win, but I think a lot of fun.

The situation

In this scenario I'm playing as the Chinese overall commander. I'll paraphrase the briefings, rather than post them word for word. In a nutshell, after the South Koreans launched a massive preemptive strike against North Korea, things on the world stage heated up. In the US, political will for further aid to the South Koreans has waned. With the US thus less willing to be an active player in the region, China looks to expand its influence. From the scenario description:

“When Chinese defense and energy security experts looked at a map, they saw two lines of nations and islands that must be brought under Chinese control. The line runs from Vietnam to Japan and includes the Spratly Islands, Taiwan, the Philippines and the Ryukyu Island chain. The second line runs from northern Japan far south through the Mariana island chains to the eastern Indonesian Islands. Currently China’s rivals and adversaries controlled most of these two lines, which in effect contained China behind a wall of sea and air power.”

They would start with Vietnam.

The scenario

China has decided, much as South Korea decided, to launch a preemptive strike designed to severely damage the Vietnamese air force and navy. From the scenario briefing:

“Critical Targets are:
Su-30 Regiments at Kep, Bai Thuong and Bien Hoa air bases.
Su-27 Regiment at Phan Rang Air Base.
Su-22M4 Regiment at Da Nang Airport
2 Gepard frigates, 4 Tarantul corvettes and 5 Kilo submarines based at Cam Ranh Bay.”

The Politburo has decided to commit a massive air and naval force, as well as a single battalion of SSMs, to this task. All targets are expected to be eliminated within 3 hours.

The Vietnamese are not to be taken lightly, however. From the scenario description:

“The air threat is a mix of ultra-modern and obsolete Russian client state surface-to-air missile and fighter aircraft weapon systems. Most are situated around the Hanoi area in the North and Ho Chi Minh City in the south. The greatest threats are modern Flanker fighters and several modern SAM systems including SA-20a/S-300, SA-17 Buk and the Israeli Spyder. Vietnam still maintains numerous SA-2 Guideline and SA-3 Goa SAM sites, older MiG-21 interceptors and low-end SHORAD and AAA systems. They are all at a peacetime posture but can be expected to ramp up operations quickly, bringing more assets into the battle.”

So Chinese forces want to launch a massive initial strike to attritethe enemy before he can mobilize more powerful forces.

Our Assets

This map highlights Chinese air assets. We also have, as I said, a single battalion of SSMs as well as a reasonably sized naval force. Two Chinese subs aren't shown here, they are on station off of Cam Rhan Bay naval base, to surprise (we hope) any Vietnamese naval vessels that try to sortie. There are also plenty of Chinese naval vessels, we should easily be able to neutralize the enemy navy.

Our air assets are numerous, varied and powerful. We have a great many fighters armed with modern Beyond Visual Range missiles. There are a couple of regiments of old, heat seeker armed J-7's. I'll use those as a backstop in case the Vietnamese air force tries to launch a counter strike into China, I don't think they'll serve much use on the offensive. We also have a large number of Anti Radiation Missiles on a lot of aircraft. This is good, because I am kind of obsessed with destroying enemy radar and SAM sites before launching serious strikes. We also have a powerful regiment of H-6K Badger aircraft, known as the God of War. They are armed with lots of standoff ASMs. We also have a smattering of Laser Guided Bomb armed aircraft, which need to get close in to do their work. There are a number of tanker, recon and AEW assets, as well as naval strike aircraft. Most exciting of all, though are a force of J-20 stealth fighters. These ultra modern aircraft will be the tip of my spear in this encounter.

The enemy

Assigned targets are spread out across the length of Vietnam, but the major SAM threat seems to exist in the North. However, I am pretty certain that there are many SAM sites not yet detected, and those include the modern SAMs mentioned in the briefing, none of which have been detected at this time.

Mission 2: God of War Ongoing AAR

The plan

As this is a preemptive strike, I want to catch the enemy by surprise. In other large scenarios I've tried launching my assets and marshaling them at rally points before launching strikes. However, that alerts the enemy that something might be brewing, and loses the true element of surprise. So I'm going to kick things off by sending my stealth fighters on a strike against the Su-30's stationed at Kep, dead in the center of the massive enemy SAM network. Hopefully these aircraft will get in, deal some serious damage, and get out without losses. Also ideally, they will detect enemy air defenses I'm not currently able to see and plan for.

