Just found out about this site/company. I played Avalon Hill Games back in the day. Looking for a turn based IGOUGO game to play on my computer that is Easy/Introductory. Like the AH game Tactics 2.

There are a LOT of titles here. Can you all help me out with some suggestions?

I am not sure what Tactics II was like but maybe the Battle Academy 1 and 2 games could offer what you are looking for? i notice that Tactics 2 had square hexes which Battle Academy has also

It is Badgerman, as in, Wisconsin Badgers. ;-)

Thanks for the quick reply. Tactic II was an intro game to teach the basics. You might only have 30 cardboard pieces on the board to start. I want to teach my kids this stuff but need to start with something "entry level" if you know what I mean. And something you play against the computer.

Status: offline 		You are looking for a game called Small General. It can be played on phones, and other tablets as well as computers.

It's downright beginner friendly.

For games here, Battle Academy for tactical, Panzer Corps for Operational, and Strategic Command for grand strategy are all designs that won't overwhelm you. Unity of Command is also user-friendly.

Status: offline 		I'll 2nd anything that has minature pieces as those are the things that draw young wargamers in. Battle Academy is a good start. Simple, easy to play and very few rules to understand. Just basically point and click n go or shoot.

Panzer Corp will be fun for them also, but, I'd hardly suggest it for an experienced wargamer as it's just too easy and simple with very little challenge to me. Might be fun for an 8 to 12 year old though getting into wargaming.

One of my favorites and a more intermediate to advanced game would be Panzer Command: Osfront, minatures, tactical and wego though but very enjoyable since each turn is played in turns and the action is wego.

Off the beaten path of Matrixgames is a little company called Killerbee Software which has two very enjoyable entry level games; Empire Deluxe (point and click movement and battles) and The Perfect General (pretty much the same but you get to pick your forces each battle and during reinforcement phases.) Both very simple easy games to play for a beginner wargamer and at the highest difficulty even challenging for an experienced wargamer.

But Steel Panthers 3 Brigade Combat is ideal too. Visually and playwise, about equal.

I'm debating getting Tigers on the Hunt. It's amazing I don't already own it. Unsure it is beginner friendly, it's kinda like its board game equal, but the Advanced Squad Leader version.

Status: offline 		The Campaign Series has a lot going for it: hundreds of scenarios, linked and dynamic campaigns, all three main theatres of operation (West Front, East Font and PTO), detailed descriptions for every unit, dozens of terrain types and, least but not last, it is easy to learn, and a blast both in SP and MP.

I bought my first title, the original West Front, back in the late '90s - and since then this series of games never abandoned my HDs. I personally consider it a better game than the various iterations of Steel Panthers.

Are they discontinued?

Yeah, there are heck of a lot war games available. Many good ones are available for free. Battle for Wesnoth is a community created game at its finest, and is a better game than many commercial ones.

Another free game, historical one, is Field of Strategy. Player plot movements, but units choose autonomously who they attack.

Seconded the nomination of Small General as a first step into the digital gaming world. Incredibly intuitive UI and a fun game with some challenging scenarios.

Before someone else jumps in and yells at me - it is NOT the be-all and end-all of digital wargaming. It's a great first step into digital wargaming.

Status: offline 		Germany at War: Barbarossa 1941 was mentioned above. I highly recommend this, it is one of my favorite Matrix games. A great thing is that it is still actively supported with updates etc. The developer Ronald Wendt has done a great job with this game and has made changes based upon player feedback.

It should be cheap as chips by now and... well, you like Panzer Leader etc. Be aware... that, for some reason, even nowadays some new Linked Campaigns for JTCS pop up... recently, some good stuff from my fellow fatherlanders! - See the Hauptkampflinie blog.

Wesnoth is completely awesome - I didn't mention it above b/c I was thinking of groggier games.

The base included campaign is excellent, but the Rise of Wesnoth is even better. The Tale of Two Brothers is a nice, short campaign, and The Northern Rebirth was a lot of fun.

There's a ton of great campaigning you can do in Wesnoth, if you into a fantasy wargame/RPG hybrid like that.

Like you, Tactics two was the first A.H. game I ever played and it was the start of everything. There are lot's of excellent games here and I have a few of them (must remember to register them now that I've joined the forums)

I can't say much about easy/introductory, after all that is defined by both your skill as a player and your desire to learn a game. I do however suggest you check out the various tittles that are WEGO. It is a far more satisfying system than the traditional IGOUGO. Basically, you issue orders to your units and so does the AI, when you press end turn those orders are executed at the same time. This leads to a lot of interesting situations as the enemy is very often not where you expect, it is also far more realistic though it can be tense. Check out Civil War 2 or Birth of America if you can. They both have a learning curve but include enough smaller scenarios that will allow you to gradually increase your proficiency with the games.
