IIRC you can only repair maximum of three rail hexes a turn in the winter. Might be worth concentrating all of them on one route, get that done then move them all to another one. At 3 a round on 1 track you soon get where you are going. Spread them thin you risk getting nothing everywhere.

You're absolutely right of course. I'll do it. Thanks for the heads up.

You can also move your Finnish engineers right back so that they are not using up any of the repair allotment. Unless you have big plans for the Arctic front of course.

I disbanded the Finn's RR engineers so that I wouldn't be tempted to try to repair
some rail somewhere instead of near Leningrad where I really needed it.

Thank you ever so much for your comment...it gave an idea to stack 9 of the RR engineers in one hex
to see if it won't repair 10 hexes at a time or something. So there's a team of nine of them working
on the rail leading south into the low-supply area and a team of four of them heading NE to feed
another part of the front lines that's having supply trouble. I guess that's the best I can do at
the moment. I'm on turn 57 and the Soviet Winter Offensive is almost over and the Soviet shock
will return to "normal" instead of boosted to 120. When that happens the fire at will signal will
be broadcast to the units in the field and the war will be back in operation. I'm expecting the
supply levels to continue to rise slowly and that I will be able to tke the fight almost all the way
to Moscow. I expect to fall a bit short this year.

Hey Steve: All of the FJ Division was withdrawn except for one element therefrom. Is this an oversight? Is this
element supposed to be withdrawn too? I guess I should just park it at Leningrad and let it garrison the red light
district.

It is not an oversight. That is what happened historically.

This is the T59 front lines before I have moved
anybody. The SWO is over and the shock levels
are slanted toward the Axis side and the killing
can comense.

Here's some of the losses so far. I've been following a policy of no-events since
the middle of November of last year and it shows in the troop levels. One unsettling
detail I've noticed is that there's enough HRS squads on hand to match what is being
produced each turn so I'm just keeping up with losses of the HRS squads. Which
argues for following the same policy but I need to try to surround Moscow sometime
this winter and it's already January and winter ends in March sometime.

Good luck with the offensive. Are you going to push directly at Moscow or try to encicrle Soviet front line units?

Hey there Mike my friend. Um...I'd really like to surround Moscow before I take it down because I
like to destroy the units as well as take the objective. I'm mainly after the units but this obj
is an important one and is a must have to survive for a long time in this war. Thanks for the
good luck. I think I'm going to need it.

Larry,

I was looking at the T59 post and there is a bit of a bulge in the Soviet line NW of Moscow and I was wondering if you could encircle a bunch of the Soviet forces there, before heading to Moscow. May not be worth it though...

Hey Mike....are you talking about something like this? Two pincers meeding at a pre-determined point to surround and kill a lot of Soviet units. I've been trying to do something like that for about 3 turns now and I can't seem to make a hole to move throgh. He's got stacks of units on the front lines and some of those stacks are pretty stout and it takes a lot to make them move.

I could probably do something like that down south where the Soviets are sparse and not so strong. I'll try it and let you know how it goes.

Larry,

Yes, that was my thought. Although an attack right up the centre of of that area might start the ball rolling.

This is that bulge in the front lines and as you can see I'm busy attacking the Soviet
units in the lines in this area trying to make a dent somewhere, a place where I can
attack from three adjacent hexes, make a crack so I can widen it to a hole. But these
Soviet units are pretty stout and my attacks usually kill a lot of Soviet units but they
don't move, their hex doesn't go empty. I can't seem to make a hole. Not even with the
Panzers.

That whole sector is a nightmare. I think it does not help that it is heavily forested and tanks are not so effective in a forest. Plus the Soviet has defence in depth there from early on. I don't think a major offensive in that area is a good strategy. Personally I settled for taking the key towns that are road/rail junctions - a couple of which generate a reinforcement division once captured - and then dug in for the duration.

Hey there Martin dude. Thanks for posting your info. It's important and welcome and I'm glad to hear about the reinforcement hexes to be had because I'm not quite there yet and I'm looking forward to grabbing those hexes. I need to check out the expected reinforcements to see where everything spawns so I can try for those specific hexes for the reinforcement because I can use all the units I can get.

I had not realised about the reinforcements until they started popping up when I secured the towns. They came in really useful!

There is just so much information that the player needs to know to plan properly. I have never tried one of these big campaigns, they are intriguing. Trying to figure out rail, supply, reinforcement arrival points, weather and moving air resources and then actually fighting the battles. Really cool.