So my plan involves a 4 part initial strike, focused entirely on the northern part of the country. After I deal as much death and destruction as possible there, I'll assign units to strike farther south. I think 36 hours will be enough time for that.

Part 1 will be a quick stealth fighter strike against Kep. Once that strike is accomplished, if the enemy hasn't already been alerted they will be. So I hope to follow that up with a timely part 2. However, if during ingress we detect modern SAM sites that we haven't seen yet, we may decide to strike those instead. That will be up to the flight leader's discretion.

The plan (continued)

Part 2 will be a massive SEAD attack against a broad array of enemy radar and SAM sites, ,including radars in the central part of the country.

The Vietnamese have an extensive radar network that gives them coverage of nearly all of our air bases. I'd like to knock those radars out, and take down the longer range SAM SA-2 sites at least. My thinking about the radars is that if I can knock them out, then individual SAM sites will be on their own and unable to coordinate a response to future threats. I don't really know if that's true, but I hope it is.

If I can take out the SA-3's that's a bonus, but as I said I'm expecting to find out about more SAM sites that pose a greater threat than these. I should have plenty of ARM missiles (64) to accomplish this task, if I can get them on target.

Part 2 continued

These radar sites cover our bases on Hainan, so they'll be targeted as well.

Mission 2: God of War Ongoing AAR

The plan (continued)

Part 3

Next, once a number of enemy SAM sites have been taken down, will come the God of War strike. Initially I'll plan to strike at the northern and central bases housing the primary targets. That targeting may change depending on the outcome of parts 2 & 3.

Part 4

This is intended to happen in concert with part 3. I don't know how effectively fighters and SAMs can engage my long range ASMs, but I want to keep them busy enough that it won't matter. Hopefully my SEAD strike will have seriously crippled the enemy SAM network. While my ASMs are inbound, I'm going to launch a massive fighter sweep designed to draw out the enemy air force. Ideally I'll defeat them in detail, while leaving their bases a shambles that they can't sortie from quickly after returning to base.

I'm not sure if this is wise. Maybe I should let the long range missiles fly and hope to catch enemy aircraft on the ground, but I think that's unlikely. So I'll try that.

Mission 2: God of War Ongoing AAR

The plan (continued)

As these initial strikes progress, I expect to find some more enemy forces, particularly naval forces. I'll task my Navy to sail toward Cam Rahn bay and hopefully be able to defeat them in detail with a combination of surface, submarine and air forces.

My SSM battalion is in reserve, I'll target that as the situation develops.

Stealth Strike against Kep AFB

I'm not certain how to destroy the most Su-30s in an air strike. Here are targets listed as part of Kep AFB.

There could be aircraft on those tarmac spaces, and even on the runway. However, I think it's most likely that they'll be in hangars and revetments, and I don't have a limitless number of bombs on my J-20s, so I'll target those. I maybe should strike the runway, but I've heard on the forums here that runways get repaired pretty quickly, and I don't have runway specific munitions equipped, so I'll stick with hoping to take out as many aircraft on the ground as possible.

I'm also going to set up a number of tanker stations, AEW and Recon / ELINT patrols to develop a greater understanding of the battlefield. I won't detail those here, partly because I haven't yet decided where to send them.

The last bit of preliminary business has to do with arming a number of aircraft that are in reserve but not yet equipped for any specific mission. Prep times for most of these are quite long, minimum of 10 and as many as 20 hours, so I have to set them up now if they're to be useful at any point. My priorities are going to be as follows:

SEAD if possible, to hopefully deal with any remaining SAM threats and/or escort fighter bombers on strikes.

Standoff munitions when possible, to allow for inflicting damage without coming too close.

Any other type of strike packages possible, I don't believe I'll need further A/A assets as the battle develops.

OK, that's a long post about nothing having happened yet, isn't it? Well let's fire the scenario up and see what the God of War has to say about my best laid plans.

Thanks! I'm still posting written AAR's on the facebook command site, but here I'm just going to post links to the Lets Play videos I'm making for the series. It's more of a hassle to post and upload photos in the proper order here than it is on FB.