I started to do a cut and paste of where the expected reinforcements arrive and
decided it wasn't worth it. Most of those places are spots I'm not going to be
in for a long time yet. Kaluga and Rostov are possibilities but the rest of them
are far off yet.

I really love it Mike dude. There's a myrid of things to consider and lots of them are contingent and liable to the whims of chance. I used to play WITP-AE mostly against Brian ( General Patton ) as he taught me amphibious landings and a proper CAP and escorts to suppress enemy fire and so on and I learned a lot. Now Brian and I are playing a game that's a LOT less detail oriented but still has so much detail you have to take notes to keep up with everything you need to do. TOAW IV is the latest iteration of one of the finest wargames being played today. It has enough details to keep you busy and saturate your immersion meter it's got the game tools to keep up with what you need to know to make correct decisions. Every once in a while I'll run into something that needs to be adjusted but it's pretty much fine the way it is. On the unit display for aircraft units I could also use the information about how many of them I have on hand and how many I'm producing and how many are assigned and especially which formations are flying that equipment. Stuff like that. Right now you have to go to different dialogs for that information and you need to know it to know whether or not to fly that unit, etc.

But yeah, you're responsible for everything except the weather. To tell you the truth the weather doesn't influence my decisions very much. Maybe they should....maybe I'm missing another game tool afforded to players who know how to use it. I'm not sure I do.

Also, something I've noticed last turn is the state of affairs with the aircraft units. Some of them are down to 19 of 42 planes assigned. I've got him parked at Berlin overgoing an overhaul, a what you call a 1000-hour inspection, and the unit is down until it fills back up with planes and I'm not making but about 7 He-111's per turn and I need a lot more than that to fill up the squadrons again, so I've grounded the type for now to give the sparse units time to fatten up a bit. I'm getting low on Ju-88's too so I may have to ground them too. I hate fighting war without CS. That's like starting your morning without orange juice.

I have zoomed up to scope out the places where I might be able to organize something offensively, in a big way and there's a couple of places mainly in the south where the Soviets are sparse but nothing in the north besides that big bulge and I've been working on the bulge for several turns now. I kill Soviet units but more take their place and I'm not making much progress in moving the front lines.

I think what I'll do is get a hole started in the Soviet lines somewhere south where it's easier and roll up the Soviet front lines all the way to Moscow and see if I can't get something started here.

I think I may have found a weak spot in my front lines. There's only a light screen
there and I think it won't be enouogh when Elmer wakes up and discovers a hole in
his front lines and sends some people to fix it and I don't have anybody there. That
won't work for me. I need to fix it now before it's a problem. I'll see if I can't
get some of the Hungarians up here to stand in a front line for me. They won't stand
up and defend themselves very well, but on the other hand there's no Soviets here so
far.

Comment on the design of this scenario. For combat units I see divisions, regiments, battalions and sections. Wouldn’t be surprised if there are also company size units somewhere on the field.

In the old days sections and companies in this scenario would have been classified as “ant” units. For a scenario of this scale it isn’t realistic that sections and companies would appear on the operational map. Suggest a redesigned so that battalion is the smallest possible unit. It would involve tinkering with the unit counter size indicators, but it is possible.

Battalions are the smallest units in the scenario. Some units that have the smallest indicator is so that the unit cannot divide at all and this was the intent of the designers. For 1 example Elmer has a habit of dividing tank units into smaller units which is a detriment to him.

I just got through resolving the combat for round 6 and now it's round 7 and I've got
more attacks to do yet. This is what happens when you keep your units quiet for about
20 turns and then fire at will.

Here's the supply situation down south east of Z-town, west of Stalino. It's still
too low for operations and I've got the Bulgarians in the worst area and they are on
a no-events policy and so far it's working out. I don't expect the supply situation
to improve very much over the next dozen turns or so. It's going to take a while to
get the rail to reach this area.

There's about a dozen squadrons flying the He-111 that have about half their assigned
planes and I've got them parked near Berlin resting so that they can refit and fill
back up with planes. It's going to take until next spring to fill them all I believe.

I've got quite a few Me-109's and their proficiency is extraordinarily high and the air
shock difference is favorable to the Axis so I have the fighters on three-dots and I've
distributed them along the length of the front lines covering everything and the loss
meter always registers over 100+ losses for the Soviets and perhaps two dozen for the
Axis. The air war is heating up however because they have been making air strikes
including some of those on my airfields. I've got a lot of the AA units on the front
lines and I'm thinking I'll need to move them back to the airfields.
